SAM ROBERTS Release Is Slated For Lost Highway
SAM ROBERTS
08.20.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Canadian Alternative Pop/Rock sensation SAM ROBERTS' album "We Were Born In A Flame" will be released in North America on August 31st via Lost Highway Records. Roberts may call Montreal home, but his music occupies a less definable space: the place between studious intellect and gut reaction; between psychedelic transcendence and the cold, hard truth; between fist-pumped, hockey-lovin' hellraising and melancholic vulnerability. Or, in SAM ROBERTS' universe, it's the place where Rue St-Laurent intersects with Abbey Road. "This record is not the product of the last year of my life, it's a product of the last 28 years of my life." To understand SAM ROBERTS, you have to backtrack to the day he picked up his first stringed instrument: a violin, when he was 4 years old. "I actually kept taking lessons into my 20s, and I'm glad I did," he says, "because the discipline that it takes to play violin drove me to rock 'n' roll. The first time I picked up a guitar I was like, 'Holy shit, I can actually play this in front of people,' whereas with the violin I was shitting myself every single time I picked it up." Like many kids, SAM ROBERTS experienced his Rock 'N' Roll epiphany in the place all dreams are made: the bedroom. "My friend lent me this amp," Roberts recalls. "It had camouflage fabric and a big metal grate in the front and it said 'Ride The Lightning' on top. "I plugged in this old electric guitar, and it made the nastiest..." [full story]

JERK Announce Australian Dates Prior To Recording
JERK
08.20.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Following a sneak attack warm-up date in Canberra recently, Australian Industrial Metallers JERK have announced the first of a run of return live dates in their home country beginning next month in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, which will see them working the live circuit until they enter the studios again in early 2005 to record their second album. JERK drummer/programmer Lamar Lowder, guitarist Charles Cilia, new vocalist Mario Spate and bassist Leeno Dee say they all look forward to playing live again, following seven months spent writing, demoing and honing the new band line-up to a diamond hard edge. JERK released their potent debut album, "When Pure Is Defiled," in April of 2003. Produced by Lowder (Chainsuck, Engines Of Aggression) along with Sean Bevan (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Guns N' Roses), "When Pure Is Defiled" receiving rave reviews from Australian critics upon its release. JERK's debut single, 'I Hate People Like That,' topped Triple J's "National Net 50" chart four weeks in a row at one time. The album also featured the single 'Just What You Need,' which launched at #1 its first week out. "We started this band four years ago in October," says Dee. "We always wanted to create an entity, not a fucking band. Not four dudes who play music, but an entity - a THING that can walk on its own and does all the talking for us. We've set it up in such a way that you can't ignore us. Resistance is futile."

THE MAVERICKS' 'Live In Austin' Due In September
THE MAVERICKS
08.20.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Fans of Alt-Country/Rockers THE MAVERICKS will have the chance to re-experience a live concert by the band on September 28th, when Sanctuary Records will issue the group's "Live In Austin" release in both CD and HD Concert DVD formats. Recorded on June 2nd, 2004 on the legendary Stubbs' Barbecue stage in Austin, Texas, the 16-song showcase by THE MAVERICKS features stunning renditions of some of the band's most well-known songs, along with an eclectic mix of group and fan favorites. Over two hours in length, the "Live In Austin" DVD features the night's concert in it's entirety, plus interviews with each band member and behind-the-scenes footage from the show. The live CD has been edited to include selected songs from the evening's show, and has a running time of 70 minutes. The show was recorded live to 48 tracks of 24-bit PCM audio using the RADAR hard disk recording system. All of the hallmarks of a live show by THE MAVERICKS -- horns and tequila, Spanish and English, pure unadulterated diversity, and the band's trademark fusion of Latin, Rockabilly and Soul, are captured on "Live In Austin," illustrating why THE MAVERICKS's live shows have been garnering universally positive reviews worldwide for over a decade now. Tightly performed and extremely diverse, the set for the evening of music was based on THE MAVERICKS' members' personal choices, rather than out of the desire to produce a "greatest hits"-themed show.

