JOURNEY Expanded Editions Of 5 LP's Arrive
07.31.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
With expanded editions of five of their albums arriving in stores tomorrow, JOURNEY continue their reign at the top of a short list of second generation San Francisco Rock bands whose music has stood the test of time well. With over 43 million records sold in the U.S. alone, Journey's rich archive of CD's and DVD's is one of the cornerstones of the Columbia Records and Columbia/Legacy catalog. For the first time in ten years, a major bloc of the Journey album catalog has been newly repackaged in the band's fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh consecutive studio LPs -- the landmark "Infinity" (1978), "Evolution" (1979), "Departure" (1980), and "Escape" (1981) (the latter two as expanded editions with multiple bonus tracks) -- along with an expanded edition of their all-time best-selling "Greatest Hits" (1988, 14x platinum, over 500 weeks on the chart, now with one bonus track). It was in 1996 when the classic Journey lineup of vocalist Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith reconvened for the first time in ten years to record "Trial By Fire." Their 10th studio album was also the long-awaited follow-up to 1986's "Raised On Radio." To celebrate the release of "Trial By Fire" in 1996, Columbia/Legacy issued newly digitally remastered CD's of "Captured" (1981, Journey's first double-LP and first live album), as well as the studio albums "Frontiers" (1983) and "Raised On Radio" (1986). In 2001, the 2-disc "Essential Journey" was released, clocking in with over 130 minutes of chart hits and signature album tracks (1978 to 1996). This was followed in 2003 by the "Journey: Greatest Hits" DVD (1978-1997), an 18-clip collection that spanned 1978's 'Wheel In the Sky' to 1997's 'When You Love a Woman' (from "Trial By Fire"). In 2005, "Live In Houston 1981 - Escape Tour" arrived on DVD, which features one of the first MTV concerts ever broadcast and has been certifield platinum by the RIAA.
[LISTEN] THE POLICE Captured By New Documentary
07.28.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
Universal Music Group has announced the November 2006 DVD premiere of "Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out," - a fascinating behind-the-scenes, never-before-seen documentary capturing THE POLICE from their inception in 1978, their peak in 1982, and their split in 1984. Directed by and culled from original Police drummer Stewart Copeland's Super 8 archive, the film was originally premiered earlier this year at Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival. In it, Stewart Copeland documents the band's inevitable rise from a struggling, unknown Rock trio to international superstars. This amazing film is a rare, candid, unadulterated and priceless account of Pop history in the making, of international chart domination and life on the road as the drummer and founding member of The Police. Copeland not only had the foresight to film everything he encountered with his Super 8mm camera, but twenty-seven years later, he ingeniously edited together all the archive footage and made it into a vivid first person account. His narration throughout the film guides the viewer from The Police's meteoric rise from virtual unknowns to one of the biggest rock bands on the planet. With the aid of the latest in computer software technology, Copeland enhanced the live recordings and edited the never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage into a 74-minute documentary. Memorable scenes include the first time the band encounters hysteria after a UK concert, the first meeting with A&M Records executives in New York City, their first press conference in Los Angeles, recording sessions in Holland and Montserrat, backstage and on stage at the European festivals promoting "Reggatta De Blanc" and "Zenyatta Mondatta," as well as joking around backstage, in hotels and in TV studios. The soundtrack is made of live clips as well as studio tracks. Featuring over sixty different Police songs in various versions, the film offers a humorous, perceptive and deeply personal compendium of all of the special moments on the road during an exciting time in...

