MIDNIGHT MOVIES Debut Album Due Next Week
08.27.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
Los Angeles-based MIDNIGHT MOVIES will see the release of their self-titled debut album this Wednesday, August 31st, on Rykodisc/Emperor Norton Records. MIDNIGHT MOVIES' rich, haunting sound provides a backdrop that's simultaneously endless and claustrophobic in the way that, say, a David Lynch film is inescapably David Lynch. Cinematic in its own right, the music is driving, spacey Art Rock with Psychedelic electronics coupled with eerie melodies sung by drummer and vocalist Gena Olivier, whose voice inhabits space as pervasively as dye inhabits water. The other two members of MIDNIGHT MOVIES are guitarist Larry Schemel and keyboardist/guitarist Jason Hammons. One thing that accounts for the band's distinct sound is their departure from the standard band dynamic. First off, the notion of a singer/drummer is a rarity in and of itself. Also, the band's not so much a product of roles fulfilled, as it is a trio of three creative minds, each a songwriter and each with disparate tastes - playing music none of them could have foreseen prior to forming the group. The end result of their collaboration is an outwardly evolving, organic sound that has never been heard quite in this combination, but is strangely familiar nonetheless. Evoking Los Angeles's vibrant, cryptic landscape, MIDNIGHT MOVIES are, in a sense, an outgrowth of that city, with its dark undercurrent -- or perhaps of any city that takes on a life of...

After the recently released solo albums from both vocalist Joacim Cans and bass player Magnus Rosen, the focus is finally set on Swedish Metal heroes HAMMERFALL to begin recording as a band again. This time, the band has chosen a quiet place in the middle of Denmark for the recordings. Together with producer Charlie Bauernfeind, HAMMERFALL will settle down there come September and October for the recording of their next album. The release of the follow-up to their successful "Crimson Thunder" studio album is planned for the March 7th, 2005, via Nuclear Blast Records. However, the first single from the new album will be issued in January. HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak let on about some of the song titles from the upcoming CD, which will include 'The Templar Flame,' 'Born To Rule' and 'Fury Of The Wild.' "We will certainly outdo all our previous albums and get one step closer to the immortality of Heavy Metal," Dronjak said. After quitting Death Metal band CEREMONIAL OATH in 1993, Dronjak formed HAMMERFALL. With some line-up changes over the years, HAMMERFALL still remains one of today's most successful Swedish Metal bands, with their February 20th, 2003 Goteborg show forever immortalized in "One Crimson Night," which was released as both a CD and DVD soon after that tour had ended. Besides the obvious, the "One Crimson Night" DVD also featured the bonus documentary "On The Road."
[WATCH] MCLUSKY To Release New Single September 6th

(RockAndMetal.com)
As UK Rockers MCLUSKY are currently limbering up for appearances at both the Reading Festival and Leeds Festival this weekend, The band will also release their new single, 'She Will Only Bring You Happiness,' on September 6th. Following that, MCLUSKY will embark on tours of both Europe and America in October and November, before finally returning home for their final tour of the year in November - culminating in a headline show at London ULU. MCLUSKY was formed in 1998 when Andy Falkous (vocals) and Mat Harding (drums) met while working together in Wales. Unlike most bands at the time, they had no aspirations to become a "Britpop" band. The public beyond the Welsh capital first became aware of them when, in 2000, they released their debut album on local label Fuzzbox Records, entitled "My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours." Contained were the singles 'Joy' and 'Rice Is Nice.' From there, they moved to Too Pure Records who wasted no time shipping them off to the U.S. to work with producer Steve Albini. In just one week, MCLUSKY recorded their second album, the excellent "Mclusky Do Dallas," which spawned the songs 'To Hell With Good Intentions,' 'Alan Is A Cowboy Killer' and 'Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues.' 2003 saw two brand new singles in the UK, prior to the release of MCLUSKY's current album, "The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire."

[LISTEN] CLIENT's New Disc Due September 27th Via Mute
08.26.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
"City," the follow-up to CLIENT's self-titled 2003 debut, is due for release September 27th via Mute Recordings, and features collaborations with Pete Doherty and Carl Barat of THE LIBERTINES and Martin Gore of DEPECHE MODE. "City" was co-produced by both CLIENT and Joe Wilson (Sneaker Pimps, Trash Money). CLIENT are an up and coming female Techno Pop/Rock duo who formed on the road in 2002 while supporting DEPECHE MODE in Eastern Europe. CLIENT have toured extensively in the UK and in Europe, as well performing dates in the U.S., Russia and Mexico. With the group members preferring to be known simply as Client A and Client B, CLIENT produce sexy and compelling electronica grounded in strong songwriting foundations. According to CLIENT, the new album is "darker, bleaker and more lush" than their debut. Highlights include the song 'Radio,' which lyrically explores depression and musically recalls JOY DIVISION with its hypnotic and compulsive layers of beats and keyboards, as well as the single 'In It For The Money,' which is CLIENT at their most acerbic and witty. An anthem for doomed youth, 'Down To The Underground,' features a guest vocal performance from Pete Doherty. While 'Pornography' featuring Carl Barat of THE LIBERTINES is a sexy electro classic, Other highlights include the seductive and dark 'Overdrive,' featuring Martin Gore of DEPECHE MODE, and the lush but delicate 'One Day At A Time.'

