STEVE MARRIOTT 3-Disc Anthology On Way
12.02.05
(RockAndMetal.com)
Castle Music have announced the February 27th 3-disc release of STEVE MARRIOTT's "Tin Soldier - Steve Marriott Anthology," the first ever cross-career collection of one of British Rock's finest songwriters and frontmen. From roots as a successful child actor -- Marriott played the coveted role of the Artful Dodger in the musical "Oliver!" -- he then met bassist Ronnie Lane and joined his band THE PIONEERS, which morphed into one of the greatest Mod bands of all time, THE SMALL FACES. Released with the full cooperation of the remaining members of that group, this 3-CD slipcased set includes of plethora of unreleased material, plus numerous obscure and unavailable tracks - making it a must-have purchase for the collector. As a joint venture with Universal Music Group, "Tin Soldier - Steve Marriott Anthology" includes all of STEVE MARRIOTT's biggest hits with both THE SMALL FACES and HUMBLE PIE. The set also includes a rare recording of 'Consider Yourself' from Oliver!, recorded at the start of Marriott's successful career, which was cut short by a fatal house fire in 1991. STEVE MARRIOTT was born on January 30th, 1947 in London. A successful child actor, by the mid-'60s he was working in a local music shop, where he first met Ronnie Lane. Though best known in the U.S. for their hit 'Itchycoo Park,' THE SMALL FACES enjoyed much greater success at home in the UK, reeling off a series of hits there in songs such as 'All or Nothing,' 'My Mind's Eye,' and 'Lazy Sunday,' as well as the classic 1968 album "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake." The chart popularity of 'Lazy Sunday' rankled STEVE MARRIOTT, however. He'd recorded the song as a joke and it was released despite his objections, and when the more thoughtful 'The Universal' failed to crack the Top 20, his dissatisfaction only increased. Marriott's tenure with THE SMALL FACES ended after he stalked offstage during a New Year's Day 1969 performance. He soon recruited ex-HERD guitarist Peter Frampton to form the Hard Rock combo HUMBLE PIE, and after months of woodshedding at Marriott's Essex cottage the group issued its debut single 'Natural Born Boogie,' cracking the UK Top Five. The album "As Safe As Yesterday Is" followed, but again American success eluded STEVE MARRIOTT until the release of the 1971 HUMBLE PIE live album "Performance - Rockin' The Fillmore," which went gold. Although Frampton left the band soon afterward, 1972's "Smokin'" was a relative triumph, reaching the U.S. Top Ten. Subsequent efforts failed to achieve the same heights, however, and HUMBLE PIE disbanded in 1975. After the release of the solo album "Marriott," in 1976 STEVE MARRIOTT joined in a SMALL FACES reunion, then four years later reformed HUMBLE PIE with original drummer Jerry Shirley. After two more albums, the group again dissolved. Marriott lived in the United States from 1979-1983, after which he moved back to London, and spent the better part of the 80s playing in various bands. STEVE MARRIOTT was planning to reunite with Peter Frampton again when he lost his life in a tragic house fire on April 20th, 1991.

