TRAVERS & APPICE Join For 'It Takes A Lot Of Balls'
08.13.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
Whenever rock icons like guitarist/vocalist Pat Travers and drummer Carmine Appice work together, enlisting the support of bassist T.M. Stevens into the bargain, the result is bound to be a technically accomplished project oozing sheer energy and power. The upcoming album by TRAVERS & APPICE, "It Takes A Lot Of Balls," scheduled for release October 4th via SPV Records, looks like it'll live up to its promising title by the sound of things so far. Powerful Blues/Rock with gritty guitar riffs, driving drum sounds and intricate bass grooves mark the album's 13 tracks, be it the compelling opener 'Better From A Distance,' the ripping 'I Don't Care,' the Southern Rock vibe of 'Can't Escape The Fire,' or the sober sounds of 'Hey You.' Pat Travers proves to be not only an expert when it comes to dynamic power chords and fast solos, he also sprinkles in fantastic slide parts and demonstrates with 'Stand Up' that he knows his Funk/Rock. "The recordings were cut in one go, the album was written almost exclusively at the studio," Carmine Appice enthuses. "We'd planned one or two tracks, but the material seemed to almost write itself." "I've been a fan of Pat's for a long time. This collaboration was definitely worth waiting for all those years." Pat Travers has been one of America's more renowned Blues/Rock guitarists for close to thirty years now. His 1977 album, "Makin' Magic," is considered a milestone of the genre, his early shows (frequently...

Australian Power Metallers BLACK MAJESTY will begin recording their second album with acclaimed producer Piet Sielck (vocalist/guitarist from IRON SAVIOR) in the Fall. The band will commence recording the still-untitled album in November at K.A.R.O. Studios in Germany. Piet Sielck's past production duties have involved several veteran Metal bands including GAMMA RAY, BLIND GUARDIAN, GRAVE DIGGER and SAXON. BLACK MAJESTY have spent the last 6 months in pre-production, aiming for a mid-2005 release via Limb Music Products. Classic IRON MAIDEN, QUEENSRYCHE and JAG PANZER are names that easily come to mind when listening to BLACK MAJESTY. The band was established in 2001, and in the Summer of that year the "Sands Of Time" three song promo sampler was circulated throughout the underground and metal media to begin the band's charge forward. The song 'Fall Of The Reich' was hand-picked by well-known German magazine Rock Hard to be included on the "Unerhort" compilation CD, being chosen over thousands of other competing songs. The last band to make such an impact on its introduction was HAMMERFALL in 1997. To the delight of many newly won BLACK MAJESTY fans, the song 'Guardian' (also from the 'Sands Of Time' three song promo) was chosen to be included on Heavy, Oder Was!? magazine's "Metal Crusade" compilation, after which Limb Music signed BLACK MAJESTY to a recording deal.

Extreme Epic Metallers STORMLORD are currently shooting a video for the brand new song 'Under The Boards (195 M.A.),' taken from the band's "The Gorgon Cult" album slated to be unleashed on Scarlet Records in September or early October. After the success of the zombie theme in STORMLORD's 'I Am Legend' video, the band got back together with director Brigida Costa to discuss doing a second video for 'Under The Boards (195 M.A.).' The storyline for the new video features a psychotic medical serial killer who come out at night to stalk his victims and then trap them in his clinic of horror. This time around, however, the upcoming video will be much similar to a short movie than to a normal music video, so prepare for the airing of the 'Under The Boards (195 M.A.)' video in early September. As usual, the cast will include David Bracci from the Sergio Stivaletti team (Dario Argento and more) for the special effects, but also Giuseppe Oppedisano ("The English Patient," "Cari Fottutissimi Amici," "Demonium," etc.) starring as the insane psycho killer. In early 2003, the 'I Am Legend' video was unleashed, and quickly became one of STORMLORD's biggest hits - thrilling both disciples of the band's sound, along with die-hard fanatics of the splatter horror movie genre. STORMLORD soon began to write songs for "The Gorgon Cult," which was recorded once again at The Outer Sound studios with producer Giuseppe Orlando.
[WATCH] THE PIXIES Are Back For More After A 12-Year Hiatus
08.12.04
(AP)
THE PIXIES, one of the forging pioneers of Alternative Rock in the 1990s, are back after a 12-year hiatus and riding a whole new wave of success. But according to lead singer Charles Thompson, they'll be doing one thing differently this time around - they won't be rushing to find a recording label. "Record companies, schmecord companies," Thompson said. "Who needs 'em?" Reflecting the changes in an industry trying to keep pace with fast-evolving technologies and the fickle tastes of the fans, THE PIXIES' much-awaited reunion is taking place not in a studio but at small live houses and multiband extravaganzas from Winnipeg, Canada to Ljubljana, Slovenia. And instead of working up new material, they are focusing on selling tickets, T-shirts and CDs mass-produced on site at the venues. "The record business is really bad right now," Thompson, a.k.a. "Black Francis," said in an interview after performing recently at the Fuji Rock Festival. "That's not where the money is. The business is with the real customers, the fans. They're the ones who say, 'OK, we'll come and see you perform. That's who we're trying to connect with." So far, THE PIXIES seem to be connecting pretty well. Their first 13 reunion shows this past Spring sold out quickly and their 18-country tour of the United Kingdom and Europe was well received by the fans and critics. On September 4th, the four-member band -- Thompson, bassist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey...