Canadian Extreme Metal maniacs STRAPPING YOUNG LAD have just entered Armoury Studios in Vancouver to record the follow-up to their 2002 release, "SYL." STRAPPING YOUNG LAD vocalist/guitarist Devin Townsend checks in with the following studio update: "Here's a heads up from the Dev, speaking on behalf of the STRAPPING camp. It seems the more shit you get over and out into the open, the more you realize that the only job we have to do and do well is rock. And not in a 'group hug, lets all hold hands and pray' kind of way, but more to do with the fact that we spend a fuck of a lot of time together, not discussing something as trivial as maybe somebody's stinky feet. And thus, after 7 months of preparation, we have finally started recording what we think of as being a new chapter in the SYL evolution. I personally am discouraged by 'metal' lyrical themes. I relate to anger and anxiety, but I'm not really free-floating in terms of it anymore. After SYL (the album) laid the re-establishing framework coupled with the hectic touring season last year and our kick-ass new DVD, we figured it was time to put it all together. Times are fairly strange. STRAPPING is a forum for a whole bunch of friends and artists to come together and FUCK SHIT UP...with the best sounds, production, tunes, drums, vox, guitars, bass and keys we can possibly do. We don't want to please anybody, but we do want to give people panic attacks and temporary mania."

This year the music world lost an important voice when Paul Atkinson, the original guitarist for the influential '60s Rock band THE ZOMBIES succumbed to a prolonged battle with cancer. A long list of friends, including the surviving band members, will remembers Atkinson next month with a celebrity auction organized by Rhino Records on E-Bay to benefit the Paul Atkinson Family Trust as well as The Gift Of Life Foundation and The United Network For Organ Sharing - both of which promote organ donor awareness. Scheduled to launch September 16th in conjunction with the release of THE ZOMBIES' new album, "A Far As I Can See...," the online auction (http://www.ebay.com/rhino) is expected to run throughout the band's upcoming fall tour with ARTHUR LEE AND LOVE. A small sampling of the items up for bid include: a guitar donated by Rickenbacker and signed by the surviving members of THE ZOMBIES, lithographs of the "Odessey And Oracle" album cover signed by the band members, a gold record for Elton John's "Honky Chateau" signed by long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, a tour poster signed by both John and Taupin, a Beach Boys lithograph autographed by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, a drum head autographed by Ringo Starr, and more. Before Atkinson passed away in April, he fought back fatigue and pain for a reunion concert by THE ZOMBIES at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles.

NANCY SINATRA has collaborated with a series of well-known performers to create her forthcoming self-titled album which pairs the music icon with an eclectic group of artists who admire, or feel they were influenced by, Sinatra's music. The album is slated for worldwide release on September 28th on the Attack label, which is distributed by Sanctuary Records. In the meantime, the first single from Sinatra's upcoming album, 'Let Me Kiss You,' a Morrissey-penned song, is due for issuance on September 14th. The single marks the first joint effort for Sinatra and Morrissey, who are friends and mutual fans. "This song is singularly Morrissey, and I was more than excited to sing it with and for him," says Sinatra. PULP's Jarvis Cocker also contributed two songs to the project and plays with a backing ensemble that includes former SMITHEREENS member Dennis Diken on drums, SONIC YOUTH's Jim O'Rourke on bass and Richard Hawley on guitar. "Both of Jarvis' songs are very Nancy," says Sinatra. "We just had a ball recording them with what was a great band! Hawley, who traveled with Cocker from the UK for the sessions, is an incredibly gifted guitarist." 'Ain't No Easy Way,' a classic song from NANCY SINATRA's extensive catalog, becomes explosive this time around with the addition of Jon Spencer's howling vocals and blues guitar. "I love performing with Jon. His energy is palpable on stage." U2's Bono and The Edge have...

