C.C. ADCOCK Opines Louisiana Music Scene
10.28.05
(RockAndMetal.com)
Lafayette, Louisiana guitar-wielding Blues/Rocker C.C. ADCOCK was on the road with former Louisianian Lucinda Williams when Hurricane Katrina smacked New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Adcock's tour with the Grammy-winning Williams launched in early September, just days after Katrina struck. That which the hurricane wrought was the prime topic of backstage conversations. "Lucinda was like everyone," Adcock says. "Tons of questions. 'What's going on down there? Tell me what you know, what you saw.' She asked me about friends. And then, of course, the conversations digressed into political and what-to-do conversations. Depending on what day it was, the story kept changing. There were different things to worry about." All the while, though, Adcock and Williams were more interested in helping those in need than blaming those in power for the mistakes they made before, during and after the storm. "There'll be time for that," Adcock says. The adjacent lofts C.C. ADCOCK and fellow LIL' BAND O' GOLD member Dickie Landry inhabit in downtown Lafayette -- dubbed "Disgraceland" -- became home away from home for displaced musicians and artists, including New Orleans producer Mike Napolitano and his girlfriend, singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco, and members of THE IGUANAS. "Yeah, we've had a few guests," Adcock said. "Lots of friends and personalities are stranded or restarting over here or just biding their time before they can get back. People came from both directions, from Texas and New Orleans, depending on what storm was brewing. "It's been nice to have people around. Sorry about the circumstances. From the art and culture side of it, you can walk up and down Jefferson Street now and there's French Quarter musicians playing in the streets. Dixieland in the streets of Lafayette is funny." Though many Louisiana musicians are dislodged, Adcock isn't fearful for the music's future. "It's always changing anyway, cross-pollinating and mutating and transfixing," he said. "I don't think that you can find any definitive reason why it's gonna be for the worst. Any time you stir it up, which literally it has been, it yields positive energy, even out of a negative situation. A good example of that is people re-realizing how much their home means to them. They're feeling that strong vibe. For those people who can't get home or have moved on to other places, memories and longing are great fodder for art and music. I think everyone definitely has their hearts slightly opened up." Adcock, too. He hasn't penned any lyrics that specifically address the events of the past few months, but he has written new music. "Definitely been writing a lot," he said. "That's because things have been stirred up and those feelings that you're feeling, they come out in notes and melodies." C.C. ADCOCK's latest disc is a much-praised Roots music adventure called "Lafayette Marquis."

German Modern Thrash Metallers NEAERA have posted the following update on their official website: "Hi everybody! It's about time for another one of them steamin' hot news updates! After having to spend the last week recovering from some more or less serious cases of sudden disease, and even being forced to cancel two concerts, we are finally back and able to frequently check our site and answer your people's questions, should you have any. As you all know, we have spent the better part of the last month traveling and moshing through Europe with the Hell On Earth tour. We want to thank all the people who made this tour such a great and overwhelming experience for us, meaning especially our tour and stage managers Schlumpf and Danny of M.A.D. tour booking, all the great people and our brothers in End Of Days and Agents Of Man and our friends in Evergreen Terrace, Heaven Shall Burn and As I Lay Dying, all the promoters who organized the shows, but most of all you, the fans, all you people who have embraced our music in such a positive and awesome way. What a great first tour to be on, what a great tour for everybody involved! We want to ask you people to please send us pictures of all the shows if you happen to have any. We would be very grateful for some nice photos, and we will also post the ones we like most on this site! So please, keep 'em coming!!! Unfortunately the show in Cottbus was cancelled; we hope to see you people in Leipzig :)!!! We will spend the next couple of weeks writing more new material and hopefully -- yet probably -- wrapping up our second full-length, which as you