UK Modern Metallers THE MORE I SEE are slated to release their debut album, "The Wolves Are Hungry," on September 27th via SPV Records. Inspired by a great number of years spent peddling their musical wares in a variety of Metal, Hardcore and Punk outfits to people all over the planet, THE MORE I SEE formed in Peterborough, England at the beginning of 2002. Hell-bent on creating music with power, energy and fierce intelligence, founding members Gizz Butt (lead guitar/vocals) and Gavin King (rhythm guitar) took great care to recruit a team of like-minded missionaries who shared their passion, technical ability and desire to make brave new music. Enter bassist Lee Churchill, frontman Chad and drummer Alex Cummins; the final pieces in a jigsaw that's now primed and ready to unleash its first full-length creation. First came the 5-track debut EP, "Don't Look Now I'm Living," which emerged on German underground label Modern Noise in 2003, garnering a series of favorable reviews by the European press. Combined with a burgeoning reputation for scintillating live performances, THE MORE I SEE were snapped up by SPV, home to MONSTER MAGNET, MOTORHEAD, ICED EARTH, SEPULTURA and many more. From the breakneck clatter of 'Violate' to the ominous 'A Price On Your Head,' THE MORE I SEE play emotionally penetrating heavy music. "The Wolves Are Hungry" was recorded in France and produced by Andy Sneap.

Scottish trio THE BLUE NILE will be releasing their new album, "High," on Sanctuary Records come August 31st. The band's first new studio effort since 1996's "Peace At Last" and their fourth in 21 years, THE BLUE NILE's impassioned music and expressive vocals have won them a large word-of-mouth fanbase over the years that includes Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Rickie Lee Jones (with whom they toured with in 1991) and Rod Stewart. The band's songs have also been covered by a diverse array of artists including Tom Jones, Isaac Hayes, Julian Lennon and Joe Cocker, as well as Lennox. The three Glasgow natives of THE BLUE NILE, singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Buchanan, bassist Robert Bell and keyboardist Paul Joseph Moore, released their debut, "A Walk Across The Rooftops," in the U.S. in 1984 to favorable reviews. Producer Steve Lillywhite pronounced it "the best debut of the last five years." "Hats," which reached #12 in the UK Top 20, was released in 1989, and the band embarked on its first 30 tour dates across Britain, Ireland and America. THE BLUE NILE's rare live performances have likewise drawn some well-deserved praise from the critics. The band's third record, "Peace At Last," was released in June of 1996 and placed in the U.K. Top 20. On "High," THE BLUE NILE continue to create songs about day-to-day lives of ordinary people, and sprinkle each song with something special that lifts it out of the ordinary.