Oakland, California-based Metallers ALL SHALL PERISH have released a new demo song titled 'Eradication' with new vocalist Eddie Hermida (ex-GUNMETAL GREY). Along with new lead guitarist Chris Storey, they are nearing the end of the writing process for their still untitled sophomore album, which will be released by Nuclear Blast Records. This year saw the band touring with acts such as AGNOSTIC FRONT, DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR, HATE ETERNAL and KRISUN, while playing shows with everyone from COMEBACK KID to KREATOR in support of their first full length re-release on Nuclear Blast. "After touring with some of the best in hardcore and death metal, we really got inspired to take this band full on in both directions and I'm sure everyone will hear the influence. All I can say is thank you so much to people like Erik Rutan, Derek Roddy, Roger Merit and Vinnie Stigma....thanks for being true inspirations. We have parted ways with our vocalist Craig Betit, and he remains a friend for life to all of us and is livin' it up on the east coast makin' bank; we all wish him the best of luck. Our new material will have something for every heavy music fan! We have all matured musically (some of us were only 18 at the time of the last album), you can expect a lot of variation amongst the songs....We are again ready to rock, bitches!" ALL SHALL PERISH blasted on to the bay area scene in 2002 playing every kind of show imaginable. They quickly found themselves embraced by every facet of the insanely diverse Bay Area music scene from Emo to Technical Death Metal. After recording their own self-titled 3 song demo, Japanese label Amputated Vein Records decided to release the first ALL SHALL PERISH full-length album in 2003, entitled "Hate.Malice.Revenge." 2 years in the making, several Bay Area lineups were gutted for members to make the album. With five completely different-minded people with musical tastes all over the board forming ALL SHALL PERISH, it made for lots of arguments and holes in walls. However, a common love of Metal and Hardcore along with a general distaste for so much crap coming out pushed ALL SHALL PERISH into a brotherhood and into the studio to produce what would become "Hate.Malice.Revenge." Those 8 album tracks proved to become an underground favorite over the next year, as ALL SHALL PERISH slammed the stage along side acts such as BLEEDING THROUGH, DYING FETUS, BRUJERIA, AS I LAY DYING, SIX FEET UNDER, HATE ETERNAL, DIECAST, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, MORTICIAN, UNDYING and many more. Late 2004 also included a tour with VEHEMENCE and CREMATORIUM. In December of last year, ALL SHALL PERISH signed a worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast.
[FREE MP3] COLLECTIVE SOUL Will Release Live DVD
12.01.05
(RockAndMetal.com)
On February 7th, multi-platinum recording artists COLLECTIVE SOUL will release their first-ever live DVD, entitled "Home: A Live Concert Recording With The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra." The upcoming release will be issued on the band's own El Music Group record label, and will also be available as a two-disc CD set. Recorded in April of 2005, the concerts were filmed in the band's hometown of Atlanta, Georgia during two special sold-out performances featuring the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. The 20-song collection spans ninety minutes and encompasses hits from throughout COLLECTIVE SOUL's seven studio albums, including their latest, "Youth." DirectTV will also broadcast "Home: A Live Concert Recording With The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra" as its' "Free View Concert" throughout December. Recording in an orchestral musical setting was a new experience for COLLECTIVE SOUL, and enabled them to reinterpret their own #1 hits. Songs such as 'Shine,' 'December,' as well as 'The World I Know' and 'Precious Declaration' have all been given a new twist due to the sound of the recording, and the fact that the newly independent band now have the rights to their own songs and can give them new life. Seamlessly merging their music with the symphonic arrangements, "Home: A Live Concert Recording With The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra" enables fans to experience COLLECTIVE SOUL founders Ed Roland (vocals/guitars/keyboards), Dean Roland (guitars) and Will Turpin (bass/percussion) along with Joel Kosche (guitars) and Ryan Hoyle (drums) like they never have before. Comments Ed Roland: "Working with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra was really a unique experience. I never imagined that all of these young musicians could make our songs sound so beautiful in the most classic sense." "The kids really brought everything up a level by helping to create another dimension in the music" states Dean Roland. "Those two nights were one of the highlights of my career thus far. After the first night of rehearsals, both the band and symphony found an amazing blend of two musical entities." Adds Will Turpin: "We had been dreaming about this idea for a decade, to finally perform Collective Soul songs with a full orchestra was truly a dream come true. Performing with the Atlanta Youth Symphony was a big part of the energy level, and the kids and the band felt excited and privileged to be a part of that evening." COLLECTIVE SOUL are celebrating one of their best years ever in 2005. Selling over 250,000 copies, the "Youth" album is highlighted by the disc's three singles in 'Counting The Days' (which hit #4 on the Rock Radio Charts), 'Better Now' (which hit the Top Ten on both the R&R and Billboard Hot AC charts), and the newly-released third single 'How Do You Love,' which is the fastest-charting single in the band's history. Beyond traditional radio play, 'Better Now' is included in high-profile NASCAR promos, Kellogg's Special K commercials, and was included on actress Denise Richards' TV show "Sex, Love & Secrets" along with the band performing the song on an episode of "Charmed." 'How Do You Love' is also featured in the new Richard Gere film, "Bee Season."