all know will be recorded in January 2006 at Danish Hansen Studios with Jacob Hansen at the helm. We are anxious to record our second album. From where we are at this point in the song writing process, we can say that it will be a very diverse album - both melodic and brutal. The title of the record will be that of one of the songs off of it, namely 'Let The Tempest Come.' The artwork for the album will be done by our friend Adam Hunt, drummer in US grindcore sensations Graf Orlock and former member of As Hope Dies (r.i.p.). We will of course keep you people updated on the whole developing process of the album in the days ahead. The online shop will remain closed for some time due to us being short of merch (oops...). As soon as we have new stuff available, the shop will be opened again. One last thing: Due to the loss of his Music Man Stingray bass on the Hell On Earth tour, our bass player was forced to sell his backup bass in order to be able to afford a new Stingray bass. Well, that should be about it for now, hope to see you people at one of our next shows! Stay brutal! Cheers, Neaera"

Jody Joseph, a popular New Jersey music instructor and frontman for the band JODY JOSEPH & THE AVERAGE JOE'S (www.jodyjoseph.net) has teamed up again with the New Jersey chapter of the Yellow Ribbon International Suicide Prevention Program (www.yellowribbon.org) for the second "L.I.V.E. - Rock For Life" benefit concerts. L.I.V.E. is an acronym for "Live, Inspire, Vibe, Energy." The number one priority of L.I.V.E. is to increase awareness about the prevention of teenage suicide, which is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and young people ages 10-24 in the state of New Jersey. Due to the success of last winter's one-night, sold-out event, which raised over $15,000, this second fundraising effort has expanded into two performances to be held on Saturday, November 12th at 7:00 PM and Sunday, November 13th at 4:00 PM, at the Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ (732) 502-0600. Tickets for the performances are $15, and are available at www.ticketmaster.com , and the Stone Pony box office. Tickets are expected to sell out again for this year's event. Performing on Saturday night will be recording artist Jody Raffoul (www.jodyraffoul.com), "one of Canada's rock scene's best-kept secrets (Brandon Sun Entertainment, Canada)." Joining Raffoul will be very special guests Kenny Olson (www.kennyolson.com) on lead guitar and Jimmie Bones (www.jimmiebones.net) on keyboards, both from Kid Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker Band. Both L.I.V.E. concerts will feature performances by JODY JOSEPH & THE AVERAGE JOE'S, as well as Joseph's students, who range in age from 5 to 43. Scott Fritz, after losing his daughter Stephanie at the age of 15, channeled his grief into pushing for the formation of the New Jersey Youth Suicide Prevention Council after it was created by the New Jersey legislature. Fritz has since been appointed by the governor to the council and is the Vice Chairman. The council has been charged with collecting data on completed and attempted youth suicides, creating a public awareness program, and getting prevention and education programs started throughout the state. "Suicide is an emotionally charged issue that is still socially taboo to many people. As a result, communication about it is often difficult, if not impossible. We're looking to change that with educational programs that give parents, teachers and others the skills to do more to prevent a child from attempting or completing suicide," states Fritz. The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program is not funded by federal dollars or by large corporations. Rather, donations come from the communities they support. Proceeds from ticket sales, merchandise and an open auction featuring valuable music memorabilia such as concert tickets, donations from local retailers and gift certificates to some of the county's most popular restaurants, clubs and spas will be donated to the New Jersey chapter of Yellow Ribbon International. "We are grateful that so many people have gotten involved in this event and with the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program," notes Fritz. "We need to continue spreading our message to teens that it is okay to seek help for yourself or a friend. Stephanie's memory lives on every time we help prevent even one more suicide." The parents of Mike Emme, a popular teen who took his life in 1994, founded Yellow Ribbon International, an outreach program of The Light For Life Foundation International.