PURE INC. have signed on with German label AFM Records, who plan to release the band's upcoming new self-titled album on September 13th. The roots of PURE INC. go all the way back to 1994, with the band first building its reputation with live gigs and two demo CD's ("Young Hearts On Fire" and "Beyond The Light"), before the self-produced "Genius" brought PURE INC. national success in Switzerland in 2001, with the title track becoming a radio and video hit. After also winning a well-known Swiss contest for best newcoming band, it was much easier for PURE INC. to secure decent live gigs, with the band supporting acts including SAVATAGE, GOTTHARD, SHAKRA and SUCH A SURGE as a local opening act. PURE INC. are rude and melancholic, yet harken back to the good old days of 80s metal boasting both melody and power. However, "Pure Inc." boasts a completely modern and fat-sounding production handled by Tommy Vetterli (ex-Coroner), who was also responsible for the album's final mixdown. After the release of the upcoming album by AFM in September, PURE INC. will commence a European tour in support of MSG (The Michael Schenker Group) beginning six weeks later on October 27th at Zeche in Bochum, Germany - moving through venues in The Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Sweden before finishing up a few weeks later at Tavastia in Helsinki, Finland on November 14th.
[LISTEN] TODD RUNDGREN Issues 'Utopia: Live In Boston' DVD
08.11.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
TODD RUNDGREN has just released "Utopia: Live In Boston 1982," the second DVD from his successful archival series that was launched in association with Sanctuary Records two years ago. Culled from Rundgren's personal library of footage he amassed during his nearly 40 year career, the DVD not only includes a 90-minute concert which has been remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, but also an additional 90 minutes of completely new interview footage with all four UTOPIA band members. "Utopia: Live In Boston 1982" was taped during the band's concert to promote their album, "Utopia." Songs from "Utopia" were rarely performed after that tour, which should make this concert footage highly coveted among Todd Rundgren fans. Although 'Hammer In My Heart' and 'Princess Of The Universe' became staples of later tours, many of the other fine songs were performed infrequently, if at all, after 1982. Rarities from the "Utopia: Live In Boston 1982" DVD include, 'Libertine,' 'I'm Looking At You,' 'Say Yeah,' and 'Infrared & Ultraviolet.' TODD RUNDGREN, a prodigiously talented singer, songwriter and producer started his career as a musician in 1967 when he formed THE NAZZ, who released the prototypical Psychedelic Rock hit 'Open My Eyes.' Rundgren recorded three albums with THE NAZZ before disbanding the group. After two self-defining solo albums in both 1970 and 1971 (the first of which spawned 'We Gotta Get You A Woman,' the original version of that song issued previously under the RUNT moniker as...

[LISTEN] HOT HOT HEAT Check In With New Recording Update

(RockAndMetal.com)
HOT HOT HEAT vocalist/keyboard player Steve Bays checked in recently with the following recording update: "Hey everyone! We flew into LA about six weeks ago and checked into this bizarre reality TV-style place monopolized by child stars and Blind Date candidates. We immediately started pre-production with Dave Sardy at Cole Studios, where we rehearsed and refined the 15 songs that made the cut from our 25 demos. After a couple of intense weeks, we chose the final twelve songs. Then, we started tracking the drums at Sound City, and we played along with Paul while he recorded all his parts. We had a guy known as the 'Drum Doctor' working on the drum sound with us who was incredible... he gave us 'The Terminator' (the snare he also used there for Nirvana's 'Nevermind') for a few songs. Last week Dustin recorded his bass parts at Larrabee Studios, where we'll be for the next few weeks. Dante and I will start the guitar and vocals this week along with the piano, organ and additional percussion, which will take us up to the end of August. Now that we've laid the foundation of the album, we're beginning to hear how it's going to sound, and it's really cool to hear the efforts of the last six months finally come into fruition. It's starting to feel like it's going to be a way bigger leap from 'Make Up the Breakdown' than we had anticipated. The new record will either be out by the end of November, or January (at the latest). See you soon." - Steve

MUDVAYNE guitarist Greg Tribbett has announced a decision to give Ibanez electric guitars his exclusive endorsement. "Actually, I played Ibanez guitars from the very beginning," stated Tribbett. "My first teacher played Ibanez. They're slick, dead-on guitars and they play faster. You can set them up for really low string action, which is important to me. And the sound is perfect." At this time, Tribbett switches among the radically shaped Ibanez "Iceman," the classic Ibanez "Artist" model, and an Ibanez "SZ," one of the newest Ibanez guitar designs. There has been discussion of an online promotion by Ibanez and MUDVAYNE management where the band's fans will be given a chance to decide which guitar Tribbett ends up using, either on tour or in the next video. Rob Nishida, manager of Ibanez Artist Relations in North Hollywood, California, had this to say: "We are very excited to have Greg Tribbett playing Ibanez. I've been impressed with Greg from the very first time I saw him play with Mudvayne at the San Bernardino stop on the "Tattoo The Earth" tour in 2000. Mudvayne was one of the best live performing bands I had ever seen. The group is one of the most important heavy bands today and Greg's creative guitar playing is an integral part of the band's sound." Tribbett has also been considering exploring somewhat different sounds than those usually associated MUDVAYNE, another reason for his Ibanez endorsement.