DIECAST Make A Return In October With 'Blue Skies'
DIECAST
08.20.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Boston-based Metalcore quintet DIECAST will return with their new album, "Tearing Down Your Blue Skies," on October 19th via Century Media, who will also release the new offering in Europe on October 25th. "Tearing Down Your Blue Skies" is DIECAST's first album since their debut full-length, "Day of Reckoning," released over three years ago on Now Or Never Records. The new offering shows the group's progression as musicians and songwriters, while the addition of new vocalist Paul Stoddard adds a whole new feel to the band's dynamic sound. From SLAYER-type riffs mixed with HATEBREED-like breakdowns to KILLWITCH ENGAGE-influenced melodies and massive hooks, DIECAST have broken the mold by forging themselves into a mind-blowing Metal, Hardcore and Modern Rock hybrid beast. DIECAST bass player Jeremy Wooden further describes the band's evolution: "I guess the first thing to say is that we're back and better than ever. We have spent almost two years on this material, making sure that every song was as strong and interesting as the next. Our new singer has allowed us to try things that we could never have imagined in the past. We tried to make each song have a different feel and have written some of our heaviest material, and also some of our most melodic." What also sets DIECAST apart is their unabashed intensity and ability to deliver their material effectively through their live performances.

MARILLION's 'Marbles' Will See U.S. Release In Fall
MARILLION
08.19.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Twenty-one years after the release of their first album, "Script For A Jester's Tear," MARILLION are preparing for the release of their 13th studio album, "Marbles," in the United States in the Fall via Dead Ringer Records. Set for issuance on October 5th, "Marbles" is packed full of atmospheric and stirring songs. Intense, deep-seated and musically rewarding, the new MARILLION album has already seen a pan-European release via the band's own label, Intact Records. The album's single, 'You're Gone,' initially charted at position #7 in the UK (the week's second highest entry) and at position #8 in Holland, earning the band a slot on Top Of The Pops. MARILLION have a unique relationship with their fans. In 1997, the group's fans learned via an email newsletter at the time that -- due to lack of record company support -- the band could not afford to fund a U.S. tour. One of MARILLION's fans then facilitated a whip-round fundraiser for the band that topped $60,000 - enabling the tour to take place. Since that time, MARILLION has adopted a completely new approach to the way their albums have been funded. Their twelfth album, "Anoraknophobia," hit the headlines in 2001 when more than 12,000 fans pre-ordered and paid for it - a record twelve months before it was released. A similar campaign was launched to fund "Marbles," with 13,000 fans ordering the album in advance.

BLOOD RED THRONE Begins New 'Altered Genesis'
BLOOD RED THRONE
08.19.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Norwegian Death Metallers BLOOD RED THRONE have finally started work on their new album, "Altered Genesis," after a series of drummers failed to deliver the quality the band were looking for. With original drummer Espen Antonsen fired early on in the original recording, the band had to endure two more failed attempts to get the recording off the ground before finally finding the guy for the job in the form of Bernt A Moen. Guitarist Tchort comments on the stop/start nature of the project thus far; "After a turbulent, and in many ways a classic BRT episode, the recording process is now heading forward again. With one drummer put out of 'his misery' and several others biting the dust, the band laid down the drum tracks with the help of Bernt A Moen and are now halfway through recording the guitar tracks. We had set a high standard for this album, and anyone who couldn't meet that standard, would simply have to go. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't clean and it certainly wasn't going to be about lowering the quality of performance - it was the fucking BRT curse striking again!!" BLOOD RED THRONE are looking to complete "Altered Genesis" in readiness for an early 2005 release date. Since forming in 1998, BLOOD RED THRONE have unleashed a series of gruesomely precise Death Metal releases - most recently last year's "Affiliated With The Suffering," which has seen the band grow steadily in popularity and notoriety.