"Pain Necessary To Know," the latest musical conundrum from Italian Fusion/Metallers EPHEL DUATH, will be released on Halloween, October 31st via Elitist Records. The band have pushed themselves to the limits on the new recording, as it twists and shakes and bends from bar to bar, each song snaking into the next, meditative calmness exploding into chaos at the blink of an eye. EPHEL DUATH was created in February of 1998 with the precise intent of experimenting in the sphere of Extreme Music. At the root of the group's name lies the concept of a dark and fleeting sound: EPHEL DUATH is in fact the mountain range that defends the kingdom of evil in Tolkien's masterpiece. Initially, the band started out as a duo, with Giuliano Mogicato (voice, guitar, sinth and programming) and Davide Tiso (guitar), the only founding member still in the lineup. Both were eighteen at the time. In October of that year the "Opera" demo wass released; 6 tracks of Extreme Metal with symphonic traits, bringing EPHEL DUATH to be compared with the style of bands such as LIMBONIC ART and EMPEROR. At the end of 1999, the band signed their first recording deal with Code666, at the time an emerging Italian label known for its courageous decisions and opposition to the general trend. In May of 2000, EPHEL DUATH's debut album, "Phormula" was released. A highly ambitious and rich piece of work, "Phormula" emphasized one of the goals that still motivate the band today: not to belong to any specific type of music or movement. After the recording of "Phormula," Giuliano Mogicato left the band due to personal and musical differences, after which followed the most difficult period for EPHEL DUATH, as they remained inactive for approximately one year - and with only one actual member left. In the Summer of 2001, Lee Barrett, founder of Candlelight Records - home to both EMPEROR and OPETH, showed an interest in EPHEL DUATH after hearing a few tracks on the Internet. It was just a few weeks later that Earache Records offered the band a long-term contract through their new Elitist imprint, for which the A&R man is none other than Lee Barrett. In 2002, Elitist added a few bonus tracks to the "Phormula" album, changing the title to "Rephormula" - which gave Davide Tiso the chance to assemble a new lineup and start from scratch on a new album. In the meantime, it takes approximately one year to arrange the music composed by Tiso. Nine brand new tracks and an all-new member base support the "Painter's Palette" album - the outcome of which is both fresh and at times impossible to classify. A marked imprint of Jazz is associated with a solid origin of Extreme Music, all of which translates into a very sophisticated sound. After many positive reviews and live dates in support of "Painter's Palette," the composition of the new album began last Fall. After some necessary lineup changes, EPHEL DUATH are back stronger than ever on "Pain Necessary To Know."

(RockAndMetal.com)
One of the most revered Rock concert albums ever recorded is about to get better next week on November 1st as Rhino Records, in collaboration with Grateful Dead Productions, revisits the shows on THE GRATEFUL DEAD's classic 1969 "Live/Dead" album for the new "Grateful Dead: Fillmore West 1969" release. The three-disc set includes more than three previously unreleased hours of the very best free-form performances from THE GRATEFUL DEAD's legendary stand at the fabled Fillmore West. The collection will be available at regular retail outlets and at www.rhino.com and www.dead.net for a suggested price of $34.98.
A groundbreaking effort, "Live/Dead" was also the first successful 16-track live recording in music history at a time when two track was the standard and eight track was considered state-of-the-art. "Grateful Dead: Fillmore West 1969" is mixed from those same original 16-track master tapes and contains 19 iconic Dead songs presented in pristine HDCD. Recorded between February 27th and March 2nd in 1969, "Fillmore West" distills the essential moments from all four GRATEFUL DEAD Fillmore concerts, and features original vocalist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann on drums, Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, and Tom Constanten on keyboards. The first disc of "Grateful Dead: Fillmore West 1969" mixes covers