GOREFEST guitarist Boudewijn Bonebakker has posted the following report on how the band coped with the recent snowstorm that ripped through their native Holland during rehearsals, and effectively immobilized the entire country for a couple days: "When I rode my bike to the pick up point thought, what a lovely yellow the leaves of the beech trees have today. Yes, it was a bit windy and some rain drops made my jeans wet, but other than that I thought it was nice autumn weather. Me and Ed were being picked up at the railway station by Pieter (our sound guy) and his drum kit stuffed van. Frank would be arriving later and JC came directly to the rehearsal studio by car. We set up our gear and the drum kit and rearranged the studio several times to make the cramped space workable. JC and I got in the car at half past three to pick up Frank. There were some snowflakes coming down and we thought that was kind of cute. When we got back with Frank we started working our bones through the immense set Ed had thought out for us. Every four songs or so we stopped to have a coffee break. Eventually, by 19:00, we'd managed to play most of the songs on the list. It was time to have yet another trip to the railway station to get home for the night. Little did we know. When we got out, Holland was white all of a sudden and because of that, traffic was completely congested. The trip that normally takes about 15 minutes was now taking us more than an hour. At the station I got on my bike, only to be thrown off immediately by the wind. Ed tried several ready waiting trains only to find out that none of them would actually bring him home. JC and Frank had, considering the circumstances, a fairly easy ride only to reach a stand still several kilometers before home (it eventually took them a total of four hours to get there). Next day everything seemed back to normal again. Ed had slept over at my place and after some nice coffee and warm rolls with cheese we got in the car a bit late to go to the rehearsal studio once again. At the studio, we found JC and Frank completely frozen up in their car waiting for us, because we had the key to the studio in our possession. Some cursing and bickering later we picked up our guitars and drum sticks and got at it again. The songs started to sound a bit better and we drank less coffee than the day before. At night things went a bit smoother. Ed caught a train home and Frank anticipated his never getting home that night by sleeping over at JC's again. Next day, Ed called me on the phone to say that no trains were coming in or out of Rotterdam so he couldn't make it. Being the swell guy that I am I got in the car and drove the one and a half hour drive to his home and back. We got to the studio, made some coffee and waited for Frank and JC to drop in. After a good rehearsal session where the smell of alcohol residue oozing out the pores of sweaty men infested the studio more and more, we all went our way with a fairly confident attitude regarding the upcoming club shows... I haven't heard from them since, so I'm guessing they all got home this time."
[WATCH] JOHN ENTWISTLE Trio Of Solos Is Expected
11.30.05
(RockAndMetal.com)
December 12th is "red letter day" for fans of one of the most influential bass players in Rock music, when Castle Music (a subsidiary of Sanctuary Records) will release a trio of JOHN ENTWISTLE solo albums in "Mad Dog" (1975), "Too Late The Hero (1981) and "The Rock" (never issued previously in the UK). All albums will be released with bonus tracks, demos and rarities. Before Entwistle came along as a member of THE WHO, bassists seldom stood out for their playing, and few casual listeners knew or cared what purpose the four-stringed instrument served. After JOHN ENTWISTLE came along, however, things changed. After three solo releases in a span of three years, Entwistle decided to form his own "band" for his fourth non-Who release, "Mad Dog." Credited to JOHN ENTWISTLE'S OX, the band greatly expanded to include horns, keyboards, and strings to the usual Rock band set-up (bass, vocals, guitar, drums). Entwistle's most ambitious release contains quite a few highlights, such as the autobiographical 'Cell Number 7' (which recounts THE WHO's 1974 Montreal arrest after trashing a hotel room), the Country-tinged title track, and the horn-driven 'I Fall To Pieces.' Originally released on Decca Records in 1975, the album was recorded at the same time of the filming of THE WHO's "Tommy" film and the recording of its soundtrack. "Mad Dog" was also the last album to be produced by the legendary John Alcock. Bonus tracks here are single versions of both the title track as well as 'Cell Number 7.' 