WHITESTARR To Tour In Support Of New LP
07.27.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
Southern California's WHITESTARR will go on tour with Candlebox in September in support of the recently released "Luv Machine" album, which is now available via Contango Records. Combining the scissorkicking style of Southern Rock bands like The Black Crowes and Kings Of Leon, the musicanship and swagger of Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, massive hooks and a whole lotta fun, Whitestarr frontman Cisco Adler comments: "I just say we're everything rock 'n' roll." Whitestarr started out simply enough in 2000, when Adler put down some songs on a four-track recorder in his living room. "Whitestarr is made up of guys who play their instruments incredibly well and bring a musician's mind to the table," says Adler, who has also worked as a graphic artist and Hip-Hop producer. "It's great when you demo a song and bring it to the guys and you can hear how much more alive they make it. It's truly amazing and brings a band to a whole different level." Onstage, Whitestarr bring a circus-like vibe to their live performances, where they have included numerous back-up singers, a saxophone player and multiple guitarists. The members of Whitestarr have Rock 'N' Roll in their blood - literally. Cisco Adler is the son of legendary producer and musical pioneer Lou Adler, while drummer Alex "Orbi" Orbison is the son of the famed Roy Orbison. "The name thing is a double edged sword," says Adler. "It's hard enough to prove yourself as a band. But then when people have this preconceived idea about what you should be like, it's even harder. Really, it's all about just sitting back and listening to the music and seeing for yourself." Tour Dates:

[LISTEN] AXEL RUDI PELL's 'Mystica' Is Expected 8/28
07.26.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
Guitarist AXEL RUDI PELL will make a return August 28th with the the release of a new album entitled "Mystica" on SPV Recordings. Since his 1989 solo debut, "Wild Obession," and no later than his breakthrough in 1991 with "Nasty Reputation," Axel Rudi Pell has been a firm fixture in the German Melodic Hard Rock scene. In the musical microcosm, he has always had everything in its traditional place, yet on the other hand he moves continuously. If one had supposed that after the early 90's albums "Eternal Prisoner" and "Between The Walls" (at that time with singer Jeff Scott Soto) that Axel Rudi Pell would have nothing more to offer, then one quickly quickly assured with the knowledge that Pell has always stood for high level Hard Rock. "Black Moon Pyramid," "Magic" and "Oceans Of Time" covered the detailed possibilities of the genre without crossing the line, but at the same time remaining interesting and entertaining musically, which is the trademark of Axel Rudi Pell's German/American band. A spring into the new century was made energetically and easily on "The Masquerade Ball," "Shadowzone" and "Kings And Queens," while Pell showed his softer side on "The Ballads," "The Ballads II" and "The Ballads III." "Mystica" Track Listing:
1. The Mysterious Return (Intro)
2. Fly To The Moon
3. Rock The Nation
4. Valley Of Sin

[WATCH] BEDLIGHT FOR BLUE EYES On Their Return
07.25.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
BEDLIGHT FOR BLUE EYES have announced their return to the spotlight with an exclusive digital-only release of four previously unreleased songs. The EP, entitled "Waste My Time," will be available for purchase on iTunes come August 8th, and if you buy the first three songs the fourth is free. The title song 'Waste My Time' is a catchy brand new tune written and performed with new singer, Danny Rinaldi. The song emphasizes the extent of Rinaldi's vocal range, while showcasing the leads and Hard Rock mentality that has always been traditional Bedlight For Blue Eyes. Of the writing process for the new material, Rinaldi says: "It was very communal. We all had an idea of the direction that we wanted to go, which was much more rock 'n' roll. We are revamping our song writing style based on all of the classic rock we have been listening to." For the second track, the band redid 'Ephemeral Addictions' with Danny Rinaldi, which will be included on the EP. Speaking on the success of their new lineup, Bedlight For Blue Eyes guitarist Itchy says: "Everything is working out so well, and each show gets better and better. Danny really makes the songs his own." Also on the EP is the song 'Hindsight,' which was previously only available on the "Masters Of Horror" soundtrack, and the band's cover of 'Livin' On A Prayer,' which features guest vocals from Travis of Crash Romeo. Meanwhile, Bedlight For Blue Eyes are out on their first U.S. tour with the new lineup alongside Trustkill Records labelmates Roses Are Red. Rinaldi is ready to get on the road and show the world the new Bedlight, adding: "I can't wait to start living the touring life, and be as close as I can with the band. We are going to grow, and in turn, our music will grow." It's a return to the road with good friends Roses Are Red, as they were one of many bands that Bedlight For Blue Eyes toured with last year, including A Static Lullaby, Boys Night Out, Hawthorne Heights, Head Automatica, and Secret Lives Of The Freemasons.
