THE BEATLES' 'Let It Be... Naked' Tells Interesting Story
THE BEATLES
11.18.03 (Billboard) In spite of the album's title, it wouldn't have been right to "Let It Be," given the circumstances and outcome of THE BEATLES' January, 1969 recording project. Several attempts by engineer Glyn Johns to complete an album to the band's satisfaction, and additional production by Phil Spector notwithstanding, THE BEATLES' penultimate full-group effort had never attained the original intent: a live, no-overdubs recording akin to their first album, "Please Please Me." Twelve thousand, seven hundred thirty-seven days after they started, that intent will be heard today with the release of "Let It Be... Naked," a de-mixed and remixed version of the "Let It Be" album, originally released in May, 1970. Surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and... [full story]

FEAR FACTORY 'Archetype' Studio Recording Update
FEAR FACTORY
11.18.03 (RockAndMetal.com) If you're a FEAR FACTORY fan, you'll likely have noticed that their official site is down right now. Not much news has been reported on them lately. Here's a studio update from bass player Christian Olde Wolbers: "Everything is going great! We just finished tracking 14 songs at Rumbo Recorders in LA. This is where Guns N Roses recorded all their albums! The studio had a great vibe. A lot of history in this place! Roy Orbison still wanders thru the hallways! I must say this was the smoothest record we have ever recorded. We tracked the whole thing in 28 days! The record is called "Archetype" and was produced by FF ourselves. We used Ken Marshall (Skinny Puppy) to engineer and record the album. Another Canadian!! LOL..." [full story]

METALLICA CD Sales 'A Bummer,' Says James Hetfield
METALLICA
11.18.03 (Reuters) U.S. sales of METALLICA's latest album, which fell off the pop charts earlier this month, are a "bummer," according to the veteran group's singer, James Hetfield. But the band is not giving up on its U.S. fans, and plans to launch a six-month tour of indoor arenas on March 2nd, it announced backstage at The American Music Awards on Sunday. METALLICA performed at the event, but lost the race for favorite alternative music act to Linkin Park. "St. Anger" has sold about 1.5 million copies in the United States since it debuted at No. 1 in June. "It's a bummer," Hetfield said. "In Europe it's doing really good, and some other places ... It is what it is. We can't change that. We do our best and that's all we can do." Drummer Lars Ulrich said "St. Anger" is Metallica's best seller in Europe since its 1991 self-titled release, the so-called... [full story]

BLOOD FREAK Album Unearthed By Razorback Records
BLOOD FREAK
11.16.03 (RockAndMetal.com) Razorback Records has unearthed the underground's best kept secret for over 10 years - the unheard of, unknown, cult-as-hell grind/gore album from the legendary "lost" late 80's/early 90's band, BLOOD FREAK. Entitled "Sleaze Merchants" and recorded back in 1990, the album is a relic of classic grindgore/death metal that brings to mind the catchy, morbid riffs and vocals of Impetigo and the grind/speed devastation of Repulsion. This is -- simply put -- grind/gore before its time. Horror fans are also in for a treat as master splatter writer/artist Chas Balun (Deep Red, Gorezone, etc.) has drawn an amazing piece of artwork for the "Sleaze Merchants" album. Indie Music Companies Oppose Concentration And Mergers
11.16.03 (RockAndMetal.com) European independent music companies oppose the joint venture announced last week between BMG and Sony and also the planned merger between EMI and Warner. IMPALA, the independents' body in Brussels, is confident that any and all such mergers by the majors will be blocked because of the impact on competition. The independents do not accept that these moves are a valid response to the crisis in the recording sector which needs less rather than more concentration. The independents object because further market concentration causes more damage to competition in the music market, reduces consumer choice and severely impacts cultural diversity. It will enhance the majors' dominance to the detriment of the independents who represent the entrepreneurial and creative part of the music market. [full story]

A recent addition to that label's growing roster of artists, WASTEFORM have previously issue a split CD and the 2002 full-length album, "Crushing The Reviled," on the Step Up Presents label. For those who aren't familiar with WASTEFORM, they are a really brutal, heavy and catchy-yet-technical Death Metal band pretty much in the vein of early 90's New York Death Metal such as SUFFOCATION, PYREXIA, INTERNAL BLEEDING, etc., with a hint of DYING FETUS too.

