EVERCLEAR Showcase Their Hits On 'Ten Years Gone'
08.06.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
Capitol Records has set a confirmed release date of "Ten Years Gone - The Best Of Everclear 1994-2004," a brand new "Greatest Hits" collection from EVERCLEAR, for September 28th. The 21-track retrospective, which includes all the band's classic hits, plus several movie soundtrack contributions and two previously unreleased songs, is driven by the powerful songwriting of EVERCLEAR vocalist/guitarist Art Alexakis. The band has been among the most popular and critically acclaimed Rock bands of the past decade, achieving worldwide album sales of over 10 million. Fueled by the smash single 'Santa Monica' the Portland, Oregon-based trio's 1995 debut, "Sparkle And Fade" was a huge hit, with sales exceeding one million. EVERCLEAR's 1997 follow-up, "So Much For The Afterglow" was a modern rock sensation, spawning two major hits - the #1 radio track, 'I Will Buy You A New Life,' and 'Father Of Mine' - on its way to achieving double Platinum status. In 2000, EVERCLEAR released the pop-inflected "Songs From An American Movie, Volume 1: Learning How To Smile," followed later that year by the harder-edged companion volume, "Songs From An American Movie, Volume 2: Good Time For A Bad Attitude." EVERCLEAR's most recent release, last year's "Slow Motion Daydream," was acclaimed by many as the band's most diverse, ambitious body of work thus far.

It appears MEGADETH are back to their old-school, non-nonsense ways on their upcoming new album, "The System Has Failed," set for a confirmed release September 14th on Sanctuary Records. However, it wasn't very long ago in early 2002 that MEGADETH mastermind Dave Mustaine suffered a debilitating nerve injury to his arm (literally after sleeping on it the wrong way), bringing his career -- and the nearly 20-year history of MEGADETH -- to a grinding halt. His prospects for playing guitar again uncertain, Mustaine retreated into seclusion, effectively ending the band and leaving behind a ten-album legacy as one of metal's most important, innovative, and intelligent acts. But the story did not end there, and it seemed undeniable that the long, colorful, and dynamic history of such a relentless and groundbreaking act could be curtailed so abruptly. Now in 2004, "The System Has Failed," the tenth studio album released under the MEGADETH moniker, is set for release in about six weeks. The forthcoming first single, 'Die Dead Enough,' features a stalking rhythm and urgent riff alongside an infectious chorus and a taste of strings, adding texture and depth. Look for MEGADETH to tour this Fall with returning drummer Nick Menza in support of the new album and their recently re-issued catalog of platinum and gold albums (released last Tuesday on Capitol Records), which has been impressively remixed, remastered...

[LISTEN] THE MUSIC's 'Welcome To The North' Expected 10/19
08.06.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
THE MUSIC's second full-length release, "Welcome To The North," will see a North American release on October 19th via EMI Records. "Welcome To The North" quantifies the experiences and personal growth in the lives of the members of THE MUSIC over the past two years, and, true to form, the band invested little planning into the initial stages of the new record, preferring to believe that what came out of the studio naturally, and spontaneously would be the best reflection of them as a band. Decamping to Atlanta, Georgia early this Spring, THE MUSIC spent seven weeks working with Brendan O'Brien (Soundgarden, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam) at Southern Tracks Studios. The belief in themselves and their instincts appears to have paid off, with adept refinement and maturation of their distinctive meld of dance-inspired grooves and Psych Rock riffs toward a new focus of song crafting and powerful lyricism. The 11 tracks on "Welcome To The North" clearly convey the bands musical evolution. It's now been two years since THE MUSIC's debut effort established them as one of the UK's brightest new exports. The band members were barely 18 years old when their self-titled album rocketed into the UK album chart at #4 in September of 2002, as their musical appeal rocked across North America in 2003. THE MUSIC then went on to tour the globe, acquiring Gold record status in the UK, Japan and Australia along the way.

