A PERFECT CIRCLE's 'eMOTIVe' Coming 11/02
A PERFECT CIRCLE
09.03.04 (RockAndMetal.com) A PERFECT CIRCLE will be releasing a collection of songs "about war, peace, love and greed," according to the band, entitled "eMOTIVe," on November 2nd, which will purposely coincide with the United States Presidential election. "eMOTIVe" will feature new material from A PERFECT CIRCLE, plus several classic protest songs like John Lennon's 'Imagine,' Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin' On' and 'Let's Have A War' by Fear. The first song to be released from "eMOTIVe" is entitled 'Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums,' an anti-Bush statement of sorts, which is accompanied by a newly-shot animated video, a strong visual statement that's meant to motivate people to question authority, and to also encourage the viewer to vote in the coming election. The music behind 'Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums' is a remix of the song 'Pet' from A PERFECT CIRCLE's "Thirteenth Step album, released earlier this year. On November 16th, A PERFECT CIRCLE will also release a remix album and DVD package entitled "aMOTION," which will feature newly interpreted songs from the band's catalog. Over the past year and a half, A PERFECT CIRCLE has endured several line-up changes, as well as some much-publicized creative tension between guitarist Billy Howerdel and vocalist Maynard James Keenan, who is also the frontman for TOOL.

MACHINE HEAD's Flynn Speaks Of Future Plans
MACHINE HEAD
09.03.04 (BWBK) MACHINE HEAD's Robert Flynn spoke recently with BWBK regarding the band's plans for the near future: "We're doing this tour, then we're doing an Australian and then a European tour. We're probably doing more dates at the beginning of next year here in the States. What my game plan and our vision is, which we're trying to implement here, is we want to do another video, for 'Days Turn Blue To Gray.' We want to do a third video for 'Descend The Shades Of Night.' We're playing the Brixton Academy again in December, and we want to film that for a DVD. And we're also talking about having more of like a fan-filmed version of this 'Burn My Eyes' show, where we just give a bunch of fans in the audience cameras, and they film it, and we get their perspective and have that as a bonus attachment to the DVD, that we have. And the DVD that's going to come out, it will be our first DVD. It's going to be very 'Through The Ashes Of Empires'-centric. It's going to be focused around that visually and sound-wise. It's going to be the live show. You know, have that, and have a lot of the standard fuckin' rock 'n' roll shenanigans, fuckin' stupid beer fuckin' maniacs, beer bongs, and vodka mania." Regarding "Through The Ashes Of Empires," Flynn commented: "We had basically, you know, found out that we were unsigned. In a lot of ways, it just kind of freed up everything. We were open to try everything. We wanted to challenge ourselves as musicians."

OKKERVIL RIVER EP & Full-Length On The Way
OKKERVIL RIVER
09.03.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Indie Folk/Rockers OKKERVIL RIVER will release a new CDEP come November 1st via Jagjaguwar Records entitled "Sleep And Wake-Up Songs." On the new offering, OKKERVIL RIVER and main songwriter Will Sheff took advantage of a break between releasing albums to record five meditative songs that toss little boomerangs across the distance between what is and what could never be. Partly recorded and completely mixed in Bloomington, Indiana with Dan Burton of EARLY DAY MINERS, "Sleep And Wake-Up Songs" features a thematic unity and a serious tone, but the modesty of the EP format also allows OKKERVIL RIVER to pull the songs off with a candid sense of playfulness. In other OKKERVIL RIVER news, next Spring will see a new full-length album from the band entitled "Black Sheep Boy," which they are currently recording in Austin, Texas with Brian Beattie. OKKERVIL RIVER's "Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See" has also just become available for the first time in a limited vinyl LP format. That particular release was issued in 2003, and was the one that prompted Rolling Stone's David Fricke to describe OKKERVIL RIVER as a "gripping cross of drowsy understatement and lightning bolts of anxiety, like Pavement bursting through the middle of REM's 'Country Feedback,'" and that OKKERVIL RIVER's principal songwriter Sheff "understands the medicinal properties of sadness."

