"I think people are in for a real surprise when they hear the new material. We've incorporated loads of blast beats, huge harmonies and some really interesting ideas. Mick Jagger and co have struck an exclusive deal with electronic outlets to sell the band's upcoming live DVD, "Four Flicks." The decision has angered a number of major stores including HMV, Music World and Sunrise Records who have all withdrawn stocks of Stones music in protest. New rules that were to be implemented by the Federal Communications Commission would have allowed media owners to go on a buying spree, enabling a single company to control all of a market's airwaves. Then a former radio pirate and his ragtag political group took on the government -- and won. The prosecutor could not participate in court because of health reasons, and a new date has not been set. Gaahl risks a 6-year-sentence if he's found guilty, and the outcome of the court trial will be announced when it happens, according to the band. Should things turn out better with local promoters, GORGOROTH will play the metal festival in Tel Aviv on March 7th. The band is also working on possibilities of touring both in the U.S. and Mexico.

11.03.03 (AP) The recording industry filed 80 more federal lawsuits around the country last Thursday against computer users it said were illegally sharing music files across the Internet. Those 80 people were among 204 who had been threatened with lawsuits earlier this month by the Washington-based Recording Industry Association Of America unless they contacted the trade association to discuss a financial settlement. The RIAA said the remaining 124 people had approached music industry lawyers about settling the claims. The group previously filed lawsuits against 261 others. It said Thursday it has reached settlements with 156 people, who defense lawyers have said agreed to pay penalties ranging from $2,500 to $7,500 each.

11.02.03 (AP) Record producer Phil Spector's $1 million bail was extended a second time while the district attorney's office considers whether to charge him in the shooting death of a woman at his home in February. Spector, 62, who is free on bail, has denied he killed Lana Clarkson . He suggested in an Esquire magazine interview that Clarkson, an actress and hostess at the House of Blues, may have shot herself. 11.2.03 (AP) Two MIT students who thought they'd found a way to give their fellow students access to a huge music library without running afoul of copyright law hit a snag Friday when the school shut down the service in the midst of a licensing dispute. The "LAMP," or "Library Access to Music" system officially went live Monday, pumping music into dorm rooms over the school's cable television network. 10.31.03 (Billboard) ABBA's Agnetha Faltskog is putting the finishing touches on her first album in 16 years for release in March 2004. Basic recording of the album is finished, with final overdubs and tweaking nearing completion with sound engineer Anders Neglin. "Agnetha chose music that is very important to her from earlier in her life," Neglin says. "As we started to get into it we added our own color to the songs." A single is planned for release in January on an as yet undetermined label. Her last album was 1987's Peter Cetera-produced "I Stand Alone."

The band shot a video recently in Los Angeles for the song "I Could Care Less," which features a ton of band performance footage and a pretty crazy story line. P.R. Brown and Dez Fafara both directed the video. DEVILDRIVER are also about to commence a tour of both the Northeast and Midwestern United States in November.

10.30.03 (RockAndMetal.com) A multi-artist ELLIOTT SMITH tribute concert featuring BECK will take place at The Henry Fonda Theatre on November 3rd in Los Angeles, CA. Other artists scheduled to perform at the concert include Beth Orton, Bright Eyes, Grandaddy, Radar Bros, Rilo Kiley, and Future Pigeon. A screening of the Elliott Smith documentary "Strange Parallel" will be shown before the concert. All proceeds from the tribute will go to The Elliott Smith Foundation For Abused Children. ELLIOTT SMITH died on October 21st from a self-inflicted stab wound, later determined to be a suicide.

Coming across as something akin to Sick Of It All in a backyard brawl with Slayer, HATEBREED melds walls of devastatingly crunchy guitars and savage steamroller rhythms. The band developed a formula that included the best parts of death metal, thrash-punk and NYC hardcore. "We wanted to make this one a little more brutal than Perseverance, but at the same time catchier," says frontman Jamey Jasta.

10.30.03 (AP) COURTNEY LOVE turned herself in to Beverly Hills Police on Tuesday afternoon to face two felony drug-possession charges. A warrant was issued for Love's arrest on October 22 after the Los Angeles district attorney's office received evidence from police that Love was in possession of the prescription painkillers hydrocodone and oxycodone when she was picked up on October 2nd following an overdose. The felony charges are separate from Love's other drug case, a misdemeanor. "It's not much of a case, if a case at all," Love's criminal lawyer, William Genego, says. "It was literally like three pills. They were not found on her." Love's arraignment on the felony charges is scheduled for November 12th.