After eight months of writing, Power Metallers MASTERPLAN are ready to record their second album for Germany's AFM Records (with distribution in Japan and Southeast Asia by Marquee)."We are really happy and proud of the new material," says MASTERPLAN frontman Jorn Lande. The new album will contain about 11 songs, with all band members credited as co-creators this time around. Songwriting for the still untitled release took place in Hamburg, Aachen, Los Angeles, Slovakia and Norway. Roy Z. also helped MASTERPLAN as a good friend, inspirer and arranger. Once again, Andy Sneap and MASTERPLAN are producing the new album together at Crazy Cat Studios in Hamburg, with mixing planned for Finnvox Studios in Helsinki by Mikko Karmila and mastering by Mika Jussila. Lead by Lande, who made a name for worldwide himself with both ARK and JORN, MASTERPLAN also features guitarist Roland Grapow and drummer Ulli Kusch, who were with legendary German Metallers HELLOWEEN until the Fall of 2001. Bass player Jan S. Eckert used to be with Hamburg's IRON SAVIOR, while keyboarist Axel Mackenrott came to join up with MASTERPLAN after being a member of several cover bands. MASTERPLAN's debut yielded songs like 'Spirit Never Die,' 'Kind Hearted Light,' 'Crystal Night' and 'When Love Comes Close,' which all have a classical thread running through them, combining modern rhythms, intricate guitars and melodic vocals.
[LISTEN] THE BETA BAND Announce Split After 8 Years Together
08.05.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
After eight years of creating consistently innovative music, releasing three critically acclaimed albums and staging several much-heralded live shows, THE BETA BAND have decided to call it a day. Always regarded as something of an enigma by the media, but widely recognized to be one of the UK's most influential bands, this year's "Heroes To Zeros" album proved not only their most successful but most cohesive and engaging album to date. THE BETA BAND made an immediate impact with their debut release and the resulting compilation, "The Three EPs." With a no-formula approach to making music, a shared interest in film and art and a desire to push the envelope in terms of their music and live performance, the group continued to puzzle and delight with the release of their debut album, an album which -- despite the band's own misgivings -- was hailed widely by critics everywhere. THE BETA BAND's experimentation with new sounds continued with the release of their second album, the electronic flavoured "Hot Shots II,' which again met with widespread critical acclaim. Says member Richard Greentree: "The Beta Band apple has over-ripened and become riddled with maggots. It must fall from the tree and let it's seeds return to ground. Sincere thanks to everyone who has helped us along the way." All four band members will continue to work in music and the arts.

Candlelight Records has announced the worldwide signing of New Orleans Sludge Metal monsters CROWBAR. The band's addition further strengthens the label's already formidable roster, including 1349, ZYKLON, KHOLD and the home to EMPEROR and the early OPETH catalog. "Life's Blood For The Downtrodden," CROWBAR's label debut for Candlelight, is slated to see a February 8th, 2005 release in North America. Final studio work on the album produced by the working team of Warren Riker (Down) and Rex Brown (Pantera), is planned in Miami, Florida from August 14th-September 1st. Upon completion it will be the band's first studio album in over three years. As undisputed heavyweight champions of the New Orleans Sludge sound, CROWBAR have remained a true force in aggressive underground music for over a decade. Even with an ambitious and genre-defining musical legacy in their wake, CROWBAR continue to evolve while remaining the sonic definition of "heavy." Vocalist/guitarist Kirk Windstein's wrecking ball of charged emotion remained as crushing as ever while guitarist Sammy Duet, drummer Tony Costanza and bassist Jeff "Okie" Okoneski trawled the infinite depths of the soul with seasoned expertise on the band's last studio album (their sixth full-length), entitled "Sonic Excess In It's Purest Form." That album title was a more-than-fitting description for the band itself, and in light of the...