USURPER Complete Recording Of 'Cryptobeast'
USURPER
09.03.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Chicago Metal warriors USURPER have completed the recording of their second album for Earache Records, entitled "Cryptobeast." Recorded at Chicago's Rax Trax Studios with producer Neil Kernon (Judas Priest, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse), "Cryptobeast" features the recording debut of new USURPER vocalist Dan "Tyrantor" Lawson, and the return of original drummer Joe "Apocalyptic" Warlord. According to guitarist Rick Scythe, "Back is the drum insanity of 'Threshold Of The Usurper,' and the guitar tone to match. I think the overall impact of the songs will be 'Threshold'-type chaos combined with 'Necronemesis'-type precision. The production sounds like the instrument tones of 'Threshold/Diabolosis' combined with the attack of 'Twilight Dominion.' The cover art is once again being done by Craig 'Wicked Hand' Simpson. Thanks to all of our metal brothers and sisters who have stuck with us through all the years and all the line-up bullshit. We won't let you down!" After 10 years in existence, USURPER have stuck doggedly to their guns, remaining true to all that made the 80's underground scene so great -- taking their cues from the likes of MANOWAR, BOLT THROWER, HELLHAMMER, POSSESSED, VENOM and DESASTER. USURPER are all about more spikes, more leather, and more poser-destruction than any other band. However, this is no lame idol-worshipping exercise. USURPER are the real deal.

TONY JOE WHITE Makes Return On 'Heroines'
TONY JOE WHITE
09.02.04 (RockAndMetal.com) TONY JOE WHITE, best known for his late 60's swamp hit 'Polk Salad Annie,' has put the finishing touches on his first new recording in six years. The album, entitled titled "The Heroines," features several of White's favorite female artists who are the "heroines" to which the title refers: Lucinda Williams, Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris, Jessi Colter, and White's own daughter, Michelle White. "The Heroines" is his first for Sanctuary Records, which will be released by the label on September 28th. For the new album, White wrote three of the 10 songs (not counting the framing solo acoustic instrumentals 'Gabriella' and 'Gabriella's Affair') with his wife Leann, who also took the cover portrait, and he sings the balmy 'Playa Del Carmen Nights' with daughter Michelle. Additionally, all four of the above duet with White on "The Heroines," their presence evidencing his impeccable taste in both quality women and female artists. One by one Williams, Harris, Lynne and old friend Colter intertwine their voices with White's gritty, ultra-laid-back baritone for some captivating down-home dalliances. White first steps aside to permit Lynne to sing the opening verse of 'Can't Go Back Home,' which they wrote together, so that hers is the first voice you hear on the album. His duet with Williams on the smoldering 'Closing In On The Fire' packs such an erotic charge that a spouse any less secure than White's surely would never have permitted its... [full story]

HACRIDE To Make Their Debut Come February
HACRIDE
09.02.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Canadian Nu Thrash Metallers HACRIDE will make their debut on Galy Records in February of 2005 with their "Polar Current Signal" EP. HACRIDE has crafted its signature sound by pairing technique and melody with the aggressive sound of modern day Thrash and ass-kicking grooves rooted in high impact Metalcore. Influenced by bands such as MESHUGGAH, MARTYR and STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, HACRIDE demonstrate all the technical skills of the latter while still being able to maintain their own musical identity. HACRIDE was formed in 2001 by remnants of several other local bands in guitarist Adrien (Dogma), drummer Oliv (Dogma), bass player Ben (Latrodectus), and vocalist Sam (Scarr). HACRIDE's music combines various influences (S.Y.L, Pantera, Death, Meshuggah, Steve Coleman, Mike Patton) and digests them to create their own Thrash-tinted atmospheric and melodic hybrid. In 2002, the band integrated into the "Klonosphere" compilation, along with KLONE, ANTHURUS D'ARCHER, SCARR, and TREPALIUM. After that, HACRIDE launched into the recording of the 3-song "Cyanide Echoes" demo at the end of 2002, which was recorded by Mathieu Metzger and Guillaume Bernard (Anthurus D'Archer, Klone). Following a positive reception of the demo in the metal press, HACRIDE spent most of 2003 opening for groups such as LOUDBLAST, GOJIRA, CARCARIASS, TANTRUM, COMITY, and KLONE.