1981's "Too Late The Hero" featured the signature guitar work of Joe Walsh along with drummer Joe Vitale, with the album's nine tracks focusing on themes of love, disco and passion. The new version of "Too Late The Hero" includes 5 bonus tracks in demo versions of 'Sleeping Man,' 'Dancing Master,' 'I'm Coming Back,' 'Love Is A Heart Attack' and the song 'Overture.' Billed as the "lost" JOHN ENTWISTLE album in the UK, "The Rock" was recorded in 1986 and saw a U.S. release in 1996, but was surprisingly never released domestically in Britain. Featuring a young Zak Starkey on drums, "The Rock" is a must have for all Entwistle fans. Bonus tracks on the album include outtakes of the tracks 'Casualty,' 'Light In The Dark' and 'Break Your Heart,' a demo version of 'Love Doesn't Last' and an early version of the song 'Heartache.' From 'Boris The Spider' and 'Whiskey Man' to 'My Wife,' JOHN ENTWISTLE had a knack for capturing dark humor that made every release recorded by THE WHO that much more interesting, and even contributed a couple of songs to the band's milestone album, "Tommy." Entwistle's first solo album, "Smash Your Head Against the Wall" (1971) was, in many ways, a "lost" Who album of sorts - recorded the way the bassist would've handled the group. "Whistle Rhymes" came next in 1972, followed by "Rigor Mortis Sets In" (1973).

CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth checked in recently with the following studio update regarding the recording of the band's next opus: "Dear loyal readership, friends and would-be English metal journalists: The time has come once again to update your good selves on the activities and nocturnal emissions of the band as we approach our fourth week here at The Chapel studios in the pounding verdant heart of Lincolnshire. Thus far, the drums have been recorded along with the bass for the entirety of the record and are sounding great, although a small problem did arise at one point when Adrian (Erlandsson, drums) noticed that he'd been recording with a cracked cymbal. This was no small problem to correct as it meant having to re-record several tracks again, but record them he did and probably more to his and our satisfaction. Vocals are well underway by a few weeks and are going well despite having to slot them around drum editing, but at least they're underway. Our first mission was to finish our version of Samhain's 'Hallowe'en II' for the forthcoming 'Underworld 2' soundtrack, a song that originally was to feature original vocalist Glenn Danzig way back on the 'Nymphetamine' session but fortunately stayed its ground unfinished. It may surprise a few people to know that this song is probably the first Cradle Of Filth song to feature clean vocals from myself, albeit just the chorus parts, but don't expect an emo ballad by any means, this is still a C.O.F. rendition after all! Live-wise, the forthcoming British tour is being rehearsed for in between sessions, and our replacement keyboardist Rosie is filling in Martin's shoes with aplomb. There definitely is an air of trepidation building in the studio as the tour creeps up on the band, everybody being eager to flip the coin onto the other side in regards to getting out there and fucking things up live (as opposed to fucking things up in the studio and flipping each other the finger!). We have decided to undertake two others covers in 'Stay' by Shakespeare's Sister, which will see Liv Kristine again sharing vocal duties, and 'Temptation' by eighties new wavers Heaven 17, which will also see Harry (formerly of Dirty Harry) guest. As for the rest of the album, it is hard to say how songs like 'Libertina Grimm,' 'Tonight In Flames' or 'Cemetery And Sundown' will fan out - this being the culmination of the first studio session with only the bare bones in place at the moment. On our eventual return, with more vocals being addressed and the guitars underway, we should start seeing the light behind the darkness, and the songs finally rising into some distinguishable, though rancid life. Incidentally the current DVD, 'Peace Through Superior Firepower,' is now in stores and the track from the live show, 'From The Cradle To Enslave,' is hitting the airwaves to coincide in time with its release. So much for a quiet time around the studio then. Hope this keeps you up to date for the time being, another slowgress report should reach you by the Xmas period, if not we're either dead or just sitting around hoping to be..."