of classic Blues like Sonny Boy Williamson's 'Good Morning Little School Girl' and a charged version of the signature Bobby "Blue" Bland tune 'Turn On Your Lovelight' with 'Doin' That Rag' and a revved-up shuffle version of 'Cosmic Charlie' from THE GRATEFUL DEAD's 1969 album, "Aoxomoxoa." The second disc is a tape trader's delight, in that it includes for the first time in HDCD the much-sought-after February 28 Fillmore performances of 'Dark Star,' 'St. Stephen,' 'The Eleven,' and a brooding cover of Rev. Gary Davis' 'Death Don't Have No Mercy.' The final disc is highlighted by a 55-minute marathon that sandwiches the customary drum break and improvisational jam between THE GRATEFUL DEAD's own 'Alligator' and 'Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks),' along with a complete version of the band's traditional closer 'We Bid You Goodnight,' originally cut short on the "Live/Dead" album. Deluxe packaging for "Grateful Dead: Fillmore West 1969" features a 72-page hardbound booklet filled with nearly 100 rare photos, and extensive liner notes including a new essay by long-time GRATEFUL DEAD publicist and band biographer Dennis McNally. KORN will release their new album, "See You On The Other Side," on December 6th via a partnership with EMI/Virgin Records. Listening to such new songs as 'Twisted Transistor,' 'Politics' and 'Love Song,' it's obvious that KORN -- Jonathan Davis (vocals), James "Munky" Shaffer (guitars), Fieldy (bass) and David Silveria (drums) -- have purposely opened a door to more creativity and purposeful disarray. "We were sitting there with one less member, and we decided to check out some other types of producers, experiment, and see what happens," says Davis, referring to the departure of former guitarist Brian "Head" Welch (who left for spiritual reasons), and the band's ensuing decision to switch things up in the studio following the self-produced release of 2003's "Take A Look In The Mirror." "It just came to the point where we had to reinvent -- here we are, the four of us -- let's make some music that's different, and music that people are going to flip the fuck out over. We can go in so many different directions as a band - why be closed-minded?" KORN -- who've already sold over 25 million records worldwide and encapsulated their body of work on 2004's "Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" -- entered the studio with a team of producers as different as night and day for "See You On The Other Side," The one constant being Jonathan Davis. He handled the majority of the production on the band's last album, and remains a producer on the new album, joining forces with the likes of The Matrix and Atticus Ross. "We knew we wanted to experiment and see what would happen, but we had no clue it would end up like this," laughs Davis. "It really worked out. We may have lost a member, but we gained another two with Atticus and The Matrix." The result is one of the most revolutionary KORN albums since their debut - a barb-wired, bastard son of blinding musical fury, dark and twisted lyrical candor, and searing, sociopathic tendencies. Yet "There needs to be something more," says Jonathan Davis. "A lot of people are doing 'heavy,' and they're doing it great, but we've always been about pushing the levels and coming up with some new shit. This isn't minimalist, old-school Korn. This is a natural progression for us, and we're kicking it up a notch." While Davis notes that 'Love Song' is a song sure to impress "all my depressed, goth peeps out there," his delivery is more in the style of David Bowie than usual. "When we listen to what we're doing and look at each other with scared, fucked up feelings in our guts, that's when we know we wrote something special," says the singer. "That's how we know we're breaking down the boundaries and doing some new shit, because we're scared about it." In fact, Jonathan Davis found his new co-producers to be the perfect collaborators to free even more of his inner demons. "I've written seven albums worth of shit, and I have my style, but I wanted something different, not the typical lyrics that I always write. I want to come out and say things in a different way, so getting those different people around me, with their different perspectives and different talents, really helped me a lot."
