JET BY DAY: 'Cascadia'
(Kindercore KC081) |
Athens, Georgia-based band JET BY DAY has a lot to offer the contemporary rock world on their latest release, entitled "Cascadia."From the fuzzed-out opening of the first song ('Worldwide') to the almost hypnotic, brooding emotion of the last one ('Cascadia'), JET BY DAY plays new rock music that's bound to please the emo/nu metal masses as well, with it's overall heavy feel.
This is a great example of new rock at it's best -- a nice combination of heavy grooves, swirling guitars, Dave Matysiak's emo/screamo vocals and catchy song hooks that leave you with a real appreciation of this band's individual musical style without having to think about it too hard.
Another good thing here is that JET BY DAY comes off as an honest band at first listen (none of that "rock star" pretentiousness seems to be evident here), which just makes it that much easier to accept them and their music at face value.
If comparisons to other bands have to be made here, the first one that floats into my mind would have to be The Smashing Pumpkins (it's mostly the octave-oriented guitar work, plus JET BY DAY's got a female bass player as well in Amy Burmeister, too).
Then again, being compared to other artists can run the gamut from high flattery to downright insult for a band (or any of it's individual members), for that matter...
So let's just say I like this CD a lot, and hats off to Kindercore for giving this hometown band a shot on their label.
My personal pick for radio airplay off this album would have to be 'Dying In The Spotlight' (track #4), with it's thumping catchy groove, and simple-yet-hooky song structure. Better yet, go check out JET BY DAY for yourself at the band's official website, www.jetbyday.com.