DOLOREAN's 'Violence In The Snowy Fields' Due
DOLOREAN
09.02.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Less than a year after the release of their Yep Roc Records debut, "Not Exotic," DOLOREAN are slated to re-emerge with "Violence In The Snowy Fields" on October 5th, an album of vividly rendered folk songs that harken back to the raw parlor soul of "Wild Honey"-era BEACH BOYS and the lush Jack Nitzche/Neil Young compositions of BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD. With the increased participation of drummer/backing vocalist Ben Nugent and the Wurlitzer keyboard contributions of THE STANDARD's Jay Clarke,"Violence In The Snowy Fields" is an album that recalls the best of '60s and '70s Folk Rock, while revealing DOLOREAN's Alex James to be one of the today's most skilled young songwriters on the scene. After touring nationally throughout 2003 and 2004 in support of "Not Exotic," James asked for producer/engineer Jeff Saltzman's help again to record "Violence In The Snowy Fields." They tracked the album in different studios around DOLOREAN's home base of Portland, Oregon, the lineup this time including bassist James Adair, pianist Jay Clarke, and Nugent. This time Nugent was no longer just brushing a mellow backbeat, he picked up the pace and added some Levon Helm-inspired "lonely frog" backing vocals to most of the songs. Jay Clarke added vibraphones and organ, writing string charts for two of the tracks, while Emil Amos and Timothy Horner from Portland band GRAILS played electric guitar and violin on several songs as well.

DRACONIAN Begins Work On 'Arcane Rain Fell'
DRACONIAN
09.02.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Gothic/Doom Metal masters DRACONIAN have entered Studio Underground to record the follow-up to last year's "Where Lovers Mourn." The new album, "Arcane Rain Fell," will comprise 9 tracks of dark, atmospheric metal, and will be somewhat of a concept album, relating the tale of the fallen angels. The beginnings of Sweden's DRACONIAN can be traced back to 1994, when Johan Ericson (drums, vocals), Andy Hindenas (guitars) and Jesper Stolpe (bass, vocals) joined forces as KERBEROS. Seven months later, lead vocalist and poet Anders Jacobsson joined the band, which then changed to DRACONIAN. At the time, the band worked diligently on new material that eventually found its way to their first demo, recorded in October of 1995 at Studio Kallgren. New material soon called for another addition to the band in keyboardist Andreas Karlsson. In 1998 and 1999 DRACONIAN headed for the stage. The positive feedback convinced the band that it was time to head into the recording studio. In early August of 1999, the band recorded "The Closed Eye Of Paradise," after which their sound became slower, darker, and doomier. The material that ensued guided DRACONIAN in a different direction. Their 2-track promo "Frozen Features" was made available on the Internet, as well as in CD format. In 2002, "Dark Oceans We Cry" received great reviews - paving the way for DRACONIAN out of the unknown and into the limelight.

THE FACES' Former Members Reunite On Stage
THE FACES
09.01.04 (Reuters) It was just like old days, except for the absence of booze and cigarettes, as Rod Stewart, Ron Wood and Ian McLagan -- all former members of THE FACES -- reunited in a rare on-stage performance during Stewart's concert at the Hollywood Bowl Monday night. Wood, better known these days as a guitarist with THE ROLLING STONES, accompanied Stewart mid-concert on five songs, including THE FACES' biggest hit, 'Stay With Me,' and returned at the finale to sing the band's wistful 1973 ode, 'Ooh La La,' as McLagan played organ. Stewart, 59, described Wood, 57, as "my best mate and younger brother," and the chummy chemistry between the similarly coiffed rabble-rousers of British Rock thrilled the crowd. Since Wood left THE FACES to join THE ROLLING STONES on their 1975 tour, allowing Stewart to focus on his solo career, reunions between the two have been rare. The Bowl show marked their first extensive collaboration since Wood helped out Stewart at an MTV "Unplugged" taping in early 1993. THE FACES, famous for their alcohol-fueled camaraderie and sloppy playing, formed in 1969 when JEFF BECK GROUP alumni Stewart and Wood joined THE SMALL FACES' members McLagan, drummer Kenny Jones and late bassist Ronnie Lane. The band never let work get in the way of having a good time, as Wood summed up THE FACES' career by saying, "That's what we're about is fucking up, baby." They also dusted off Faces covers of '(I Know) I'm Losing You' and 'I'd Rather Go Blind,' featuring a lengthy Wood guitar solo, as well as Stewart's own 'Every Picture Tells A Story' and 'You Wear It Well.'