FRANZ FERDINAND Fined For Fruit In New Zealand
FRANZ FERDINAND
08.19.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Proving that they're way more dangerous than your average Pop/Rock band, FRANZ FERDINAND lead singer Alex Kapranos has revealed that they were busted going through customs on their way into New Zealand with an orange. The offending piece of fruit was evidently hidden at the bottom of one of the band member's suitcases, but New Zealand authorities nonetheless took the incident very seriously, and fined the band $200. Kapranos explained: "They're very particular about taking any kind of foodstuffs across the borders and things, they were going crazy and the X-Ray machines were flashing and going nuts, and we thought, 'Oh my god they've found the stash of cocaine!' But it wasn't, it was the orange. They didn't give a damn about the hard drugs, it was the fact that we were smuggling and orange into the country. No citrus fruits!" Orange smuggling aside, it seems FRANZ FERDINAND are still reeling at how their whirlwind five-date Australian tour was received. "The whole thing's been pretty euphoric! We're basically on the other side of the planet here, and people are still totally going for it. The audience reactions have been the most fantastic thing. It was out of control mayhem, totally heaving. Now that we've been there, we can't wait to come back and spend some more time. At this stage, it's looking likely that will be in January. It would be so great to come down and play the Big Day Out."

CARNAL FORGE Vocalist Kjellgren Splits With Guitar
CARNAL FORGE
08.19.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Unrelenting Swedish Thrash gods CARNAL FORGE have suddenly (but amicably) parted ways with long-time vocalist Jonas Kjellgren after seven years and five albums. CARNAL FORGE further explains his unexpected departure: "The news of Jonas dropping out from the band came just a few days ago, so we have focused on getting someone to replace him instead of writing explanations to everyone. Because of the up coming European tour with PRO-PAIN, it's been really hectic for us trying to find a new vocalist, but finally we can announce that Jens C. Mortensen (Slapdash, Revolver) will be the new vocalist. Jens has rehearsed with us once thus far, but it sounded great as hell. Now he has at least 12 new songs to learn before the tour. We hope that our fans will enjoy Jens' vocals as much as we already do. We wish Jonas the all the best in the future and thank you for all the great times we had together." Kjellgren further explains his departure: "I quit the band because I want to focus on my guitar playing and my studio. However, it has been seven years of pure joy. I have only good memories from those years. When I was asked to join the band in 1997, I thought I was going to play the guitar, but no I was handed a microphone. At the first rehearsal they played "Sweetbride" and "The Otherside" and oh man, I was totally blown away, they were so damn fast and tight. I knew I wanted to be in this band even if I didn't play guitar!"

BEATLES Trove Of Rare Material Is Reportedly 'Lost'
THE BEATLES
08.18.04 (AP) It sounded too good to be true. Turns out it probably was. A long-sought trove of rare BEATLES material that reportedly was found last month by a lucky British tourist remains lost, a leading BEATLES expert says. Last month, The Times newspaper reported that a suitcase bought by Fraser Claughton, 41, at an Australian flea market for about $35 was packed with BEATLES memorabilia, including photos, concert programs and unreleased recordings. But Pete Nash, a memorabilia expert from the British Beatles Fan Club who examined the contents of the suitcase on behalf of a British television channel, said he saw photocopied ticket stubs, laser-scanned pictures from the 1990s - and no rare reel-to-reel recordings. "It's farcical, really," Nash told The Associated Press. Neither The Times nor the reporter who wrote the original story wished to comment Wednesday. Claughton does not have a listed telephone number, and could not be reached for comment. John Read, a friend and pop memorablia dealer who has spoken for him on the issue, did not return calls. The story of Claughton's alleged discovery was picked up by media outlets around the world, including the AP. The Times reported that among the contents of the suitcase was a reel-to-reel tape that included John Lennon and Paul McCartney experimenting with alternative versions of previously unrecorded tracks. The newspaper quoted an expert with Christie's... [full story]