[LISTEN] PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS Album Near
07.24.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS' fourth full-length album, "Mercy," will be released on September 22nd via Abacus Recordings in North America and by Alveran Records in the European territories. The new album showcases the band performing at their creative zenith from the music and production to the artwork and lyrics, as the Denver, Colorado quartet have now cut the fat and zeroed in on their strengths. Recorded by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis) in Seattle, the band now sounds like the bastard son of Kyuss, Mastodon and Neurosis. "Mercy" perfectly captures the band's dark, heavy rock delivery with the tension and themes that can only be described as "hard living." Further contributing to the album's murky feel is none other than Chris Taylor (Darkest Hour, Pig Destroyer) with stellar artwork and packaging. You can catch Planes Mistaken For Stars on their upcoming European tour (their first in five years) for a taste of some of their excellent new material before the "Mercy" hits the streets. [WATCH] PETE TOWNSHEND's Solo Catalog Expanded
07.21.06
(VNU Media)
The Who principal PETE TOWNSHEND's solo catalog -- a number of titles from which have been out of print for years -- will be reissued in expanded editions Aug. 29 via Hip-O/UME. The move is timed to coincide with the Sept. 12 kick-off of The Who's fall North American tour. The majority of the reissue titles feature new bonus tracks. 1980's "Empty Glass," which is best known for the Pop hit 'Let My Love Open the Door,' will feature alternate vocal versions of 'I Am An Animal,' 'Keep On Moving' and 'And I Moved,' plus an extended version of 'Gonna Get Ya.' Its 1982 follow-up, "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes," includes the previously unreleased 'Vivienne,' which appeared on the initial LP track list but was later pulled, plus the B-sides 'Man Watching' and 'Dance It Away.' Townshend's 1972 solo debut, "Who Came First," sports five bonus tracks included on a prior reissue plus three new items: 'Mary Jane,' 'I Always Say,' and 'Begin The Beguine.' 1985's "White City" boasts the previously unreleased songs 'Night School' and 'Save It For Later," plus a 12-inch vinyl extended mix of 'Hiding Out.' All three releases in Townshend's archival "Scoop" series are also part of the reissue campaign, loaded with demos for classic Who songs and fascinating departures from the artist's usual guitar-based compositions. "When I have come up against any kind of problem in the past I have always dealt with it through music; either through writing a song or literally recording the problem away therapeutically," Townshend writes in the liner notes for the first "Scoop," which was released in 1984. "For many years, recording was my one and only hobby." Townshend's 1977 collaboration with The Small Faces' Ronnie Lane will be available as a DualDisc with a new audio mix, plus the bonus tracks 'Only You,' 'Good Question' and 'Silly Little Man,' which are outtakes from those sessions. The 1990 concert souvenir "Deep End -- Live" has been expanded with 'Magic Bus' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again,' while Townshend's 1993 Rock Opera "Psychoderelict" will appear both as a CD (including the non-album track 'Psychomontage') and a live DVD.
FURY IN THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE Returning
07.20.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
German Rock veterans FURY IN THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE are about to release a new album in "Every Heart Is A Revolutionary Cell," which is due for issue in Europe next week on July 31st via SPV Recordings. There are various different ways of counteracting the routine that threatens a successful band that has been around for several years. However, "Every Heart Is A Revolutionary Cell" continues the consistently personal and extremely organic path the group from Hannover have been following for nearly two decades now. "This is a real in-house album with a conscious demo flair," Thorsten Wingenfelder, brother of vocalist Kai Wingenfelder and one of the band's founder members, explains. "There's no guiding hand on this album, and that's precisely what we want the listeners to hear." Yet the band have arrived at a significant point in their career. They're about to celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2007, and it goes without saying that this illustrious event will involve various festivities. But how to conclude the first two decades? A question that the six musicians answer in their typically relaxed style: with an album that hits the raw, almost brusque mean somewhere between departure and years of experience. "Some of the numbers are based on live tracks that have consciously been kept raw, with our own - you could almost say naive - capabilities as sound engineers and producers. But it worked. A few years ago we wouldn't have been able to come up with such an album." As always when they get down to the preparations for a new album, the six musicians "argued, fought, loved, talked and drank a lot," Because, says Wingenfelder: "Art consists of realizing when a song has been completed. Once you've missed the right moment, the way back isn't always easy. Luckily we still notice immediately when a track works." During that process, Fury In The Slaughterhouse wrote a number of songs that couldn't have been more typical of the band, yet they explore the challenge well on "Every Heart Is A Revolutionary Cell."