[WATCH] PAUL McCARTNEY Will Release 'Jenny Wren'
10.25.05
(RockAndMetal.com)
'Jenny Wren,' the second single to be taken from PAUL MCCARTNEY's new album, "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard," will be released on November 21st. Fast becoming a live favorite on McCartneys 37-date sell-out "US" tour of North America and Canada, 'Jenny Wren' is classic PAUL MCCARTNEY. The press have described 'Jenny Wren' as "his most poignant and affecting song in years" and "endearing and unexpectedly affecting." 'Jenny Wren' is both a soulful and mournful song with a simple and incredibly effective arrangement. It's difficult not to be moved by the heart-tugging melody. It's an acoustic track in the style of much-loved PAUL MCCARTNEY songs such as ;Mother Nature's Son,' 'Calico Sky' and 'Blackbird.' In fact, McCartney describes the track as "daughter of blackbird." "I was in Los Angeles and I was in one of those moods. I wanted to go and play my guitar in the great outdoors. So I went into a spot in one of the canyons there, lovely nature spot, getting away from all the traffic and sat down and started playing. It's just that kind of genre that I love and I just had a lot of fun, wrote the basis of it there outdoors in the canyon, lovely day, went back home that night to where we were staying and sat around while dinner was getting made and made it up. But it's funny, actually, I was talking to someone about how much I love Dickens. And this person said 'Ah, Jenny Wren, our mutual friend,' which is this character in the Dickens book 'Our Mutual Friend.' She is this really cool little girl who's sort of magical who sees the good in things, and I think subconsciously that reminded me that's where I got it from. But to me it was just something to do with 'Blackbird.' A wren is one of my favourite birds -- a little English bird, the smallest English bird -- and I always feel very privileged to see a wren. So it's a combination of all of that." In a Rock 'N' Roll first, 'Jenny Wren' also features a duduk solo. The duduk, an Armenian wind instrument, is one of the oldest wind instruments in the world. "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard" was released in mid-September to much positive critical acclaim. Upon its release, it went straight into the Top 10 of the album charts in over 14 different countries across the world, including the UK and the U.S. It's PAUL MCCARTNEY's 20th studio album since leaving THE BEATLES, and was produced by Nigel Godrich. A return to the basics for McCartney, "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard" successfully fuses his undeniable songwriting talents with his excellent musicianship. In fact, he is credited with playing the majority of the instruments on the album, which is somewhat reminiscent of "McCartney" (1970), on which he was credited with playing all the instruments. McCartney plays the drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, as well as many less traditional instruments such as the block flute, harmonium and flugelhorn on "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard."

November 11th will see the re-release of MOTORHEAD's current studio album, "Inferno," as a limited "30th Anniversary Edition," which will include a lavish bonus DVD featuring live cuts from their 30th Anniversary party this past June at the Carling Apollo Hammersmith (formerly known as the Hammersmith Odeon), plus additional material in the 45-minute documentary "30 Years: Born To Lose - Live To Win" (which includes interviews with both current and former MOTORHEAD band members Lemmy, Phil Campbell, Mikkey Dee, Philthy "Animal" Taylor, "Fast Eddie" Clarke and long-time album artwork master Joe Petagno) and a video of the making of the clip for 'Whorehouse Blues' as well as the video for the song itself. Former HAWKWIND roadie/bassist Lemmy formed MOTORHEAD (originally known as BASTARDS) in 1975. The first lineup of any consequence consisted of Lemmy (bass, vocals), "Fast Eddie Clarke" (guitar) and Phil Taylor (drums). The press initially despised MOTORHEAD, labeling them "the world's worst band" following the release of their debut album 30 years ago. However, the attitude of the press was to change a mere two years later: "They know they're animals, and they don't pretend to be anything else. Considering there are so many ugly frogs in heavy metal who think they're God's gift to womankind, these Quasimodos even seem charming in a way," a German music magazine noted in 1977. The title song from their album "Ace Of Spades" (1980), became one of MOTORHEAD's greatest classics, followed by another highlight that has gone down in the history of Rock and Metal music: "No Sleep 'Till Hammersmith," which featured live recordings from the Hammersmith Odeon. Eddie Clarke left in the Fall of 1982 due to dissatisfaction with the band's commercial development, who was briefly replaced by former THIN LIZZY guitarist Brian Robertson, who went on to cause a certain amount of tension within the band. According to Lemmy, Robertson "acted like a spoiled diva" - an attitude that was bound to lead to trouble with him. "Robertson never wanted to fit in with Motorhead, but saw himself as 'Brian Robertson Featuring Motorhead Artists,'" Lemmy says. "I had no time for that sort of thing - I want a functioning band." Robertson bid his farewells to MOTORHEAD in 1983 following the release of "Another Perfect Day," and was substituted by Phil Campbell and Wurzel (Michael Burston). The early nineties saw the band's flagship go into a spin, with the band signing their first major deal and thus intentionally trying to tone down their previously unbridled sound with a view to radio compatibility. Their 1991 release "1916" still pleased MOTORHEAD fans, although "March Or Die," out one year later, did not go over as well. Regardless, the band have proved themselves indestructible since, operating as a trio with one guitarist and producing one blazing album after another since 1995.