AGNOSTIC FRONT Signs On With Nuclear Blast
AGNOSTIC FRONT
09.01.04 (RockAndMetal.com) New York Hardcore legends AGNOSTIC FRONT have signed a worldwide recording deal with Nuclear Blast Records. The official release date for the band's next album, "Another Voice" is set for November 22nd in Europe and January 5th for the United States. With Matt Henderson (Madball) on guitars and production by Zeuss and Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed), AGNOSTIC FRONT offer up some of their meanest, nastiest and sheer brutal Hardcore anthems yet with "Another Voice." The enhanced CD will also include a guest appearance by Jasta, captured on video by acclaimed director Dale "Rage" Resteghini (Fear Factory, Hatebreed, God Forbid, Shadows Fall, Candiria) Other special guest vocal appearances on "Another Voice" will include Scott Vogel of TERROR and Karl Buechner of EARTH CRISIS. AGNOSTIC FRONT have long outlived their 80's contemporaries like MINOR THREAT, DEAD KENNEDYS and BLACK FLAG, but the fight's not over. "It's social politics," vocalist Roger Miret says. "The day-to-day reality of waking up, reading the newspaper, and walking around the neighborhood. It's a hard stare on why the world is still one fucked-up place and we tackle the very real shit that's going down; gentrification's running rampant, working wages aren't, and backs are still being stabbed." Found inside AGNOSTIC FRONT now is a darkened maturity - a finely tuned aggression spun on Miret's lengthy partnership with guitarist Vinnie Stigma.

BLONDIE Will Release 'Live By Request' This Fall
BLONDIE
09.01.04 (RockAndMetal.com) BLONDIE, one of America's longest running Punk/Pop bands, is slated to release "Live By Request" on both CD and DVD this Fall. The performance, taped on May 7th of 2004 in New York City for the renowned "Live By Request" television program, includes hits such as 'Heart Of Glass,' 'One Way Or Another' and 'Call Me,' as well as several songs from the group's latest Sanctuary Records studio recording, "The Curse Of Blondie." In addition, the "Live By Request" DVD will include four bonus performances that didn't air on the broadcast. The energy and charisma lead singer Debbie Harry and the rest of BLONDIE put into their live show make it obvious why the band has been around for so long, and why they aren't going away anytime soon. BLONDIE was formed in 1974 by art student/guitarist Chris Stein and ex-folkie, ex-Max's Kansas City waitress and Playboy bunny Harry. Drummer Clem Burke joined in 1975. The band relentlessly played the Big Apple's downtown circuit and from there they grew into a full blown global phenomenon. Thirty years later Blondie is still going strong, dishing out their brand of infectious pop tunes. The New York Post called the recent "The Curse Of Blondie" "pure goodness...one of the ten best albums of 2004." and it's easy to hear why. One listen to "Live By Request," and it's clear why so many artists including SONIC YOUTH, BLUR, NO DOUBT and more have cited BLONDIE as a musical influence.

