THE GATHERING's 'Mandylion' Is Celebrated
THE GATHERING
10.21.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Dutch veteran band THE GATHERING and Century Media are set to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the band's 1995 "Mandylion" album with a special "Deluxe Edition." The double CD set features new artwork, a 16-page booklet with song-by-song liner notes from the band and never-seen-before photos from the recording session, with a second CD containing the first demo recordings THE GATHERING did with vocalist Anneke Van Giersbergen in June of 1994 at Holland's Beaufort Studios, and early 1995 at Tilburg's Double Noise Studios in the Netherlands. The 'Solar Glider' track is a complete unreleased instrumental, while the song 'Third Chance' appeared 2 years later in a different version on the "Nighttime Birds" album. "Working with The Gathering on 'Mandylion' is one of my most beautiful memories. To record with such an open-minded band like them... they'd need three sounds when other bands needed 100, and those three sounds were enough to create a gorgeous atmosphere," recalls "Mandylion" co-producer Siggi Bemm. Produced by Bemm with Waldemar Sorychta, who had already worked with TIAMAT, MOONSPELL and SENTENCED to find their sound, "Mandylion" would become a blueprint for female-fronted Gothic Rock and Metal, but it was only just a part of a long-running story that began in 1989, when brothers Hans and Rene Rutten and Bart Smits got together with the intention of starting a band. Soon enough, Hugo Prinsen Geerligs, Jelmer Wiersma and Frank Boeijen joined them, and THE GATHERING was born - their will to experiment rather than imitate providing a fertile musical basis. In 1990, they recorded the rehearsal tape "An Imaginary Symphony." Their first gig took place in January of 1991, while that April the demo "Moonlight Archer" was recorded. After signing with Foundation 2000 Records, their full-length debut album, "Always...," was released in 1992. In 1993, "Almost A Dance" was also released via Foundation 2000. During auditions halfway through 1994 after some well-needed personnel changes, magic appeared in the form of Anneke Van Giersbergen, whose angelic voice fit with THE GATHERING's highly atmospheric music perfectly. It also clicked on a personal level with Century Media, who was willing to give the band a contract, after which the band released "Mandylion." The album was highly successful, especially in the Netherlands, where the single 'Strange Machines' ended up in the Dutch charts, as did the album. "Nighttime Birds" followed in 1997, after which came "How To Measure A Planet?" (1999), "if_then_else" (2000), and several others on the band's own Psychonaut Records. "Mandylion" Deluxe Edition Track Listing: Disc One: 1. Strange Machines 2. Eleanor 3. In Motion #1 4. Leaves 5. Fear The Sea 6. Mandylion 7. Sand & Mercury 8. In Motion #2 Disc Two: 1. FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW Returns
FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW
10.21.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Black Market Activities recording artists FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW checked in with the following update recently from their home state of Ohio following their return from a recent tour of Canada: "Back from tour in lovely Canada. We had no problems at the border, except having to pay some extra cash thanks to one of us having a shady past. Whatever. We also got fucked completely by the kid in Oshawa who was supposed to do that show, but decided to cancel on us. Apparently there might have been a show that day in Oshawa? If there was, please know we had no idea that it was still going on and we haven't been paid for the show at all. The kid won't pick up his phone. Typical. Also, the manager for Mae wouldn't let us play the Circa Survive show in Toronto, so we deeply apologize to anyone who came to that show and expected to see us rock out in true emo fashion! We were taken off the bill the night before the show. I think it's really shitty of Mae's tour manager to do that to us, but we hold no hard feelings against the band. Other than this, the tour was fucking amazing and we can not wait to hit up Canada again in the future! A huuuuge special thanks to Marie in Ottawa for helping us with all our paperwork and being a wonderful host and partying with us two nights in a row! You rule and we had tons of fun hanging with you and Martin and everyone else. People in Canada seem to just be so laid back and different than what we are like here in the United States. We were really impressed by everyone's kind attitude. Also, a special thank you to Johnny O.C. and the boys in Ion Dissonance. You guys get more sick every time we play with you and I truly feel like you are real brothers to us. We will always be friends in this world and the next. Thank you. And um....Beneath the Massacre tore everyone up in Ottawa. Those guys just recovered from a terrible van accident and if you get a chance, check them out and give them your support. They were nice guys. So now what, well... back to the grind for us. We are continuing to work on the new album and have about two more songs to go with principle guitar work before we really dig in and put all the finishing touches on the album. We also are actually playing a show near home in Akron, Ohio on November 4th!!!! I hope all the Cleveland kids and Akron crews come rock out with us that night! I can't wait. In the meantime, email us and let us know how things are in your world... we miss you all. Much love and respect, fassw."