[FREE MP3] QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS Will Tour States
11.29.05
(RockAndMetal.com)
Some of Rock's greatest anthems will be performed live again across America after more than 20 years, as QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS have announce they will play a 23-date tour of the United States and Canada this coming Spring. The tour announcement comes only a matter of weeks after QUEEN and Rodgers ignited sold-out box office and strong media attention with two showcase performances at New Jersey's Meadowlands and Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl on a stop-off along the way to their recent sold-out Japanese tour. Away from the North American concert circuit for more than two decades -- a forced retirement of sorts brought on by the tragic loss of QUEEN frontman Freddie Mercury, QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS will launch into their coast-to-coast tour Friday, March 3rd in Miami, Florida at the American Airlines Arena. Spending six weeks on North American soil, the band will closely re-route it's triumphant 1982 North American tour, bringing it back to the heartlands of Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, among other U.S. cities, plus Canadian stops in Toronto and Vancouver, where the tour winds up on April 13th. Tickets for the much-anticipated shows go on sale at the earliest December 3rd, with on-sales across the country at different dates up until December 17th. Tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster, with a special pre-sale starting today at www.queenonline.com or www.paulrodgers.com. The collaboration between QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS was cemented when May, Taylor and Rodgers performed in public together for the first time last Fall at the first annual UK Music Hall Of Fame Awards in London. "There was a natural chemistry between us when we performed together in London. Brian and Roger brought a new dimension to my songs," said Rodgers. "The idea took hold for us to do something together after that, and the momentum has taken on a life of its own." The momentum took the shape of a 32-date European tour this past Spring. "It was more than enough," say May and Taylor, "to persuade us that it was the right time to return for a lengthier period of dates. And it is going to be great to be back in some of our favorite cities." Tour Dates:

DARKANE drummer Peter Wildoer has posted the following tour report on the band's official web site: "First of all, I have to say that this tour has been far more better than I could ever have expected. We've done and seen so many cool things that the memories will last a lifetime. The crowds at the gigs have been awesome and it's soo cool that people show up early to see us, thanks! It's nice to meet all the fans afterwards at the merch booth and talk to them. I've written soo may autographs that I actually do the same one from time to time now! I guess we've made lots of new fans on this tour and that's the whole reason with the tour, of course also to play for the ones that already know us. Even though we get to play a very short set I enjoy every second of it. "For me it's an honor and a huge inspiration to play the same stage as the other drummers every day. They freakin' batter their kits soo hard every day, great work guys! The first 12 days we shared bus with Strapping Young Lad and I got to spend time with my biggest metal drumming influence Gene Hoglan. When I saw Gene live for the first time in 1993 I could not in my wildest imagination think that we ever would sit in a tour bus together, crazy! I think that a drummer coming to a show on this tour will not be disapointed seeing these unique drummers. One thing is for sure, I have to work on my double bass drumming after seeing the other three drummers blast their way through their songs. "When we were in Florida and swimming in the pool in the wonderful sunshine we got the news that our loved ones at home had gotten the first snow. Not looking forward to that weather when we get home. Prefer the warmth as we right now are rolling into Las Vegas for a day off and Byron's (Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory) wedding. Looking forward to spend some time in this world known city. "A big congratulations to the couple that got engaged during our set in Houston, TX. They surely looked happy afterwards, good luck! "We also spent a day off in New Orleans. It looked like a warzone when we drove into town. Poor people that got hit by this horrible hurricane. We went to the french quarters which were beautiful and dangerous because of their Hand Granade drinks. I got way beyond drunk much because of the Soilwork guys, thanks... ;-) We surely had a great time there, I think? "We are planning to film the gigs in L.A. (Anaheim and Hollywood) for a possible future DVD. We'll do a few different songs on the two shows to get as many songs filmed as possible. So be sure to go to both shows to get more of Darkane! "Well, that's it for now. We're in Las Vegas right now and here we will spend all our million dollars we've earned so far on Darkane..." DARKANE are touring in support of their fourth album, "Layers Of Lies."