SOULSCAR Strikes On 'Victim Impact Statement'
SOULSCAR
09.01.04 (RockAndMetal.com) After carving a path through the Metal underground with their self-released "Character Assassination" debut, SOULSCAR are poised to strike back with their sophomore release, "Victim Impact Statement," on October 12th. Combining the melodic catchiness of Modern Death Metal bands such as IN FLAMES and ARCH ENEMY with CARNAL FORGE's high level of intensity, SOULSCAR aim to please on the upcoming album. From humble beginnings in 1997, SOULSCAR quickly developed their slicing hybrid of Thrash, Death and pounding Heavy Metal to a much more savage level. Over the years, demo after demo from the band has returned constant praise, all the while with SOULSCAR constantly evolving toward a completely unique approach to Extreme Melodic Metal. 2002 saw SOULSCAR arrive at a critical point in time, as an injection of new blood in the form of bass player Brent Mackenzie, drummer Igor Cheifot and guitarist Stas Mikheev -- combined with a renewed dedication in vocalist/guitarist Andrew Staehling -- led to the recording of "Character Assassination." On "Victim Impact Statement," SOULSCAR start right back where they left off before, with a quality production and a strong performance all around. "Victim Impact Statement" Track Listing: 1. Unmade 2. Death Anxiety 3. Cast Aside 4. Hell Bitch 5. Without A Shadow 6. Ultimatum 7. Regressor 8. Alive Awake 9. To The Pain 10. Victim Impact Statement

RAY CHARLES' 'Genius Loves Company' Issued
RAY CHARLES
08.31.04 (Reuters) Concord Records released a star-studded duets album by the late RAY CHARLES today. While the project was highly anticipated in its own right, the legendary performer's June 10th death is expected to propel the title to even greater heights. In fact, Concord general manager Gene Rumsey believes that Charles' final album, "Genius Loves Company," could become the label's all-time best-seller. Still, Concord resisted suggestions that it move up the release date to take advantage of the artist's passing. "We wanted to treat this with the utmost respect," Rumsey says. "While we wanted it to be commercially successful, we agreed unanimously that we were not going to exploit anything that happened along the way." So Concord did stick to their original August 31st release date. The label has shipped 1 million units of "Genius Loves Company" -- 700,000 domestically, with the rest going to international territories. "We're spending millions of dollars in marketing and advertising," Rumsey says. "The $300,000 we're doing for television initially is a drop in the bucket compared to what we're going to be doing through the holidays." The project, distributed under Concord's new deal with Universal Music & Video Distribution, comprises duets by Charles and a host of luminaries from a cross-section of musical genres. Concord executive VP/Senior VP of A&R John Burk co-produced the album with Phil Ramone. Burk says the idea of cutting a duet set arose after... [full story]

KORPIKLAANI At Work On A Second Full-Length
KORPIKLAANI
08.31.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Finnish Folk Metallers KORPIKLAANI are currently working on their second full-length album for Napalm Records, entitled "Voice Of Wilderness." A release date is yet to be confirmed, but is expected sometime in late 2004 or early 2005. KORPIKLAANI ("Forest Clan") emerged out of the ashes of SHAMAN, when the band opted to change its name, along with their musical and lyrical expression. The goal was to move away from SHAMAN's trademark use of the Sami language's strong, impulsive folk metal, as heard on "Idja" (1999) and "Shamaniac" (2002), and opt for a stronger and more widely accepted sound. KORPIKLAANI vocalist/guitarist Jonne Jarvela imagined the change of style to be characterized by both a heavier influence of Traditional Finnish Folk melodies, as well as a stronger infusion of metal. Many of the band's songs come directly from the annals of the Finnish Folk archives, which constitutes the major difference between KORPIKLAANI and other Folk Metal bands. Their music is indeed very Finnish, and the band does not fear being labeled "yokels" living in the middle of the forest. 2003's "Spirit Of The Forest" presented an indisputable Folk Metal achievement in that its use of traditional instruments such as the flute, jouhilkko, and accordion invited the listener to dance along, transforming KORPIKLAANI into a unique, and quite catchy, auditory experience.