BUCKETHEAD & FRIENDS To 'Enter Chicken'
BUCKETHEAD
10.20.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Moving beyond the late great Bruce Lee flick "Enter The Dragon," BUCKETHEAD & FRIENDS make a striking debut with "Enter The Chicken" on Serjical Strike Records, the label spearheaded by SYSTEM OF A DOWN vocalist Serj Tankian. The release date is October 25th, and master axeman BUCKETHEAD rises to new heights here. Joining BUCKETHEAD ON "Enter The Chicken" is a wide spectrum of vocalists and players including Tankian, Efrem Schulz of DEATH BY STEREO, Saul Williams, Gigi Laswell, Maura Davis of DENALI, BAD ACID TRIP and Azam Ali of VAS, to name a few. When all was said and done, a total of 11 different singers specializing in musical styles ranging from Opera, Metal, Rap, Indie Rock, Grindcore, World Music and everything in between found their way onto "Enter The Chicken." The songs that appear on the new pffering run the gamut from soft female vocal-driven songs as heard on 'Running From The Light' with Gigi Laswell and DENALI's Maura Davis, to sheer blood-pumping Hard Rock like 'Funbus' with BAD ACID TRIP and 'Botnus' with Efrem Schultz. Other highlights include 'We Are One' featuring Tankian (also to be heard on Showtime's TV series "Masters Of Horror") and 'Three Fingers' featuring Saul Williams (which also appears on "SAW II"'s soundtrack). The 11-track adventure is filled with sonic twists, turns and loops that provide listeners with a unique musical voyage that Serg Tankian refers to as "the most diverse rock record this year." BUCKETHEAD, a covertly enigmatic guitarist known to many as the man with the mask and chicken bucket (preferably KFC) on his head, has played with GUNS N' ROSES, PRIMUS, COBRA STRIKE, DELI CREEPS, CORNBUGS and PRAXIS, and has released numerous albums under his own moniker. Starting tomorrow in Orlando, Florida, BUCKETHEAD will be joined by Dan Monti (bass, programming) and Pinchface (drums) on a new U.S. tour in support of "Enter The Chicken." SPITFIRE Sign To New Deal With Goodfellow
SPITFIRE
10.20.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Goodfellow Records has announced the signing of Virginia Metalcore quintet SPITFIRE to a new two-album recording deal. The band, who previously recorded a CDEP for Goodfellow in 2001, are currently finishing up working on a new upcoming full-length album, which will be SPITFIRE's first new release in four years. "We couldn't be happier to have Spitfire as an addition to our lovely family of bands," says Goodfellow Records label owner Chris Logan. "2006 couldn't come soon enough so the world can be witness to a new chapter in this band's career." SPITFIRE spent the month of September recording at Red Planet Studios in Virginia with producer Andreas Magnusson (The Black Dahlia Murder, Scarlet). The upcoming album, tentatively entitled "Self-Help," will be released in early 2006. Already rumored to be one of the most intense, insane and bordering on out-of-control albums to be released in the coming new year, SPITFIRE commonly defy specific genres and their intensity is on par with bands such as CONVERGE and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. SPITFIRE issued several releases themselves as well as contributing to a number of compilation discs before jumping to Solid State Records, home to bands including UNDERNEATH, ZAO & NORMA JEAN. Solid State is the aggressive music imprint label for Tooth And Nail Records, which is home to the likes of FURTHER SEEMS FOREVER and MXPX. The band, at that time a trio, released "The Dead Next Door," their only full-length album for Solid State, in 1999. Following their stint on that label, SPITFIRE regrouped as a quartet, while issuing the CDEP "The Sideshow Whiplash," via Goodfellow in 2001. After months of rumors, the band broke up later that year, with several members moving on to other projects. The band has since recently reformed, adding guitarist Scottie Henry from Metal outfit NORMA JEAN and Dan Tulloh from shock-rocking band SCARLET. Musically, SPITFIRE play a hybrid of Metal and Hardcore that is often compared to bands like EVERY TIME I DIE, THE MELVINS, and even DEADGUY, as well as the speedy Punk Rock of an outfit such as HOT SNAKES. Fans of frantic, chaotic, technical Metalcore should check out this underrated and under-appreciated band when "Self-Help" sees it's release in early 2006.

