Italian Pagan Metal band ELVENKING will begin mixing their new album, "Wyrd," on December 1st at the House Of Music in Stuttgart, Germany with producer Achim Kohler (PRIMAL FEAR, BRAINSTORM). An early 2004 release through AFM Records is expected. Regarding the album's musical direction, guitarist Aydan told Metal Covenant recently, "The fact is that we didn't want to create a copy of 'Heathenreel,' so there will be some new elements in 'Wyrd'... The songs will be more straight to the point, but for example there is a 12-minute long song, so this doesn't mean that we are easier, or whatever... 'Wyrd' is not a copy of 'Heathenreel,' but it's clearly an ELVENKING album!"

After five albums and 25 million records sold, NO DOUBT unveiled their first retrospective, plus a two-CD/two-DVD Deluxe Box Set and a Rock Steady Live DVD today. Leading the release of "The Singles 1992-2003," is their new single, NO DOUBT's cover of one of the band's favorite '80s songs, 'It's My Life' - a 1984 hit for the UK band Talk Talk. "It feels like the right time to release this collection because it closes a chapter," explains band bassist Tony Kanal. "This is the recap of an incredible journey that we've had and it sets the tone for what will come in the future. We decided not to call it 'Greatest Hits' because that sounded too final...there's more to come from us as a band." The four-disc Deluxe Box Set, entitled "Boom Box," brings together...

Norway's #1 Black Metal band, DIMMU BORGIR, outdid hundreds of competitors and was chosen to administer two songs to the trailer of the upcoming Sony Pictures movie "Hellboy," a comic adaptation comparable to other futuristic cime-fighting action hero films like "Blade" or "The Crow." CREMATORY's comeback album, "Revolution" - originally scheduled to be released on March 1st, 2004 - is now delayed for an indefinite time since CREMATORY has stopped recording in the studio due to band member Markus' wife giving birth to their daughter Janina two weeks before the actual due date. But since more than half the songs on the album are already finished, CREMATORY has decided to release a single in advance on the originally scheduled album release date - a little consolation for the fans. The single will contain the single and album version of the song 'Greed,' a cover version of Metallica's 'One' and a ballad named 'Farewell Letter,' as well as a video clip for 'Greed' - which was wrapped just a few days before Janina was born.
[LISTEN] PINK Untroubled By Quiet Media Reception For 'Trouble'
11.25.03
(AP)
After the multiplatinum success of her last album, PINK could be excused for feeling little blue about the early response to her new disc, "Try This." The first single, 'Trouble,' failed to catch on at radio and didn't crack the Billboard Top 20. And the album debuted at No. 9 with approximately 147,000 copies sold in its first week; "M!zzundaztood," notched 220,000 sales in that period when it came out two years ago. But if PINK is discouraged, she hides it well. Laughing during an interview, the bleached-blonde singer simply shrugs off the troubles of "Trouble." "I don't judge myself on how well my songs do at radio, or how much my album sells. A failure and a success is all how you look at it. I've been creative to my highest potential at this point of my life, and...

ROKY ERICKSON's reputation as a mad musical genius is both well documented and well deserved. Beginning with his stint fronting psychedelic pioneers The 13th Floor Elevators in the late Sixties, all the way through his post-mental institution, sci-fi-themed solo albums of the Eighties, Erickson created a body of work that's as inscrutable as it is brilliant. But a new collection of previously unreleased rehearsal recordings, "Don't Knock The Rok!," helps shed light on the troubled Texan's bizarre career. The demos were made in 1978 while Erickson and his band The Aliens were preparing to record "The Evil One" with Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook. The new twenty-three-song set, culled from the archives of Roky's one-time...

GEORGE HARRISON's First Guitar Auctioned In London
11.23.03
(AP)
Beatle GEORGE HARRISON's first guitar -- "a real cheapo" his parents gave him -- has sold at auction for more than $469,200 in London. The guitar was part of an annual Beatles sale by music memorabilia firm Cooper Owen, conducted Thursday at the Hard Rock Cafe in London. Bids were taken at the cafe, by phone and on the Internet. Harrison's father spent about $5.95 for the Dutch-made Egmond guitar. In "The Beatles Anthology" book, Harrison described it as "a real cheapo, horrible little guitar but it was OK at the time." Another guitar, which Harrison gave to his late friend Spike Milligan of The Goons, sold for about $25,500. Auction items also included autographed photos, a contract to play a club show and a corduroy coat that John Lennon once wore.

Five years ago, an aspiring songwriter named BOB GUINEY made the traditional industry rounds showcasing his music in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams. Like many before and countless others since, his efforts yielded rejection, and the band he fronted that traveled under the moniker Fat Amy never got the national shot he desperately sought. One of the record labels that did take that initial look back then, and hosted a showcase for the artist, was Wind-Up Records. When Guiney showcased for the start-up label, Wind-Up had just released their first signing (the band Creed). For the last 25 years, all an aging GRATEFUL DEAD fan had to do to win the instant admiration of a Gen-X or Gen-Y counterpart was to utter these eight words: "I was there the night they closed Winterland." THE GRATEFUL DEAD gave some 2,500 concerts across three decades -- give or take a couple hundred -- and New Year's Eve 1978 at a decrepit old ice rink in San Francisco is revered as possibly the greatest of them all. To those who were there for the last concert ever held at Winterland, a Hunter Thompson remembrance of the 1960s clearly applies to that night as well: It represented "the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." Now the rest of the world can learn what all the hoopla was about with the release this month of the two-disc DVD boxed set, "The Closing Of Winterland." "It was cathartic in a way. It was the end...