(RockAndMetal.com)
It's been almost twenty years since GLASS TIGER first topped the charts, and the band are celebrating that landmark with the upcoming release of their 20th Anniversary CD and DVD, "No Turning Back: Glass Tiger 1985-2005." Available in stores on August 24th the new album is a brand new collection of GLASS TIGER's colorful past. Featuring all of the radio versions of their biggest hits along with some rarities and alternative versions, "No Turning Back: Glass Tiger 1985-2005" also includes two brand new songs recorded especially for the new release, 'No Turning Back' and 'Give It Away.' The DVD features 13 of GLASS TIGER's video performances and tons of bonus footage. Both formats offer a chance to re-experience some of the 80s' most memorable Pop/Rock songs, beginning with 'Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)' and 'Someday' from the band's debut release, "The Thin Red Line," which set a record for being the fastest selling debut recording in Canadian history, going gold within weeks of its release in 1985. The subsequent album "Diamond Sun" achieved Double Platinum status, while "Simple Mission" went Platinum. Along the way, GLASS TIGER collected five Juno Awards, and a Grammy nomination followed, as the band shared the stage with some of the biggest acts of the past 20 years. A national tour to support the new album is in the works, initial plans expecting to see the band on the road from September through next February.

BLISSED have released their debut album, "Waking Up The Dead," via independent label KR Records. Not to be confused with drummer Robert Sweet's prior career with famed Christian Metal band STRYPER, BLISSED play just straight forward Metal with no religious themes or overtones. According to Sweet: "It's been quite a while since I've felt this good about a group effort musically, and this feels great. If you weren't into STRYPER you'll like this, and if you were into STRYPER, you'll like it all the more. For the record, I'm extremely into what is heavy now, and this is heavy. Blissed are a different version of what I do, as we are worded differently than Stryper was. We are a Metal band that happens to have members that are Christian." BLISSED have also just returned from the band's first tour overseas, which met with much success. BLISSED played to audiences in Europe with explosive live performances, as the recent trek included stops at various venues in Belgium and France, then on into the UK for more dates in England and Scotland. After two more shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the band finished up the first-time tour at the infamous Garage in London. The promoter for those concerts was so impressed by the healthy turnout of bodies that he booked BLISSED to do another concert in the Netherlands playing to an audience of 4,000, headlining a concert line-up of five bands.
[LISTEN] EVANESCENCE Achieve Six Times Platinum Down Under
08.04.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
After over a year of chart-bashing, EVANESCENCE have achieved a massive milestone in Australia with their debut album, "Fallen," hitting six times Platinum this week. EVANESCENCE's amazing success with "Fallen" stands unparalleled in Australia in recent times for an International Hard Rock group's debut offering. The album has so far spawned four massive hit singles in 'Going Under,' 'Bring Me To Life,' 'My Immortal' and 'Everybody's Fool,' and has stayed on the national charts Top 20 down under for an amazing 63 weeks since its release. Currently on tour with fellow labelmates SEETHER in the U.S., EVANESCENCE are set to release a new live CD/DVD later in the year. Fans can also expect a new studio album in the not-too-distant future. Lead singer Amy Lee said: "Just because there's still singles coming off from the last album doesn't mean we're not working on this new one at the same time. It's just kind of buying us time, I guess, more than anything. And we're taking our time and I'm having fun writing. It's my favorite part. "It still sounds like me, but I've been in a spooky mood lately, so I think it's gonna be kinda spooky," she said. "I'd like to use more organ. I wanna make it heavier and softer at the same time. I want to go in a lot of different directions we didn't go on 'Fallen.' I want to get different emotions across." Lee the new tracks will be also darker, pointing to fresh inspiration by the recent vampire movie, "Van Helsing."