We spoke with long-time bass player Raven from KILLING JOKE recently regarding the band's upcoming 25th Anniversary, which includes plans to re-release most of KILLING JOKE's earlier albums in remixed and remastered form via EMI Records over the next two years. Raven commented: "As next year is our 25th anniversary, what a bunch of punk rock grandads we have become! But having said that, we are still hard at it in Killing Joke these days, and are about to embark on the writing process for the next album. We have tons of shit going on starting this year as a precursor to the new album. The first eight albums are being remixed and remastered for release by EMI over the next 24 months, and we have also re-activated our own Malicious Damage record label." KILLING JOKE have also just released the incredible "Chaos For Breakfast" 5-CD box set, which includes classic early material and rare demos. Each "Chaos For Breakfast" CD is printed to look like original vinyl in the original picture sleeve - all including original artwork, inserts and stickers. Purchase "Chaos For Breakfast" directly right here. In other KJ news, Raven commented on producing the band HEADCOUNT, whose "Die Monkey Die" album is now available. Raven also said he and KILLING JOKE frontman Jaz Coleman have completed a new spoken word album, "Gems Of Power," which comes out in the Fall, as well as a new CD from Raven's own band, SMARTYR.

Quebec Experimental Metallers UNEXPECT have begun work on their debut album for The End Records, with whom they signed a recording deal back in May. UNEXPECT incorporate many musical ingredients which correspond to the human shifting mood. Mixing elements of Black, Death, Hardcore and Melodic Metal with Classical, Opera, Medieval, Electro, Ambient, Psychotic Noise and Circus Music with a Progressive edge and an occasional Jazzy touch, UNEXPECT is composed of 7 members - the atmosphere sometimes taking a form of symphonic proportions in its diversity of sound and complex arrangements. UNEXPECT's vocal performances range from one extreme to the other, as they alternate between glorious choirs, inhuman screams of deep, high, mid-growl and delirious intensity, theatrical narrations and clean/sober sections strewn with bewitching feminine singing pleasures. Since their origin in 1997, UNEXPECT released the debut full-length album "Utopia" in 1999, critically acclaimed in many countries throughout the world helped by no distribution whatsoever, with the internet as it's only support. A new era began for UNEXPECT with the release of a vastly improved surreal opus, ''We, Invaders,'' in November of 2003. That EP, released via Galy Records in North America, caused a sizeable stir among the critics - a proper introduction to the new UNEXPECT album currently in progress.

Oregon's KADDISFLY have signed a recording deal with Hopeless/Sub City Records. The band are currently tucked-away in their hometown of Portland, writing for their debut release on Hopeless. KADDISFLY are slated to record in L.A. with producer Enoch Jensen in early October, with the album
targeted to hit the streets in early 2005. From a linear perspective, the concept of KADDISFLY have traversed an enormous distance since their conception in a rural Eugene shanty at the turn of the new millennium. With the release of their 2001 EP "Honorable Mention, 2002's "Humania EP, and their challengingly thematic 2003 opus, "Did You Know People Can Fly," KADDISFLY, through incessant touring, broken hearts, financial collapse, and occasional emotional ruin has built an impenetrable underground reputation for emotional substance and creative mutation. Avoiding the music industry's postmodern confines of prepackaged labels and transparent boxes, KADDISFLY have attempted to replace image with substance, novelty with focus, limitation with inspiration, and eyes with ears. Pulling together every lesson and mistake of the first three years, the independently produced and distributed "Did you Know People Can Fly" would offer a brief snapshot of things to come - a sleek tapestry of sonic wallpaper for anyone with an open ear or mind, the sharply focused effort promises to offer the versatile, fearlessly thematic, and eclectic characterization of sound that is uniquely KADDISFLY.