Universal Music Group Reaches Deal To Purchase Dreamworks
11.15.03 (AP) Universal Music Group announced last week it has reached a deal to buy DreamWorks Records, the music unit of the entertainment company formed by film and music moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The purchase is expected to be completed early next year, subject to regulatory approval. Universal plans to fold DreamWorks Records into it's Interscope/Geffen/A&M label, which is run by veteran music executive Jimmy Iovine. DreamWorks Records launched in 1996. "Despite the challenges of the music business today, Universal is acquiring a wonderful asset and the sale will assure the strongest possible future for our artists," Mo Ostin, head of DreamWorks Records, said in a statement. The deal could help Universal, the music industry's global market leader, retain it's position atop the U.S. music market if a proposed merger between Sony Corp. and Berteslmann AG is finalized.

THE FUCKING CHAMPS' 'Greatest Hits' Due On Monday
THE FUCKING CHAMPS
11.14.03 (RockAndMetal.com) THE FUCKING CHAMPS' new album, "Greatest Hits," is due for release this Monday on Matador Records. Largely instrumental, "Greatest Hits" is a combination of THE FUCKING CHAMPS' releases, I-V. The album alternates between "let's-squeeze-every-Queen-riff-into-one-song" rockers, ultra-pretentious-mellotron-laden space-outs, and strange attempts to outdo Billy Gibbons' after-school-special-of-the-extreme-future-sequencing. For those of you who have been around the block a couple of times, THE FUCKING CHAMPS take you to a time when things were simpler. Listen to "Greatest Hits," and you will cascade on gleaming metallic waves of relentlessly riffing guitars, drums and synthesizers -- the composite of which inspired the carving of all those hair-band names into your desk at school.

BEASTIE BOYS Backed By Ninth Circuit In Copyright Lawsuit

11.13.03 (Billboard) The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit last week affirmed a summary judgment in favor of THE BEASTIE BOYS in a copyright infringement suit, Billboard Bulletin reports. In 1992, The Beastie Boys got a license from ECM Records to sample a copyrighted sound recording from James W. Newton Jr.'s flute composition, 'Choir.' The group copied a six-second, three-note sequence and looped it throughout it's song 'Pass the Mic,' featured on the 1992 Capitol album "Check Your Head." Eight years later, Newton sued The Beastie Boys, alleging that the remix infringed the "heart" of his flute composition, and that the band should have obtained a license from him as the composer of the underlying work. VAN MORRISON London Concert Cancellation Is Costly
VAN MORRISON
11.13.03 (Reuters) A British court has ordered singer VAN MORRISON to pay $66,868 in damages to a hotel owner who said the singer had ruined him by canceling a concert. Gary Marlow had sued the 58-year-old singer and his production company, Exile, for up to $668,680 over cancellation of the concert at The Crown Hotel in western England last August. But Justice Peter Creswell ruled Tuesday that Marlow was only entitled to $66,868, including an $33,434 advance fee paid to Exile. Marlow's claim included the advance plus lost profits from tickets, alcohol, food and tobacco, and damage to the business' reputation. Marlow had turned down "substantial offers" by the Belfast-born singer to settle the case, the court heard. The 17th-century inn had previously hosted concerts by Peter Green and John Mayall.

The record industry blames its recent sales slump on file-sharing services like KaZaa, which it says are havens for piracy. Last year, major labels issued "copy-protected" CDs that prevent them from being played on computers. 11.12.03 (RockAndMetal.com) "Suppressive Acts I-X," the aggro-tastic new album from LESSER (J Lesser), has been released on Matador Records. A collection of ten songs that try to bind a history of metal to a career in electronica, "Suppressive Acts I-X" is a study in thriftiness; reusing a base of 50-or-so samples, and manipulating them enough to render them useful across an entire album. Such a constraint makes for a far more cohesive outing than 2000's "Gearhound. Metal song aside, if you think "Gearhound" was schizophrenic, then "Suppressive Acts I-X" is meticulous paranoia.