WIZARD At Work On Songs For Follow-Up To 'Odin'
WIZARD
08.18.04 (RockAndMetal.com) German Power Metallers WIZARD are currently working on the songs for the follow-up to their 2003 "Odin" concept album, and will reportedly begin with pre-production soon. According to the band, the lyrics will be "Wizard style" Metal again, just as their loong-time fans expect them to be. The recording of the still untitled album is planned to take place in January/February of 2005, with a tentative release date set for sometime in May. WIZARD formed in Bocholt way back in 1989 and never looked back. The band released their "Legion Of Doom" demo in 1991, followed by two self-produced albums, "Son Of Darkness" (1995) and "Battle Of Metal" (1997). After 10 years of hard work, WIZARD finally secured their first official record deal in 1999 with B.O. Records, who released the band's "Bound By Metal" album that same year, which catapulted WIZARD straight from the underground to being one of the elite bands in German Power Metal. Songs like 'Hammer, Bow, Axe And Sword,' 'Bound By Metal,' or 'Dark Wings' still belong to the standard repertoire of any decent Metal DJ. In 2000, the band signed a long-term recording deal with Limb Music Products, who released "Head Of The Deceiver" in 2001 (so far the most successful album in WIZARD's history), followed by last year's MANOWAR-like "Odin," which sported epic, powerful melodies and music in tracks such as 'The Prophecy,' 'Dead Hope' and 'Dark God.'

TRIVIUM
08.18.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Roadrunner Records recording artists TRIVIUM reported from the road recently, following last weekend's Road Rage show in Florida amidst the chaos of Hurricane Charley: "Hello everyone. We first want to extend our sympathies and best wishes to those who have been negatively impacted by Hurricane Charley. THE TEA PARTY Release New 'Seven Circles' Today
THE TEA PARTY
08.17.04 (RockAndMetal.com) After nearly 15 years of playing a seminal role as one of Canada's favorite Rock bands, it doesn't seem like THE TEA PARTY - Jeff Martin (guitar/vocals), Stuart Chatwood (bass/keyboards) and Jeff Burrows (drums), will be running out of fresh new material any time soon. THE TEA PARTY's new album, "Seven Circles," hit stores today, and -- true to form -- they deliver. Over the years, THE TEA PARTY have gained a solid, dedicated fan base in Canada, selling in excess of 1 million units. "Seven Circles," the ninth release from THE TEA PARTY, enumerates the lives of the band members both emotionally and musically since 2001's "The Interzone Mantras." Produced by Juno Award winner Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Three Days Grace), Jeff Martin and Bob Rock (Metallica), and mixed by Randy Staub (Metallica, Nickelback), "Seven Circles" finds THE TEA PARTY extending their ever-innovative sound with a musical immediacy that's poignant, spiritual, and utterly sonic. A dramatically powerful album, "Seven Circles" also features the band at their captivating, uncompromising best. The new video for the song 'Writing's On The Wall' is no exception. A high-energy explosion of eye candy with mind-bending surrealism and pop art colours that suggest a meeting of Peter Max and Andy Warhol aboard "The Yellow Submarine," the clip was co-directed by band member Chatwood along with Stephen Scott.

YOB Signs Recording Deal With Metal Blade Records
YOB
08.17.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Hailing from the ever-gray skies of Eugene, Oregon, Doom Metal band YOB have signed a new recording deal with Metal Blade Records. YOB are prepared to release a new album, "The Illusion Of Motion," through Metal Blade on October 19th. "We are very excited about our new record, 'The Illusion Of Motion,'" says YOB vocalist/guitarist and founding member Mike Scheidt. "It has the extremes that our fans expect of YOB, only more. Our slow riffs are much slower and crushing and our faster tunes are more jagged and chaotic. Our melodic parts are more atmospheric and our discordant riffs are angular and throttling. 'The Illusion Of Motion' has YOB's shortest tune ever, clocking in a just over 6 minutes, and our longest tune, too - clocking in at over 26 minutes. And the vocal extremes that are displayed on our earlier records are even more over the top this time. Plus, this is our first recording with current drummer extraordinaire Travis Foster, who has been crushing skulls with us for almost two years now. It is by far our best record yet in songwriting as well as production, and we are very happy to release it with Metal Blade Records," said Scheidt. Expect YOB to play a number of shows on the west coast throughout the rest of 2004, which will include a west coast tour that will take the band down to San Francisco to play at The Days Of Darkness festival on Friday, September 3rd. After that, YOB will embark on a full U.S. tour in Spring of 2005.