JERRY GARCIA Comp Of Dylan Songs Near
JERRY GARCIA BAND
10.19.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Next week on October 25th, Rhino Records will release "Jerry Garcia Plays Dylan," a two-disc collection gathering over two hours of unreleased performances from the vaults. The release features Bob Dylan classics performed by THE GRATEFUL DEAD, THE JERRY GARCIA BAND, & LEGION OF MARY, as well as Jerry Garcia's solo take on "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry." Friends, tour mates and titans of the '60s counter-culture, Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan helped define an era with their music. As the leader of THE GRATEFUL DEAD and various side-projects, Garcia was one of a handful of artists who could make a Dylan song his own. Rhino Records in collaboration with J. Garcia Records pays tribute to Garcia's inspired interpretations with the first-ever compilation of those stunning performances. "Jerry Garcia Plays Dylan" will be available upon release at regular retail and online outlets including www.rhino.com and www.jerrygarcia.com for a suggested list price of $24.98. "Jerry Garcia Plays Dylan" includes 15 recordings and more than two hours of unreleased live performances from the Garcia vaults remastered in HDCD. The double-disc collection features Dylan classics performed by the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band, Legion of Mary as well as Garcia's solo take on "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry." Drawing heavily from his work -- both solo and electric -- with the remarkable JERRY GARCIA BAND, "Jerry Garcia Plays Dylan" spotlights nine dazzling performances of songs that span the Bob Dylan canon including 'Tough Mama,' 'Positively 4th Street,' 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door,' 'Simple Twist Of Fate,' 'I Shall Be Released,' 'When I Paint My Masterpiece,' 'Forever Young,' 'Tangled Up In Blue' and 'Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power).' Garcia also leads THE GRATEFUL DEAD through four soulful jams including 'Mighty Quinn (Quinn, The Eskimo),' a song that first appeared on Dylan's "Self Portrait" in 1970, 'She Belongs To Me' and 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue' from 1965's "Bringing It All Back Home" and 'Visions Of Johanna' from 1966's "Blonde On Blonde." Another highlight of the compilation is an astonishing version of 'The Wicked Messenger' by LEGION OF MARY, a short-lived, Jazz and Funk flavored group featuring Garcia, keyboardist and long-time Garcia collaborator Merl Saunders, saxophonist and flutist Martin Fierro and drummer Ron Tutt. "Jerry Garcia Plays Dylan" features enlightening liner notes written by Jerry Garcia biographer Blair Jackson, who tells the stories behind the performances. GRATEFUL DEAD guitarist and singer Bob Weir also contributes to the liner notes, adding a behind-the-scenes look at the bond shared by Bob Dylan and THE GRATEFUL DEAD.