[WATCH] JOHN LENNON's Killer Now Infamous For 25
11.28.05
(AP)
Twenty-five years ago, Mark David Chapman stamped his name into history by shooting four bullets into JOHN LENNON's back - a desperate, senseless grab for the kind of fame the voice of a generation was so steeped in. Instead, all he gained was infamy. "I want to be important," Chapman later said of his mind-set before the murder. "I want to be somebody. I was never anybody." The journey from nobody to notorious started in Decatur, Georgia, where he grew up with his parents and sister. After high school, Chapman worked as a camp counselor at an Atlanta YMCA, and was briefly enrolled at Covenant College, a Christian university in Georgia. But he dropped out, broke off an engagement, and entered a dark period of depression. In the Spring of 1977, Chapman moved to Honolulu, where he attempted to kill himself using the exhaust from a car. In the following years, Chapman, a devout Christian, would take exception to Lennon's perceived anti-religion beliefs. At the height of Beatlemania, Lennon had famously proclaimed THE BEATLES "more popular than Jesus," and later sang in 'Imagine': "Imagine there's no heaven." At the same time, Chapman developed an obsession with J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher In The Rye," the landmark novel that focuses on a disaffected youth, Holden Caulfield, during a trip to New York City. Though previously a great fan of THE BEATLES, Chapman began attaching Caulfield's favorite slander - "phony" - to Lennon. He made that assessment after seeing photos of Lennon atop his exclusive Manhattan apartment building, the Dakota. "At some point, after looking at those pictures, I became enraged at him and something in me just broke," Chapman would explain later. "I remember saying in my mind, 'What if I killed him?'" "I felt that perhaps my identity would be found in the killing of John Lennon." Believing himself the embodiment of Holden Caulfield, Chapman, then 25, arrived in New York City on December 6th, 1980. Two days later, he bought another copy of Salinger's book and wrote in it, "This is my statement." He went to the Dakota and waited for Lennon. When he arrived, Lennon politely signed an autograph for the pudgy, dark-haired, ordinary-looking fan. Chapman stayed, waiting for Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, to return later that evening. "It was like a runaway train," Chapman would later say of his desire to kill Lennon. "There was no stopping it." Just after 10:50 p.m., the couple exited their limousine and began walking into the Dakota. Chapman unloaded, hitting the 40-year-old Lennon with all but one shot. Then, without a word, he sat down and opened "The Catcher In The Rye." The man whose songs and lyrics had meant so much to so many, died on the way to the hospital. The outpouring of grief was immediate - as was confusion. Who was Chapman? Why did he do it? Chapman signed a statement to police that evening: "I have a small part of me that cannot understand the world and what goes on in it. I did not want to kill anybody and I really don't know why I did it." A brief 1981 trial offered few answers...

Italian Epic Metal icons RHAPSODY are poised to release their first live album ever on Magic Circle Music at the beginning of the year. Entitled
"Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret," the upcoming release consists of recordings of the band's performances made during leg one of MANOWAR's "Demons, Dragons And Warriors World Tour," on which RHAPSODY appeared as special guests this past Spring. The first leg of that tour was highly acclaimed for its stripped down and performance-oriented arrangements, which allowed the band to prove that the music is indeed the message. A testimony of pure energy at over 60 minutes long, "Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret" was recorded at the Albert-Rousseau Arena in Quebec, Canada on June 13th. "This album is exceptionally magical", says RHAPSODY guitarist and composer Luca Turilli. "It combines the song visions with the fun we had on stage and the amazing reaction from the fans." Alex Staropoli, the band's keyboardist and composer joins in: "The reaction of the fans in Canada and the U.S. was just unbelievable. That's why we simply had to name this album 'Live In Canada'. A true dedication!" "Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret" will be released in two configurations: Apart from the regular CD album, which features the complete Quebec show, there will also be a limited edition release including a bonus DVD which will contain exclusive behind-the-scenes-material as well as the complete album in 5.1 surround sound, which sets RHAPSODY epic performance in a whole new light and give the listener a truly monumental audio experience. The track listing for "Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret" includes old favorites from previous years, as well as tracks from their current release, "Symphony Of Enchanted Lands II - The Dark Secret." With the latter release, their sixth album (also available on Magic Circle Music), RHAPSODY continue to pioneer their new style of cinematic Metal aptly dubbed "Film Score Metal" by the label. Over the past 8 years, the band has sold over 1 million copies of their albums worldwide.