10.30.03 (RockAndMetal.com) Poland Technical Death masters DECAPITATED Decapitated have completed the recording of their new album, tentatively titled "The Negation." It was recorded at Hertz Studio in Poland, with engineers Slawek and Wojtek Wieslawski. Bassist Martin reports that the new material is 'very, very strong,' with a thick guitar sound. Among the titles set for inclusion are 'The Negation,' 'Long Desired Dementia,' 'Three-dimensional Defect,' 'The Fury,' and 'Sensual Sickness.' Release is scheduled for February.

10.30.03 (Billboard) Previously unreleased and rare songs from the likes of Liz Phair, Pete Yorn, The Wallflowers, Chris Stills and Semisonic's Dan Wilson appear on a new compilation just released by Trampoline Records, entitled "Greatest Hits Vol. II." Founded last year by Pete Yorn, The Wallflowers' Rami Jaffee and Marc Dauer from The Jukebox Junkies, the label had already made the album available online via their website earlier this month as a $6 download. To promote the album, Yorn is headlining a November 1st show in Seattle, WA at The Crocodile Cafe. Also appearing will be Trampoline's first signing, Nadine.

10.30.03 (AP) Last week, the Mississippi Supreme Court ended a legal battle over the photographs and songs of bluesman ROBERT JOHNSON, saying his son is the sole heir to the royalties. Johnson, a traveling musician who recorded 'Cross Road Blues,' 'Rambling on My Mind,' and 'Hellhound on My Trail,' is considered the first modern bluesman. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986. The musician's illegitimate son, 71-year-old retired gravel truck driver Claud Johnson, said he was unsure what the latest court ruling will mean to him. "I really don't want to say too much about all of this because we've had such a hell of a time," he said.

10.30.03 (Rolling Stone) KORN and LIMP BIZKIT are set to co-headline November's "Back 2 Basics" tour, marking the first time the two bands have shared top billing in five years. The twelve theater and club dates are slated to kick off on November 10th in Las Vegas and wind up on November 28th in Toronto. KORN will be supporting new material from their upcoming sixth album, "Take A Look In The Mirror," and LIMP BIZKIT are still playing in support of their "Results May Vary" album. "We're calling the tour Back 2 Basics because this is how it was in the beginning, with both of us playing small halls," says Korn's Jonathan Davis.

Entitled "Singles," the LP includes tracks like "Animal Nitrate," "So Young," "Stay Together" and "She's In Fashion," as well as two completely new songs written especially for the release. "It's a singles collection, not a best of," says lead singer Brett Anderson. The new tracks are "Love The Way You Love" and "Attitude."

The month-long trek will also include a stop at this year's New Jersey Metal And Hardcore Festival on November 15th, marking the band's first U.S. festival appearance. Their new offering was released on October 7th to a slew of rave reviews from mainstream and underground publications alike. These purveyors of the extreme rose from the ashes of several highly influential underground bands - Grimple, Schlong, Word Salad, Buzzoven and Ojo Rojo.

10.29.03 (NME) THE CURE are to headline a charity concert in London in December. The band will headline a show at the London Islington Carling Academy on December 11 in aid of the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, an organization who work with children and adults with debilitating conditions. "We have always admired the work carried out by Nordoff-Robbins, and it is a pleasure for us to be given this opportunity to lend our support - it's a great idea and a wild bill, and we are really looking forward to this show - it should be something special," said lead singer Robert Smith.

10.29.03 (RockAndMetal.com) RAKOTH's third album, "Tiny Deaths," is nearly completed. The band is presently recording yet more material for inclusion on the album. The band has taken a more atmospheric approach with this new album, displaying an almost Avant-experimental edge to the songs. Needless to say, it still sounds like RAKOTH through and through, though some of the fans of their traditional style may be left scratching their heads.

10.29.03 (RockAndMetal.com) Both LINKIN PARK and PAPA ROACH are among the artists confirmed to play the sixth annual Smokeout Festival on November 15th at the NOS Event Center in San Bernardino, California. Pennywise, Cypress Hill and Superjoint Ritual are also scheduled to appear on the main stage, with a host of smaller and independent acts on a second stage. A DVD of live performances from last year's festival, entitled "Smokeout Live 2002," will be available on November 18th. Meanwhile, LINKIN PARK and PAPA ROACH are both working on upcoming new releases.