Having reunited with singer Rob Halford, JUDAS PRIEST will release a new studio album next year, then launch a coinciding world tour to mark their 30th anniversary.

(AP)
Record producer PHIL SPECTOR, the 1960s recording-studio wizard who created pop music's "Wall Of Sound," was charged Thursday with murder in the shooting death of a woman at his home last February. Spector, 63, pleaded innocent at an arraignment Thursday afternoon in the slaying of 40-year-old Lana Clarkson, a B-movie actress and model found dead in the foyer of his Alhambra mansion. Spector waived his right to a speedy trial. The judge set a Jan. 23 hearing to choose a date for a preliminary hearing to determine whether the case should go to trial. Spector, his hair falling to his shoulders in curls, wore a long black coat and platform shoes with 3-inch heels. He refused comment outside court. He has been free on $1 million bail since his arrest for investigation of murder shortly after the shooting Feb. 3. Authorities have not given a...

Colorado Black/Death metalers THROCULT have finished a new video for the song 'Eclipse Of The Blood Moon,' from their current "Soldiers Of A Blackened War" album. The band is also hard at work on writing new material for their next album for Crash/Pavement Records. Formed in 1997 under the name Throat Culture, the band changed their name to THROCULT in 2000. With a demo released in October, 2001 entitled "De-Facto," the band's abilities really began to shine, showing THROCULT had a touch of Industrial and at times even a Gothic side to their style of Death metal. Back home in Denver, THROCULT soon found themselves on stage with big name acts like Cradle Of Filth, In Flames, and God Forbid. "Soldiers Of A Blackened War" proves THROCULT are on a clear path to metal devastation.

11.21.03
(Reuters)
Seeking a bigger cash payment and a potentially smoother exit from the music business, Time Warner Inc. opted on Thursday to pursue a sale of its music unit to an investor group rather than a deal with a rival, sources familiar with the matter said. Time Warner, the world's biggest media company, aims to hammer out a final deal to sell Warner Music, home to such artists as Madonna and Led Zeppelin, as early as Sunday with a group led by media moguls Edgar Bronfman Jr. and Haim Saban, these people said. The decision, after a board meeting on Thursday, is a radical departure for the music industry. The five big record labels have been talking about merging with one another for years, but U.S. and European regulators have consistently frowned on any further consolidation. The recording industry, it seems, doesn't hate absolutely everything about illicit music downloading. Despite their legal blitzkrieg to stop online song-swapping, many music labels are benefiting from - and paying for - intelligence on the latest trends in Internet trading. It's a rich digital trove these recording executives are mining. By following the buzz online, they can determine where geographically to market specific artists for maximum profitability. "The record industry has always been more about vibe and hype," said Jeremy Welt, head of new media for Maverick Records in Los Angeles. "For the first time, we're making decisions based on what consumers are doing and saying as opposed to just looking at radio charts." One company, Beverly Hills-based BigChampagne, began mining such data from popular peer-to-peer networks in 2000 and has built a thriving business selling it to...

AESMA DAEVA's 'The New Athens Ethos' Now Available

AESMA DAEVA's latest album, "The New Athens Ethos," has been issued on the Root Of All Evil label. Seeking to strike a balance of modern with ancient elements has been an aim of AESMA DAEVA since it's inception. Incorporating eastern modes of rhythm and pitch, the overall tone of their music is dark, moody, hypnotic and mystical. "The New Athens Ethos" takes the listener on a philosophical journey through the ancient glory that was Greece, while still harboring an enthusiasm for modern textures and instrumentation that strech the realms of conventional stereotypes like 'Metal' or 'Goth'. Melissa Ferlaak's operatic vocals are quite the contrast to the force and fury of the rest of AESMA DAEVA.

Music Industry Recovery on Pause Until 2005, Study Says
11.19.03
(Reuters)
The music industry is in for at least two more years of pain, with a sales recovery not expected until 2005 at the earliest, a report said on Tuesday. According to London-based research firm Informa Media Group, the retail value of global music sales will drop to $28.2 billion this year from $30.9 billion in 2002 and to $28 billion in 2004 before returning to growth in 2005 as new Internet music services take off. "The music industry is in a bad way at the moment but the continued fall in the value of music sales is certainly not irreversible. The success of the new download services proves there is a viable market for legitimate digital sales," said Simon Dyson, an Informa analyst. Dyson said the major music labels Universal Music, Sony Music, Warner Music, EMI and Bertelsmann's BMG have not acted decisively enough to...
