BREAKING LACES: 'Sohcahtoa'
(Sidewinder) |
What I like most about the debut album "Sohcahtoa" by BREAKING LACES is the combination of minimalistic instrumentation, thoughtfully arranged in a neat and easy-to-listen-to format of short songs that each tell their own story. These acoustic-based songs, sprinkled with some neatly placed electric guitar parts -- as well as all those catchy fuzzed-out breaks and choruses -- all make for a very infectious combination that had me wanting to keep on listening all the more...
The wide variation of moods and styles of each song as they naturally moved in and out of various stylings one after the other is also very appealing: Acoustic pop on to folk/rock then on to a garage-type sound -- yet each one sharing the same listener-friendly style of songwriting.
Frontman Willem Hartong also shows a real sense of honesty in his lyrics and his singing for all to see, too. Not pretentious, no useless guitar solos or trendy stretches to be "different" -- just good, honest music that can't help but make you feel like the vulnerable human being that you are.