NAPALM DEATH's 'Leaders Not Followers 2' Due
NAPALM DEATH
08.31.04 (RockAndMetal.com) NAPALM DEATH will be releasing their debut for Century Media, "Leaders Not Followers: Part 2," on October 5th. The follow-up to 1999's 5-track "Leaders Not Followers" EP, "...Part 2" contains 19 full-bodied tracks, covers from bands like ANTI-CIMEX, DISCHARGE, HELLHAMMER, KREATOR, and more. NAPALM DEATH are currently in England finishing up the recording for "Leaders Not Followers: Part 2." Vocalist Barney Greenway recently had this to say: "The studio is called Foel Studios in the town of Foel, North Wales (Porcupine Tree, Ozric Tentacles), and is owned by the original bass player in Hawkwind. We decided to record here because it's pretty isolated out in the countryside, so there are minimal distractions. We feel that good use of studio time is pivotal, and, where as some bands might sit around taking things easy for periods, we really work intensively. In the studio, it's actually better to be slightly stressed and on edge for us because it's a good way to capture that kind of on the edge live vibe, which in turn gives us the extra thrust. Personally, I'm never happy with a verse of vocals if I think that I can squeeze a last drop of rawness out of my voice. Sometimes I probably attack things too much, but intensity is the key for me. I like to think we've done enough trips to the studio now to know what we're doing, yet you can never be entirely prepared for the unexpected where, say, the desk might burst into flames or something."

VISIONS OF ATLANTIS Through Recording Album
VISIONS OF ATLANTIS
08.30.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Austrian Metal band VISIONS OF ATLANTIS have completed the recording of their second studio album, "Cast Away." The results are described by the band as strong, classically arranged Metal with captivating melodies, on which female soprano and clear male vocals intertwine to create a mythical and symphonic experience. Guest appearances by renowned musicians from both LANVALL and EDENBRIDGE also took place. Myths, epic tales and stories of love are the main songwriting focus of VISIONS OF ATLANTIS. The veil of the mysterious fires is their fantasy, and the source of their inspiration. Fascinated by the myth of the lost city of Atlantis, band members Werner Fiedler, Thomas Caser, Christian Stani and Chris Kamper got together in August of 2000 to work on a conceptual project. Later that Summer, vocalist Nicole Bogner joined on, all later to be dubbed VISIONS OF ATLANTIS. With the recording of a three-song demo in December of 2000 and their first concert in support of EDENBRIDGE, the young band soon began working professionally. It didn't take long before VISIONS OF ATLANTIS were offered recording deals by several labels based on the strength of their first demo. Then, in August of 2001, just one year after formation, an international contract was signed with German label TTS Media Music/Black Arrow Productions, who released VISIONS OF ATLANTIS' debut album, "Eternal Endless Infinity," in the Summer of 2002.

PHIL SPECTOR Hires Former John Gotti Attorney
PHIL SPECTOR
08.30.04 (AP) Music producer PHIL SPECTOR has hired a new attorney who used to work for mob boss John Gotti defending him on murder charges after his previous attorney resigned from the case. Leslie Abramson said that she and her co-counsel resigned as Spector's attorneys, but were taken by surprise when new lawyer Bruce Cutler filed a motion to take over the case while Abramson was out of the country. "We were put in an untenable position, and we were forced to resign," Abramson said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "If we wanted to be ethical and competent, we had to resign." She declined to elaborate. Cutler, speaking from New York, said he has known PHIL SPECTOR for a long time, and had signed on as his personal attorney before Abramson and Marcia Morrissey. took over the criminal case. "I was engaged as Phillip's attorney and confidante last January," he said. "Leslie and Marcia were brought on in February, and they quit in July. They just jumped ship, and I had to take control of the ship and bring it into port." Bruce Cutler won three trials for John Gotti before prosecutors were able to get him disqualified from the defense team by playing 1990 tape recordings on which he had conversations with Gotti about other defendants. Gotti died in prison in 2002. Spector, famed for creating Rock 'N' Roll's "Wall Of Sound" recording technique, is charged in the fatal shooting of Lana Clarkson at his California mansion in February of 2003.