Firstly, our live Japanese tour 2003 DVD, 'Under The Rising Sun' is currently being pressed and should be available in Australia this week. [LISTEN] ELVIS PRESLEY Scottish Roots Unlikely, Says Historian
08.09.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
It was going to happen soon or later: MacElvis. The Tartan Bandwagon has rolled into town and it wants "The King Of Rock 'N' Roll" to jump on board. Scottish author Allan Morrison recently claimed that ELVIS PRESLEY's ancestry could be traced back to an Aberdeenshire blacksmith called Andrew Presley. Morrison stated that he was born around 1720 of Andrew and Elspeth (Leg), that Andrew junior relocated to Paisley and then across the Atlantic to become the first Presley in America (1745). This story was catapulted across the world and featured in BBC and CNN news reports. Alex Salmond (MP for Buchan and Banff) even tabled a motion in the House of Commons welcoming the news. A Presley Of Lonmay tartan has also been created in celebration. There are even rumours of a tour of the parish being planned for our American cousins. But what of the proof? Most genealogists agree that ELVIS PRESLEY's lineage can be traced back to an Andrew Presley residing in the Carolinas, circa 1750. The ancestry of that Andrew Presley is where the differing theories arise. Some believe he hailed from the Germanic Preslar family, while others suggest ancestry in the Presley Hills and the Parish of St. Elvis in Wales. As much as I would love to promote the Scottish connection I think the Lonmay claim is perhaps the most unsubstantiated of them all. For starters, there is no entry for an Andrew Presley (circa 1720) in the parish registers for Lonmay...

THE CHASM have finally completed mixing and mastering their new album, "The Spell Of Retribution," whuch is scheduled for a November release date via Wicked World Records. Comprising 10 tracks with a running time of over 66 minutes, "The Spell of Retribution" represents THE CHASM's most adventurous and ambitious project to date, firmly setting them apart from the rest by incorporating purposely lengthy songs dealing with intricate concepts close to the heart of frontman Daniel Corchado. Recorded at Soto Sound Studios in Illinois and then mixed by Corchado at Lux Inframundis, the album's recording was not without its problems - including at one point a studio fire that set the schedule back. Commenting on the completion of THE CHASM's latest opus, Corchado says: "We are definitely very proud to announce the completion of this new chapter, the 7th, in The Chasm's odyssey, after almost 3 months of hard work in the studio and a schedule full of delays and problems, 'The Spell of Retribution' has reached the end of it's creative/constructive journey. Armed with a thick, darkened/heavy production, interwoven with what surely is our most complex and destructive material, 'The Spell...' is for sure a lengthy and memorable piece of Darkened Heavy Metal. 'The Spell...' is a devastating experience, one full of unexpected turns and atmospheres of controlled chaos, and the intense feeling of revenge and inner victory."
[FREE MP3] CARLOS SANTANA Gathers Songs For New Studio CD
08.09.04
(Reuters)
CARLOS SANTANA has begun collecting songs for his next studio album. "Right now we're collecting songs. It's like (the 1999 album) 'Supernatural.' What we did was we crafted songs like glass slippers, and then we find the Cinderellas." As with his past few albums, the songs will precede the collaborations with other artists. "We're in the finding songs part," Santana said. "I'm just supremely grateful (to everyone) from Lauryn Hill to Dave Matthews to Placido Domingo. Most people only work with one level and stay there. Where 'I only do salsa, I only do norteno,' and they stay there. I only play music. Period. And that gives me a different spectrum that others don't enjoy." Asked when the new album will be finished, Santana replied, "When it's done." As for the all-Spanish-language album Santana was mulling a few years back, the project has been shelved for now. "I would like to work with so many people," he said. "One of my favorite bands is still Molotov. And of course Mana, Los Jaguares. And there are a lot of people (from Latin America) that we don't even know. But it's not in the agenda now. I think I would need to establish a different agenda with Spanish radio, Univision and Telemundo." CARLOS SANTANA will be honored August 30th as the 2004 Latin Recording Academy Person Of The Year via performances by BLACK EYED PEAS, OZOMATLI MATCHBOX TWENTY's Rob Thomas, and others at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