GOD FORBID Update From 'Fury Of The Fall'
GOD FORBID
10.19.05 (RockAndMetal.com) New Wave Of American Heavy Metallers GOD FORBID are currently in the midst of the "Fury Of The Fall" tour alongside MESHUGGAH, THE HAUNTED and MNEMIC, which is actually the group's first U.S. trek in support of their highly-acclaimed new conceptual opus "IV: Constitution Of Treason." The album entered the Billboard Top 200 chart at #119 in its first week of release, and it's also the first time the group has ever appeared in the Top 200 charts. A video for the album's blistering opening track, "End of The World," was just completed by acclaimed director Dave Brodsky (All That Remains, Fight Paris, The Red Chord). Look for it to make its Fuse and MTV2 "Headbanger's Ball" debut late this month. GOD FORBID drummer Corey Pierce checks in with the following tour report: "All right my metal as hell brethren, I have been given the most distinguished pleasure in giving you all out there the lowdown on this tour. First off, we have seen many old friends in these past few days from Massachusetts and Connecticut to New Jersey, son. Everyday has been frickin' amazing. Connecticut was the best show we have ever had in that state. It was really so amazing, and thanks to everyone who was feeling it with us. Our friends from Hatebreed and Shadows Fall also came out and made us feel right at home. Well, I could talk a lot about the Worcester show, but all you need to say about Worcester is it's always a frickin' huge metal time. Now, this is very important, so read carefully: We as a band would, with all our hearts, like to give thanx to all our friends in JERSEY, SON! Much love and respect to our home state for showing us such a great homecoming. You guys are the reason we will always stay grounded and never forget where we come from. I will shut the ratchet jaw for now and look for us in your town soon, and if you're ready for the metal to enter your brain and possess your body, then bitch God Forbid is what you been waiting for. C Money, biatches." Produced by Jason Suecof (Trivium) and Eric Rachel (Atreyu, Dillinger Escape Plan), "IV: Constitution Of Treason" -- a socially and politically charged vision of a post-apocalyptic world -- further displays the incredible creativity and talent of one of the most highly-respected bands in modern Metal today. A limited edition dual-disc version of the release is also available, featuring -- in addition to the album itself -- "The Act Of Treason" - an exclusive, making-of-the-album, behind-the-scenes documentary featuring band interviews and tons of in-studio footage that takes you from rehearsals to pre-production all the way to the final mastering of "IV: Constitution Of Treason."

KADDISFLY Tour Supporting Hopeless Debut
KADDISFLY
10.18.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Hopeless Records recording artists KADDISFLY are set to hit the road through the middle of November on a new North American tour with TOURMALINE, NEAR MISS and LOOK WHAT I DID. From a linear perspective, the concept of KADDISFLY has traversed an enormous distance since its conception in a rural Eugene, Oregon shanty at the turn of the Millennium. With the release of their 2001 EP, "Honorable Mention," 2002's "Humania" EP and their challengingly thematic, 2003 opus, "Did You Know People Can Fly," the band, through incessant touring, broken hearts, financial collapse, and occasional emotional ruin has built an impenetrable underground reputation for emotional substance and creative mutation. Avoiding the music industry's postmodern confines of prepackaged labels and transparent boxes, KADDISFLY have attempted to replace image with substance, novelty with focus, limitation with inspiration, and eyes with ears. Pulling together every lesson and mistake of the first three years, the independently produced and distributed "Did you Know People Can Fly" would offer a brief snapshot of things to come. The audible balance sheet would propel KADDISFLY on their fifth independent West Coast tour and invariably lead to a future courtship with their metaphorical Juliet, Hopeless Records. After over four years of searching through America's nomadic middle earth, the native Oregonians finally found their lover, and so commenced their journey to alter humania and save humanity. Their first quest is the release of their Hopeless debut, "Buy Our Intention; We'll Buy You a Unicorn." An entity that will weave a sleek tapestry of sonic wallpaper for anyone with an open ear or mind, the sharply focused effort promises to offer the versatile, fearlessly thematic, and eclectic characterization of sound that is uniquely KADDISFLY. Comments the band: "We are all of the same mind that if we are going to exist in this business, we