[LISTEN] ELVIN BISHOP's Daughter's Killer May Be Put To Death
08.04.04
(AP)
A Martinez, California jury recommended the death penalty Tuesday for a man who killed the daughter of Blues guitarist ELVIN BISHOP and an elderly couple as part of a quasi-religious extortion plot four years ago. The jury also recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for Justin Helzer for his role in the deaths of another couple. Many in the jury of 10 women and two men held hands in the jury box and cried as a clerk polled them about their decisions after the three-month trial. Helzer stared straight ahead and appeared unmoved. Last month, Helzer interrupted opening statements of the penalty phase of his trial, saying, "I want this life to be over. ... I want to die." Prosecutors described Helzer, 32, as a cold-blooded and arrogant killer who deserved death. Helzer, his older brother Glenn and a friend, Dawn Godman, killed five people during the crime spree in the Summer of 2000. The killings of Selina Bishop, her mother, Jennifer Villarin, her mother's boyfriend, James Gamble, and Ivan and Annette Stineman, were part of an extortion scheme to earn money for a self-awareness group the Helzers said would hasten Christ's return to Earth. The bodies of Bishop and the Stinemans were sawed up and stuffed into gym bags, their jaws removed to prevent identification, and the bags were thrown into a river. "Justice was done," Olga Land, Villarin's sister, said outside court.

Roadrunner Records has announced the signing of Finland's NIGHTWISH to a new recording deal. NIGHTWISH combine elements of Metal, Goth and Classical orchestration in a manner as majestic as it is unique. The band will begin a new U.S. and Canadian tour come August 16th, in support of Roadrunner's release of their new "Once" album later this year in thise territories, along with Australia and New Zealand. Humbly begun in 1997, NIGHTWISH found balance when they opted to replace their prominently acoustic sounds with electric guitars. Armed with a fresh new identity, NIGHTWISH was quickly signed to Finland's premier label, Spinefarm Records. Their debut, "Angels Fall First," made a huge impression upon the scene thanks to its unique hybrid of sounds and styles, with much of the focus centering on the operatic and enigmatic singing of front woman Tarja Turunen. The initial offering was soon followed by the even more progressive and adventurous "Oceanborn," which stayed in the Finnish pop charts for over 30 weeks. At one point, NIGHTWISH had three singles in the Top 10 at the time. That success led to packed shows in Finland, and soon to continental European shows. In 2000, the band released their third effort, "Wishmaster," immediately going platinum at home. 2003's "End Of All Hope" saw NIGHTWISH make their first U.S. appearance headlining the sold-out 2003 ProgPower Fest.
[FREE MP3] BLACKFIELD Album Will See U.S. Release Thru Snapper

Snapper Music has confirmed September 14th as the U.S. release date for the self-titled debut album from BLACKFIELD. Featuring musician/producer Steven Wilson from NO-MAN/PORCUPINE TREE and Israeli singer/songwriter Aviv Geffen, "Blackfield"'s stateside release will follow an already-growing buzz over the band's European release, which is set for August 23rd. A near two-year creative endeavor, "Blackfield" was recorded at various studios in both London and Tel Aviv, with final tracking at London's Abbey Road studios in October of 2003. Featuring haunting material written both collaboratively and separately, the album brings together a unique ensemble of music, culture and exceptional talent. An incredible video for the album's title single was filmed on location in London and Copenhagen, and was directed by Lasse Hoile, long-time designer for PORCUPINE TREE who also takes credit for BLACKFIELD's haunting artwork. Drawn together by a mutual love for classic rock albums of the '60s and '70s, Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen have long admired each other's collective works. In 2000, Geffen invited Wilson to perform alongside him for several concerts in Israel. They met again shortly thereafter in London and before long began collaboration on the very first BLACKFIELD song. Steven Wilson, a multi-instrumentalist who taught himself both guitar and...