[WATCH] THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS' 'Best Of' Due

(RockAndMetal.com)
Catapulted to public accolade and major label ranks through their independently shot video for the song 'I'm An Adult Now,' the enduring popularity of THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS now allows fans of the band to relive some of their career classics along with newly recorded material on the November 22nd release of "When We Ruled - The Best Of The Pursuit Of Happiness," slated to be available through EMI Music Canada. The creation of "When We Ruled" saw THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS reunite in the recording studio for the first time in eight years to rekindle some of that uncanny hookability on the new song 'Hey Mary Anne,' as well as a cover of the infamous Prince staple, 'When Doves Cry' (TPOH-style, of course). 'When Doves Cry' was serviced to radio on earlier this month by DMDS, and is corrently receiving major market play in Canada. "When We Ruled" also includes unreleased material, original versions and re-recorded versions of TPOH songs in its 21-song track listing, and serves to reflect on a career of albums and singles built on Indie ethics and DIY tenacity that have been cemented in Canada's psyche over the years, from 'She's So Young,' 'Hard To Laugh,' 'Cigarette Dangles,' as well as 'I'm An Adult Now.' With five full studio albums having flourished along the band's lifeline, "Love Junk, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS' first release -- produced by Todd Rundgren and home to the track "I'm An Adult Now" -- originally went Platinum after its release in Canada. THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS are now set to add a new chapter to their recorded library with "When We Ruled," and are slated to take to the Canadian roads in December for a national tour, with confirmed dates to be announced soon. Finnish Emo/Aggro Metallers CALLISTO are currently at work on their follow-up to "True Nature Unfolds," released via Earache Records back in March of this year. According to a spokesperson for the band: "We are in the middle of pre-production of our second album with Jonas Olsson. So far, we have completed five songs and five songs are in the works. In December, we will head into the studio in the backwoods of the northern west coast of Finland countryside, around where most of us grew up. The album will be produced and engineered by Jonas. The mixing and mastering will be done elsewhere (not yet confirmed), and the album will be released during the first half of next year. Due to the recording process we will not be touring this year anymore. We promise to get back on the road right away next year." CALLISTO are slowly but surely beginning to gain public notoriety within the European Metal and Hardcore scenes. The band has already received surprisingly fanatic support among small circles in different parts of the continent. "True Nature Unfolds" is the band's Earache debut album, and altogether third release. With the current lineup and name, CALLISTO has been around for two and a half years, of which the latter have been easily the most hectic. Including shows in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Baltic countries with bands such as NINE, ENTOMBED, SHAI HULUD, CULT OF LUNA, BURST, FROM ASHES RISE, DEFLESHED, KOMA, SWALLOW THE SUN and ROTTEN SOUND. Add to that the writing process of new material which has also taken it's share of time and energy. However, all has worked toward the benefit of future endeavors. "True Nature Unfolds" wanted to be conceived with great ambition along with people genuinely interested in the band. Prior to his untimely death early this year, NASUM vocalist/guitarist Mieszko Talarczyk (Nine, Nasum, Millencolin, Rotten Sound) recorded and produced the album at his Soundlab Studios in Orebro, Sweden, with the assistance of Jonas Olsson, who had been doing the preliminary work and pre-production in Finland before entering the studio. The finishing touches were put to the album by the master of masterers, Peter In De Betou (Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah, Entombed, etc.). CALLISTO's blend of Melodic sensibilities and aggression make for a delicate but still massive and purposeful form of Metal which comes natural to the band. CALLISTO have yet to ever fall short of their own capabilities, the Scandinavian overtones and repressing melodies of their music leading deeply into the depths of the human mind.