will have to perpetually challenge ourselves, take risks, and never create the same record twice. The moment you grow static is the moment your music needs eyes." Tour Dates: 10/20 Charlotte, North Carolina [Tremont Music Hall] 10/21 Myrtle Beach, SC [007 Hard Rock Tavern] 10/22 Augusta, GA [Sector 7G] 10/23 Atlanta, Georgia [Swayzes] 10/24 Jacksonville, FL [Jack Rabbits] 10/25 Orlando, Florida [Wills Pub] 10/27 Boston, Massachusetts [The Roxy Theatre] 10/28 Brandenton, FL [Rockerfellas] 10/29 Tupelo, MS [West Jackson Street Baptist] 10/30 Memphis, TN [The Complex] 11/02 St. Louis, MO [Hi-Pointe] 11/03 Oklahoma City, OK [The Green Door] 11/04 Houston, TX [The Coffee Retreat] 11/08 San Antonio, TX [Sanctuary] 11/09 Odessa, TX [Earls II] 11/10 Phoenix, AZ [Phix Gallery] 11/11 Fullerton, CA [The Alley] 11/13 Hollywood, CA [Knitting Factory] 11/14 South Gate, CA [Allen Theatre] 11/17 Saratoga, CA [The Warner Hutton House] 11/19 Redding, CA [The Dip]

WOJCZECH Geared Up For Full-Length Debut
WOJCZECH
10.18.05 (RockAndMetal.com) German Grind gods WOJCZECH will release their full-length debut album, "Sedimente," on November 1st via Selfmadegod Records. Originating back in 1995, WOJCZECH have undoubtedly become one of the more well-known groups on the worldwide Grind scene, thanks to a steady stream of vinyl split cassette, 7" and LP releases with the likes of DIOS HASTIO, GROINCHURN, SARCASM, ABUSO SONORO, CUT YOUR HAIR, PARENTAL ADVISORY, DIRTY POWER GAME and INSTINCT OF SURVIVAL over the years. After a decade of existence, WOJCZECH will finally unleash their long-awaited debut, which detonates 11 fireshots of nihilistic rage, blast-beat fury and apocalyptic sound. Deranged, frenzied, super-tight metallic Grind with hints of Crust, Thrash, Hardcore, Death Metal and Punk, this is Modern Grind - circa 2005 A.D. Boasting a high quality recording production courtesy of Harris Johns at Spiderhouse Studios (Pestilence, Voivod, Sodom, Kreator), "Sedimente" is highly recommended for fans of bands like ASSUCK, NASUM, HIS HERO IS GONE, etc. WOJCZECH started off in the middle 1995 playing simple Grind Punk after coming together from various other bands that had already been together since 1991. A project with not the biggest intention developed to a full band early by getting in touch with each other through the Hcnetwork, as each band member was already chained into at that time, which was basically a couple of friends sharing similar ideas of musical expression in opposition to the decay of 21st century civilization, as well as doing something more constructive than swimming in daily boredom. WOJCZECH play a sort of nihilistic Hardcore, with the spirit of what some people would call Punk. However, the drive is Grind, with lyrics mostly reflecting misanthropic edges of existence ranging from cynically personal things into political topics. With politics not getting too personal, WOJCZECH don't offers any simple answers to the deaf and degenerated. Moreover, according to the band: "We do our best refusing apathy and self-pleasure/pity, and we do intend to avoid cliches as preaching to the already-converted surely seems pretty contradictionary to us. We are not into slogans, either," they boast. WOJCZECH have played around 500 shows so far over three continents, and look forward to meeting all their fans in the most far-away little smokey hole, and do not hesistate traveling for no more than sonic communications and gas expenses. Through the years, WOJCZECH have played tours in the countries of Peru, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Czech Rep., Slovenia, France, Belgium, Holland, Brasil, Greece, Slovakia, Hungary, Spain, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

TODD RUNDGREN 'Best Of' Live LP Expected
TODD RUNDGREN
10.17.05 (RockAndMetal.com) Castle Music is slated to release a new live album by TODD RUNDGREN in North America on November 15th and in Europe on November 21st. Entitled "Best Of Todd Rundgren - Live," and digitally remastered by Rundgren himself earlier this year, the album includes 13 songs culled from TODD RUNDGREN's archives over a variety of different tours from 1979 to 2004. The album also includes two recent live tracks recorded during 2004's "Todd Rundgren And The Liars" tour. The latter two songs include 'Soul Brother,' originally released on 2003's critically acclaimed "Liars" album, and a stunning rendition of George Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps.' Both songs will also be featured on the forthcoming "Todd Rundgren And The Liars - Live" long-form DVD released in the UK and the rest of Europe in early 2006. This is the first time Rundgren has personally hand-picked and digitally remastered songs from some of his most memorable live