Their first new material since 1997 for which they are currently performing Summer shows in support of the new album, the first single 'Bourbon County Line' is gaining some decent airplay in the United States lately. "We wanted to make a record in the true Warrant fashion," states Erik Turner, Warrant founding member and guitarist. "I think we accomplished that sound again. It sounds like what a Warrant record should sound like." The band's four founding members -- Turner, Jerry Dixon (bass), Joey Allen (lead guitar) and Steven Sweet (drummer) -- are together for the first time in over a decade. BRAND NEW SIN Will Follow Up With 'Tequila'
07.18.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
New York quintet BRAND NEW SIN are set to return with a voracious Hard Rock/Metal assault laden with soaring, captivating melodies and crushing anthems. Entitled "Tequila," the album is set for an October 3rd release. Soon after completing a six-week nationwide tour as direct support to Black Label Society last Fall, BRAND NEW SIN entered Method Of Groove studios in Brooklyn with producer Joey Z (Life of Agony, Stereomud) to begin tracking "Tequila." They've just emerged with the final recording, which was mastered by the acclaimed George Marino (Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses) at Sterling Sound, which also features a guest vocal appearance by Peter Steele (Type O Negative) on the track 'Reaper Man' and is a good representation of what this group is ultimately capable of creating. Brand New Sin also recently recorded a new version of the entrance theme music for Big Show, the 7-foot, 500-pound ECW wrestler. The theme, 'Crank It Up,' was first heard on the compilation CD "WWE: Wreckless Intent," which debuted at #8 on the Billboard charts. Joe Altier (vocals) checks in with the following report: "The album is now complete. We recorded this one live as a band, and we think it perfectly captures our raw energy. Hopefully, everyone finds the new tunes as 'intoxicating' as we do. We feel that a lot of bands nowadays make things sound too polished, and we have been told for years that our albums are good but our live shows are much better, so that's what we went for. Stay tuned to our website www.brandnewsin.org and our MySpace page www.myspace.com/brandnewsin for all news and tour dates. See ya soon." It's the stunning blend of Altier's captivating roar and melodic overtones mixed with the band's gritty, rock-solid rhythm section, stunning dual guitar solos and pummeling hooks that helps Brand New Sin stand out from the pack and appeal to a diverse audience. "Brand New Sin is unyielding rock 'n' roll power and timelessness," says the vocalist. "You can pick our record up 20 years from now, and it will still feel as fresh and relevant as it does today."