HEAVEN & EARTH
08.16.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Melodic Rockers HEAVEN & EARTH are currently in the studio with producer Dave Jenkins recording their third album, "Screaming For Redemption," which will be released on their own Black Star Records label later this year. Featuring guitarist Stuart Smith, vocalist Paul Shortino and drummer Richie Onori, HEAVEN & EARTH took a break from recording last month to play to a crowd of more than 40,000 people at The Warner Center in Woodland Hills, CA on July 4th. The band was later joined on stage that day by friends Howard Leese (Heart/Paul Rodgers) and Kelly Hansen (Hurricane) for the finale. To commemorate that performance, HEAVEN & EARTH have released the limited edition EP, "A Taste Of Heaven." Featuring 4 new songs with vocalist Shortino and 4 songs from the first CD with vocal performances by Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) and Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), "A Taste Of Heaven" is available from www.stuartsmith.com. MORS PRINCIPIUM EST Begin Next CD In November
MORS PRINCIPUM EST
08.16.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Finnish Metallers MORS PRINCIPIUM EST's new album will be entitled "The Unborn," and is scheduled be recorded at Tico-Tico Studios in Finland during November, with mastering slated to take place at Finnvox Studios in December. Cover art for "The Unborn" is currently being designed by Mattias Noren. MORS PRINCIPIUM EST recently gave a little insight into the new material being put tohether for the new release: "In comparison to 'Inhumanity,' the new album will take a step towards heavier and somewhat darker atmosphere still containing the overall melodic grasp of the music presented. The album is full of diversity, and the songs have a slightly more modern approach as in the form of sampling and the use of computer programming among Mikko's traditional drumwork. As for the rhythm and solo parts, twin guitars will have the main role and the keyboard continues to color the background without being introduced as a solo instrument on this album either. Ville's growling has developed nicely since 'Inhumanity' and some serious voice control will be heard, also some clean vocals are used but the weight is kept on Ville's throat. Overall, the album shall be a solid example of the fact that the melodic death metal scene is still pretty far from it's possible expiration date." MORS PRINCIPIUM EST recorded their first demo in 2000, followed by the release of their debut, "Inhumanity," in the Spring of 2003.

APRIL ETHEREAL's '2004 A.E.' EP Nears Completion
APRIL ETHEREAL
08.16.04 (RockAndMetal.com) The recording of the instrumental tracks for APRIL ETHEREAL's new EP, entitled "2004 A.E.," has now been completed. The EP will feature 3 brand new tracks, with the band recording one track as a bonus, which will be available exclusively through April Ethereal Headquarters (aehq.com). APRIL ETHEREAL will record the vocal tracks for "2004 A.E." over the next 3 weeks, and then Marcin Prusiewicz (Green Studios), the man who gave "Al Azif" it's distinct sound, will mix and master the whole EP. The drum tracks were recorded at the Warsaw's Kokszoman & Zlota Skala Studios, with the guitar and bass tracks recorded in APRIL ETHEREAL's own home studio. The musical contents of the EP may be a little surprising for all those who know the band's previous releases, as "2004 A.E." will be APRIL ETHEREAL's first album featuring only female and male clean vocals, with the music itself also changing somewhat in style. APRIL ETHEREAL are also scheduled to play a live gig at Warsaw's Progresja club with JESUS CHRYSLER SUICIDE and one more unconfirmed act on October 16th. APRIL ETHEREAL backed THE GATHERING in Poland last Summer on their "Souvenirs" tour prior to self-releasing "Al Azif," taking care of its promotion independently after unsuccessful negotiations with several recording labels to do so. May of 2004 brought changes to the APRIL ETHEREAL line-up, as the band parted ways with vocalist Adrian due to personal and musical differences.