performances, and a must for all TODD RUNDGREN completists and a welcome introduction to new fans that are discovering his music for the very first time. "This is different from my earlier 'official' live albums in that the performances are from a variety of shows," Rundgren says. "Basically, it's a production conceit to make it sound like it's all from one show, but they're from various venues and time periods. We go back as far as the mid-80's and all the way up to the last year (2004) with The Liars. We started out with that concept so that the selection of material was tempered by that idea. It's sort of an unusual concept for a record...most of the time you just put out a whole live show. Here, some songs were recorded in small clubs while others were in a concert setting. The venues varied so much that it could be jarring going from one track to the next trying to adjust to the new acoustic space. To make it sound like a whole show we put audience response in between the cuts to make them all flow together. In choosing the material and placing it in a certain order, and even in giving it a little post equalization and texturization, I was going for something that sounded like a typical evening of live music." TODD RUNDGREN was born and raised in Philadelphia, and began playing guitar as a teenager, and went on to found and front THE NAZZ, the quintessential '60's cult group. In 1969, he left that band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the groundbreaking "Runt." But it was 1972's seminal "Something/Anything?" on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted TODD RUNDGREN into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him "Rock's New Wunderkind." It was followed by such landmark albums as "The Hermit Of Mink Hollow" and "A Wizard, A True Star," as well as such hit singles as 'I Saw The Light,' 'Hello It's Me,' 'Can We Still Be Friends,' and 'Bang The Drum.'

THE HAUNTED Are Back In The U.S. On Tour
THE HAUNTED
10.17.05 (RockAndMetal.com) THE HAUNTED made their triumphant return to the U.S. earlier this month on the much-anticipated "Fury Of The Fall" tour and continues to garner new legions of rabid fans with their pummeling Swedish Thrash Metal assault and highly energetic live show. The trek, which also includes MESHUGGAH, GOD FORBID and MNEMIC runs through the end of the month. THE HAUNTED's vocalist Peter Dolving checks in with the following tour report: "Last night was fucking ridiculous and great at the same time. It was an off-date in Grand Rapids at a bar called Ten Bells. We counted 50 people at that place. They had great cheese burgers and the generic whinos cackling in the bar. Well, it was honestly one of the best shows we've played in awhile. Everyone had a great time and well, it was just one of those great truly rock nights. We were supposed to play Harpo's in Detroit, but at the last minute the promoter turned tailcoat and decided to change the deal all on his own accord. So we are not playing. Too bad, but we'll see ya later Detroiters. Who knows how many people have been shot stabbed and gotten the crap beat out of them in the parking lot outside Harpo's since we were here last. But it seems like the neighborhood's been cleaned up a bit since then. and we're looking forward to coming back next time around. Anyway, so far this tour's been going good. We didn't really get much time off after Ozzfest, but it was nice to have a couple of weeks to breath outside the bus. Now we are rolling through the U.S. with Meshuggah, God Forbid and Mnemic and after that we take a couple of days off and start the Europe tour. That'll be five weeks of clubs with God Forbid and some other band I don't know yet. Funny thing on this tour was playing BB King's in NYC, which is this pretty high class venue that really felt kind of strange -- too clean if you ask me -- but it was nice to be received well by the cool scenesters of NYC, last time they we're a tad bit less appreciative. Smiles all around the house and a good sense of humor too. As far as the rest of the shows, well you know -- we knock out our shit and if you ain't got it into your thick head yet -- we downright dominate! We fucking roll like a god damned steamin killing machine on fire. All do or die. If you don't believe me get your ass down to the show and see if I'm lying." Tour Dates: 10/19 San Antonio, TX [Sanctuary] 10/20 Albuquerque, NM [Sunshine Theatre] 10/21 Denver, CO [Ogden Theatre] 10/23 Seattle, WA [El Corazon] 10/24 Vancouver, BC [Croatian Cultural Centre] 10/25 Portland, OR [Berbati's Pan] 10/27 Sparks, NV [New Oasis] 10/28 Orangevale, CA [The Boardwalk] 10/29 San Francisco [The Pound] 10/30 Los Angeles, CA [Key Club] 10/31 Santa Ana, CA [Galaxy Theatre] 11/01 San Diego, CA [Soma]
