'Ordinary People': Kelly Osbourne Not Fat
(The Sun) (12/08/03)

Edited By Michael Bennett

KELLY OSBOURNE LONDON, UK - THE OSBOURNES' brand new book, "Ordinary People," is now out in The UK.

Excerpts from and about KELLY OSBOURNE were published last week by The Sun:

Curvy KELLY OSBOURNE is happy with her own shape - and was furious when mum Sharon considered cosmetic surgery to make herself look slimmer.

19-year-old Kelly says: "I don't see myself as fat.

I'm 5ft 2in and weigh around 120 lbs. I'm normal. Girls come up to me and tell me I've made them feel better about themselves.

A while ago, one girl wrote to tell me that I helped give her the confidence to stop being bulimic.

Fuck the whole weight thing. If you feel good, leave it. Don't push the issue.

In high school I was the fat kid. I didn't care that I wasn't skinny.

I'm not going to starve myself or work out. I'm not going to take diet pills. I don't even count calories.

That's why I didn't talk to my mum for two weeks after I found out she was thinking of having cosmetic surgery to make her thinner.

It was one of the most disgusting things I'd ever heard."

Sharon says: "I decided not to have the surgery but I was still set on losing weight and changing the way I looked. There had to be a safer way."

"My doctor found out about gastric banding, an operation that involved placing a tiny band around the entrance to the stomach."

"You get full sooner. It was a new operation. Much less of an ordeal than the one I'd been considering."

"Without telling Ozzy, who would've gone crazy with worry, I had it done."

"The procedure was simple -- four little incisions -- and within a few hours I was fine."

"I went home the same day, broke the news to the family and then spent the next four days in bed."

"Then, before I knew it, I was bursting with amazing energy."

"I still ate all the shit food I loved, like McDonald's. The difference was I could only eat little bits of all the junk."

"In less than ten months I had lost almost 100lb. I felt like it was the best thing I'd ever done."

But since then, Sharon HAS had serious cosmetic surgery including a tummy tuck, face lift, leg lift and liposuction -- plus two boob jobs.

She says: "I had my legs lifted, my ass lifted, my face lifted -- everything lifted."

"Whatever was left I had liposuctioned."

"By the time I got out of the hospital, I was feeling the way I'd always dreamed."

For daughter Kelly, confronting other people's opinions about her weight was simple compared with proving to the world she could sing like her dad Ozzy -- then making her live debut in front of Hollywood's A-list elite.

She says: "It wasn't the easiest decision, following my dad into the music business and doing a cover of a Madonna classic, Papa Don't Preach, for my first song.

But I liked the way it came out. It sounded raw, energetic, and different enough from the original.

I didn't think the single would do anything. I went in, recorded it, no big deal.

Then a few days later everyone started saying, 'You have to sing at the MTV Movie Awards.'

There was no limit to my nervousness. I told my brother, 'Jack, I'm going to wee my pants.'

Yes, I knew the lyrics and had only the best people behind me.

But how can you prepare for making your performing debut in front of Hollywood's biggest stars and millions of people on live television?

Just before I went on I started freaking out over the huge set of stairs I had to walk down. I was convinced I'd trip and fall.

Finally, a producer began the countdown. Five, four, three, two and one.

A moment later, I was on the stage in front of millions of people. I hardly recall anything.

No, I remember two things. There was a teenage boy in the front laughing at me -- and I wanted to clobber his head with the microphone.

I also saw my sister Aimee waving her arms and cheering for me. That was really nice.

Everything else flew by, then it was all over.

Backstage, Eminem and the White Stripes were the first to offer congratulations, and I told everyone giving me hugs and high-fives that I loved them.

I was drained.

Someone asked how I felt. Truthfully, I felt like sobbing.

I wanted to sit and cry. Of course they would be tears of joy. I'd pulled off the improbable with flying colours.

I floated around backstage, partying with the celebrities and enjoying that I'd surpassed expectations.

Then I pooped out. Two security guys carried me to a limo where I leaned, half-asleep, against my mother.

At home my mum and dad tucked me into bed like they did when I was a little kid.

As I drifted off to sleep, it felt like I'd dreamed it all.

It's funny, fame. Literally overnight, millions of people want to know everything about you.

Various reporters want to know what you eat for breakfast, why you dropped out of school, do you do drugs, what makes you cry.

One thing my dad taught me -- it doesn't matter if they're laughing at you or with you, so long as they're laughing.

As long as you know you're a good person, it doesn't matter."