GENERAL SURGERY have inked a new recording deal with Listenable Records, who plan to release the album sometime in late Spring of 2005. It will be the first-ever full-length album by the band, after more than a decade of releasing numerous split CD's and EP's. GENERAL SURGERY released a new split 7" with FILTH on Bones Brigade Records in gut-colored vinyl and a double 7" on Italy's Buio Omega Records earlier this year. Formed by drummer Matti Karki and bass player Grant McWilliams in December of 1988, GENERAL SURGERY derived their name from a graphic medical handbook. After a year and a half of line-up changes and inactivity, Karki gathered a fresh set of band members willing to elevate their special brand of grindcore to unknown heights. The "Erosive Offals" demo tape was soon born. Not wasting any time, the band were on stage a few days after the recording, with the accompanying bands and audience completely blown away by GENERAL SURGERY and their massive five-minute set (which still exists on video), describing it in such appraising words as "complete shit," "by god, that truly sucked," "huh?," "what, you mean that was a band playing?" Despite the general lack of understanding, they felt that greatness was just around the corner. Fourteen years and several members later, GENERAL SURGERY are still pummeling it out as good as any other band in the Grindcore genre.

Authorities in Chicago, IL were considering criminal charges today against THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND and one of its tour bus drivers for allegedly dumping 800 pounds of human waste from a bus into the Chicago River, dousing a tour boat filled with passengers. The announcement came a day after the state sued the band and driver Stefan Wohl, accusing them of violating state water pollution and public nuisance laws. The lawsuit seeks $70,000 in civil penalties. Chicago police said surveillance footage from nearby buildings shows a bus crossing a grated bridge August 8th as the tour boat passed underneath. "Certainly, this is the bus that discharged this fluid," Cmdr. Michael Chasen said. He said Wohl told police he crossed the bridge around the time of the incident, but didn't admit to dumping the waste. More than 100 people on an architecture tour were showered with foul-smelling waste. The attorney general's office said no one was seriously injured. DAVE MATTHEWS BAND members were waiting to see the video surveillance footage and other evidence before making a judgment, group spokesman John Vlautin said. Police were working with the attorney general's office to determine if any charges should be filed. Howard Learner, the executive director of the Chicago-based Environmental Law And Policy Center, said criminal charges could include violations of public nuisance laws and ordinances to protect public health and safety.

[WATCH] JIMMY PAGE Is British Walk Of Fame's First Rocker

JIMMY PAGE has become the first musician to put his hand prints on the new British Walk Of Fame. The former guitarist for THE YARDBIRDS, LED ZEPPELIN, THE FIRM, PLANT/PAGE and more cast his hand prints in cement Monday as the first music-related figure to feature on London's reply to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. "It's a real privilege and a great honor to be the first. I'm really chuffed," said Page, 60. "A Walk of Fame is a fantastic idea, and it's high time we had one in London." The site of the British version, which will feature popular music giants, is now taking shape outside the new Virgin Music superstore on Piccadilly Circus, London's landmark crossroads. Page predicted it would soon become crowded with hand prints. "If you started putting in all the people I think are deserving, you could cover the whole of London," he said. LED ZEPPELIN -- which included vocalist Robert Plant, bass player John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980 -- was one of the top Rock and Metal bands of all time, producing nine chart-topping albums from 1969 to 1979. Probably their most well-known song was the 1971 epic 'Stairway to Heaven,' which was never officially released as a single, but still became one of the most requested radio songs of all time. LED ZEPPELIN was back on top of the U.S. Rock charts last year with "How The West Was Won." JIMMY PAGE is frequently rated as one of the greatest guitarists in Rock and Metal history.

The MOTORHEAD legend roars on in 2004 with the recent unleashing of the band's new studio album "Inferno," on June 22nd. Confirmed U.S. tour dates are now scheduled to promote the Metal-Is Records release. "This album is real musicians playing real music. There were no rules," MOTORHEAD frontman Lemmy says. Lemmy (born "Ian Fraser Kilmister") was a former roadie for Jimi Hendrix, eventually joining Space Rock legends HAWKWIND. Lemmy formed MOTORHEAD in 1975, naming the group after the last song he wrote for HAWKWIND. "We sounded like punk but looked like metal. I always felt we were more punk than metal anyway. I call it rock 'n' roll, but if I had to go down one side or the other I'd say we had more in common with punk than we have in common with heavy metal. We came out at the same time as the punks," Lemmy says. Tour Dates:

[LISTEN] HOTHOUSE FLOWERS Sign On With Eleven Thirty
08.24.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
Dublin, Ireland long-time Folk/Rockers HOTHOUSE FLOWERS have signed a recording deal with Eleven Thirty Records, who will release the band's new album, "Into Your Heart," on October 5th. HOTHOUSE FLOWERS first emerged from the streets of Dublin in 1985 and found their way into the world spotlight with the promise that they would be the next U2. Aside from the obvious Irish roots (and the adamant approval of U2's Bono), that comparison was never quite apt. Instead, HOTHOUSE FLOWERS has existed on their own terms as a band that has always favored traditional music as much as they favor punk and rock music. Those self-made terms have served them well throughout their nearly two-decade long career. "Into Your Heart" (their fifth studio album) displays the group's continued hunger for a solid soul sound via the distinctive vocals of lead singer Laim O Maonlai - the man who Bono once called "the best white soul singer in the world." 'Your Love Goes On,' the first single from "Into Your Heart," debuted as the highest-ranking new single the week of its release in Ireland, with the album itself debuting at #3 and being certified Gold within just 3 weeks. Says HOTHOUSE FLOWERS guitarist Fiachna O'Braonain: "This is the most raw, soulful record we have ever done." The songs on "Into Your Heart" reflect the band's faith in the power of love and one another, and express that faith through raw, unrestrained emotion.

Six months after the release of the majestic milestone "Mabool - The Story Of The Three Sons Of Seven" via Century Media Records, Israel's leading Metal outfit ORPHANED LAND are about to offer their first-ever video clip for the song 'Ocean Land.' Vocalist Kobi Farhi comments: "Hello everyone and Shalom from the Orphaned Land of Israel! Finally after many years we filmed a video clip, to the song 'Ocean Land' from our latest album "Mabool." It's our first video clip ever! It was a very hard day of working and we were on the set for 18 hours, where we filmed at two different locations: 1. In the sea (where we bumped into hundred of Medusa jellyfish! It was very tough and we remained brave, but got wounded). 2. Underwater shots in a swimming pool - I had to sing for hours under the water, I drank so much pool water, yuck! We also filmed Matti playing a guitar solo under the water. We were working with a very famous theatre actress named Hila Vidor. She was unbelievable - it was an inspiring adventure to work with her. If you ask me, she is the Queen of the sea! I think that 'Ocean Land' is a great video, and it's about time that you will all be able to watch it and judge for yourself very soon." On Thursday, August 26th, ORPHANED LAND are also slated to perform at the Metalist Festival in Tel Aviv, Israel. "It will be a tribute show and a decade celebration for our debut release, 'Sahara,'" Farhi said.

German Melodic Metal band EVIDENCE ONE are currently putting the finishing touches on the final mix for the band's upcoming new album, "Tattooed Heart," scheduled for a November 15th European release via Nuclear Blast Records. "In comparison to 'Criticize The Truth,' we have gotten a lot more harder without losing the fans of the Hard Rock elements out of sight. Fans of the first both albums will get their money's worth, as well as the metalheads. But Evidence One are in the year 2004 a Melodic Metal band. Above all, the Saxon tour and the shows at the Earthshaker and the Wacken Open Air have influenced us a lot! In one word, the album will be 'fantastic,'" says EVIDENCE ONE vocalist Carsten Schulz. The story of EVIDENCE ONE starts in early 2001, when DOMAIN vocalist Carsten "Lizard" Schulz and AOR Heaven boss Georg Siegl hook up at a KANSAS show in Munich. When Siegl told Schulz of his plans to release a solo album by FRONTLINE mastermind Robby Boebel, Schulz - a long-time FRONTLINE fan - gets to hear the first couple instrumental demo songs. To make a long story short, in late November, Boebel and Schulz start writing material for this solo album. The collaboration becomes amazingly productive: At their first meeting they write their first two tracks, recording all the guitar and vocal parts in two days. Both soon realized that this was more than just a solo project, forming EVIDENCE ONE as a result.

Arctic Music Group has confirmed September 21st as the U.S. release date for the upcoming live album, "Conquering South America," from Extreme Metallers MALEVOLENT CREATION. It was over ten years ago that the Metal world first lay witness to the now genre-shaping "The Ten Commandments" by then little-known MALEVOLENT CREATION. Eight albums later, the group have sold hundreds of thousands of records across their catalog, toured consistantly round the world and with each and every move, kept their dedication and musical quality in tact. They are a fitting champion for the extreme music fan. The hour-plus "Conquering South America" was recorded during the band's 2001 tour of Brazil, engineered by Jean-Francois Dagenais (Kataklysm, Misery Index). Album tracks include 'Eve Of The Apocalypse,' 'Multiple Stab Wounds,' 'Manic Demise,' 'Blood Brothers,' 'Kill Zone,' 'Rebirth Of Terror,' 'Slaughter Of Innocence' and more. Arctic Music Group was formed by Scott Hecker along with MALEVOLENT CREATION guitarist Phil Fasciana in June of 2000. The label has released nearly 20 albums since, including additional titles from MALEVOLENT CREATION, HATEPLOW and KULT OV AZAZEL, among others. The label recently released the debut from New England-based CODEBLACK, and also issued new recordings from both STEREOCHRIST and TOTAL DEVASTATION earlier this year.