[FREE MP3] ALLISTER Finish Trek In U.S., Prepare For UK
07.17.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
Drive-Thru Records recording artists ALLISTER are currently on the road finishing up a string of U.S. dates tonight before heading over to the UK for a tour there beginning July 25th. The band released their third full-length album, "Before The Blackout," last year. Maybe more than anything, that disc is a defiant declaration from a veteran batch of road warriors who refuse to conform to trends and remain dedicated to touring endlessly and writing songs that remind them of the great Rock they grew up on, be it The Ramones, Screeching Weasel or Green Day. To achieve such an impacting sound, Allister shuffled their formula a little, adding elements of Power Pop and Album Rock into their Punk/Pop foundation. "So many bands right now sound the same," says Allister vocalist/guitarist Tim Rogner. "We grew up on pop/punk, and that's what we love to write, but we also want to do something different, so we tried to incorporate more straight-up rock 'n' roll stuff like Foo Fighters and Marvelous 3, because I think a lot of that is missing from this kind of music." "Before The Blackout" incorporates sing-along melodies, break-neck chord changes, and witty and sentimental lyrics - all elements that have cemented Allister as a standout act on the modern music scene. Their sophomore album, "Last Stop Suburbia," has sold over 80,000 copies to date. Tour Dates:

[FREE MP3] INTRONAUT Full-Length Debut Expected 8/22
07.17.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
August 22nd marks the date of release for "Void," the debut full-length from Los Angeles Metal quartet INTRONAUT. The album is the next step forward by one of the scene's more exciting new bands, and is bound to turn heads in the Metal world. Drummer Danny Walker, a member of Calfornia grinders Uphill Battle, and Sacha Dunable, guitarist for L.A. Doom band Anubis Rising, conceived Intronaut. They shared a common interest in playing something forward thinking with an emphasis on forceful songwriting. Ideas were exchanged and allowed to brew for a few months before the two began writing. The new project intrigued recent L.A. immigrant (and former Impaled guitarist/Exhumed bassist) Leon Del Muerte enough to join on guitar and vocals. Walker and Del Muerte bonded during their time spent touring together in Exhumed, so the three found it relatively easy to adapt to one another and a fresh style of music. All that was missing was a bass player to complete the equation, who they found in Joe Lester, an old friend of Dunable's, who recently left UC Santa Cruz with a BA in music. Having extensive experience playing Jazz, Funk and traditional Indian music, he still jumped at the chance to join Intronaut - his musical proficiency complementing the songwriting nucleus and adding an extra dimension to the overall sound. The music the quartet produced was heavy, technical, abstract, but above all listenable. They quickly wrote and recorded four songs that would make up their first release, the "Null" EP, the band so pleased with the end result that Intronaut promptly went from side project to full-time band status. Momentum built quickly, with the band playing many regional shows and selling over 200 CDRs of the recording, both at shows and through their website. The EP caught the interest of Chris Logan and Goodfellow Records and a recording deal was signed shortly afterwards. Goodfellow re-released Null in February 2006 to help introduce Intronaut to a wider audience. Recorded at Shiva Industries studio with John Haddad (Phobia, Eyes Of Fire) and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side, "Void" is a solid step forward by a young band ready to take things to the next level.

[WATCH] MOONSPELL Focus On New Headlining Tour
07.07.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
Portugal's #1 Metal export MOONSPELL will embark on their first headlining tour in five years come mid-October. Vocalist Fernando Ribeiro says: "Last time we headlined was late 2001, after the release of 'Darkness and Hope.' The support band was Lacuna Coil on their very first American experience. We can't wait to get back to play our own show and to underline the great ties we built in all of our tours there with our small but very dedicated fan basis. 'Memorial' is intense live, and we want our American shows to follow up what we have been doing in Europe so far. This time around fans can expect better and bigger production. We are finally bringing our light team with us. We will have the full strength of 'Memorial' - the theatrics... the passion... it will all be there," enthuses Ribeiro. Supporting Moonspell on the aptly-named "Nocturnal Mourning" tour will be Katatonia and Daylight Dies. Ribeiro comments: "I love Katatonia, and I think they are the most brilliant band around. 'Dance Of December Souls' is still my album for the rainy days. Daylight Dies caught my attention with an advance single, and since then I purchased ;No Reply; and ;Dismantling Devotion; to get really deeply into this band that, with a life of their own, brings me back to the glorious days of Death Doom, a style so close to my heart and soul. I believe it is a great, great package with original, individual bands that do it for the passion and for the music. The moonfest for all undergrounders! The Euro fans are very jealous!" Tour Dates:

[LISTEN] THE FLASK Digital EP Here, LP's On The Way
07.06.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
THE FLASK, the new band featuring well-known guitarist Kenny Olson, are currently making their musical debut with a new digital 3-song EP containing the songs 'Shuck 'N Jive,' 'Holy Roller' and 'Gold Rush,' which is now available from all major digital download sites. Olson, known to millions as the main axeman for Kid Rock's backing band, Twisted Brown Trucker, shreds it up in typical style on the new tracks. Along with Kenny Olson, The Flask is comprised of music veterans Brent Grunow on lead vocals, Jason Price on bass and Shannon Boone on drums/percussion. It was inevitable that the foursome eventually got together to form The Flask, since all are originally from the Detroit/Michigan area and have a great love for Rock 'N' Roll and the musical greats that came before them. In his home studio, Olson began writing songs with drummer Shannon Boone (a.k.a. the production team for The Scorpio Brothers). The rest quickly fell into place. "Brent [Grunow, singer] was brought to me by a mutual friend of ours to produce a demo for him," Olson explains. "He came in from New York... and we got in my studio and him and I just started writing song after song together -- me and him and Shannon -- and it ended up turning into The Flask." With the addition of bassist Price, The Flask began to hone their sound, which shines through on the upcoming album "Match In The Gas Tank," which was mixed by the legendary Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kiss) and is due from Takes The Biscuit September 12th. From early standout tracks such as 'Killer In A Cadillac' to the haunting 'Dark Moon' and infectious 'Aero Park,' it's clear that The Flask will help to fill a void that has been missing in the Rock market place for far too long. The group also crafted an epic in 'Gold Rush,' which features a four-minute guitar solo by Olson. He says The Flask will satisfy "anybody who wants to see a really rockin' show. And the band has a lot of the element of that old Detroit sound that once was around back in the early '70s." Kenny Olson has also played with some of the biggest names in the music business, including Sheryl Crow, Metallica, Chaka Khan, Hank Williams Jr., Buddy Miles, and Aerosmith. He has also played on several Jimi Hendrix tributes, which he considers to be some of his most important work.
[LISTEN] PAUL WELLER DVD Expected From Liberation
07.05.06
(RockAndMetal.com)
Following hot on the heels of the double live album "Catch-Flame," Liberation Entertainment will be releasing "As Is Now - Paul Weller" on DVD on August 21st. The timely offering will be Weller's first live DVD since he achieved the 2006 Brit Award for "Outstanding Contribution To British Music." The DVD includes footage of the "Live At The 100 Club Concert," with performances of 'Broken Stones,' 'Make It Alright' and 'Town Called Malice'; a documentary entitled "The Making Of 'As Is Now,'" and a full length interview with Paul Weller himself. Recorded in just 2 weeks, "As Is Now" -- Weller's ninth solo album and the inspiration behind the DVD -- has been critically acclaimed as a "milestone record" - marking a "dazzling return to the form which made Wildwood and Stanley Road central texts to Britpop a decade ago." Weller decided to get the band into the studio to make the album immediately after their highly successful and emotionally charged Spring 2005 tour, keeping the momentum going and channeling their residual energy directly into the record. On making the album, Weller says that he "really wanted to get that feeling of energy and excitement, of cutting it live onto the record." Working intensively at the Oasis Wheeler End Studio with the production team responsible for the pared down sound of Studio 150 -- Steve Cradock (guitar), Steve White (drums) and Damon Minchella (bass) -- Weller emerged with an album of an urgent style reminiscent of his early days with The Jam and "Weller's best batch of new material in years," according to The Independent. Weller's September 8th, 2005 gig at London's 100 Club was to an intimate audience of just 150, and his first performance at that venue since 1984. The "As Is Now - Paul Weller" DVD captures 42 minutes of highlights from a set drawn from his solo career, including tracks from "As Is Now," and is testimony to the fact that for Weller playing live "still fills me with excitement... Rock and roll is the only thing that unites people, and its great to get that vibe back again." During the 46-minute documentary, Weller tells Paul Moody, music journalist, that "As Is Now" is the "best thing I've done in years - certainly the last 10 years... I just feel good about it ...to feel that inspired again."