Earache Records has announced the signing of UK band MISTRESS to a worldwide recording deal. Having festered and thrived in the midst of the grimy UK Grind/Hardcore scene during the last few years, MISTRESS have contaminated all who they have come in contact with via a heady mixture of alcoholic inebriation, bluntly opinionated confrontation and basic feral violence. Formed in Birmingham in 1999, MISTRESS have released two full-length albums to date ("Mistress" and "The Chronovisor"), and have gigged with the likes of NAPALM DEATH, MAYHEM, ELECTRIC WIZARD, BOLT THROWER and EXTREME NOISE TERROR. MISTRESS' hard-to-pin-down sound comes across as a gut-wrenching Sludge/Grind/Doom hybrid, reminsicent of the early UK grind scene of the late 80's and early 90's, and has been described as "a vile musical bastard ... a bilious, screaming, snot-faced sludge orphan with all the taste and decorum of a sexual encounter in Wormwood Scrubbs." The band's refreshingly gritty approach to extreme sounds brought them to attention of Earache, whose label manager Dan Tobin commented: "Mistress represent a lot of what the extreme music scene is lacking these days. Hunger, depravity, filth, honesty, grim reality, pain, suffering and a sick appreciation for the bizarre. After breathing in the stench, we became intoxicated by their vile aura."

ALTER BRIDGE are set to hit the road this September for their first-ever tour in support of the band's forthcoming debut album, "One Day Remains," slated to be released August 10th in North America via Wind-Up Records. Guitarist Mark Tremonti says he's ready to "earn every fan all over again," just like he and fellow members Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall once did with CREED. Along with new lead vocalist Myles Kennedy (formerly of THE MAYFIELD FOUR), the line-up now known as ALTER BRIDGE will begin their Fall trek with a 20-date schedule in the U.S. "We are definitely not going to start out touring arenas," Tremonti said. "We're going to concentrate on playing some smaller venues, like House Of Blues at first, and really start over from the grass roots. We mostly just want to go out there and start to earn every fan all over again." The band members are also adamant that ALTER BRIDGE are much more than just a "Creed - Version 2." Produced by Ben Grosse (Filter, Fuel, Sevendust), "One Day Remains" finds the band creating an edgier, '70s-influenced sound, with elements of Modern Rock, Soul, and Metal making for for a more diverse mix than CREED conveyed, thus crossing a lot more boundaries. Most of all, ALTER BRIDGE are feeling pumped up, reinvigorated and inspired by the anticipation of starting over again.

Italy's ADDICTION CREW have shot a video for the song 'What About,' taken from the band's forthcoming debut album set to be released on September 20th. The video was shot by Italian director Paolo Doppieri, and reflects the concept of human thoughts during a heated argument, showing the physical consequences on the surrounding areas. During the 3 days of shooting at Lake Garda in Venice, there were plenty of explosions and water effects around the band and the actors. ADDICTION CREW guitarist Alex Guadagnoli commented on the video: "I first thought we would be shooting in chroma key and then replace the green limbo with a background plate and special fx interaction, as is often done, but when I felt the impact of a real explosion even though it was 15 meters away, it was damn thrilling! It's been awesome to work with Paolo Doppieri and his production team. As soon as we read his storyboard we loved it and thank Earache for having agreed with it one hundred percent. I think it really fits with our tune. Anyway we can't wait to see the video finished and present it to the world, I hope they'll enjoy it along with our record." ADDICTION CREW vocalist Marta continued: "It was worth waking up at 4:30 in the morning, driving hundreds of kilometers in a couple of days and standing the stifling heat (it was the hottest week of 2004)."
[WATCH] PLOT TO BLOW UP THE EIFFEL TOWER Sign New Deal
08.02.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
Revelation Records has announced the signing of San Diego Experimental Punkers THE PLOT TO BLOW UP THE EIFFEL TOWER. The band are already in the studio with San Diego legend Rafter Roberts (Black Heart Procession, Kill Me Tomorrow, The Album Leaf) recording their next full-length album, "Love In The Fascist Brothel." The guitars buck hard, shudder, and then smack head-on into the drums. Then comes a slippery squiggle of sax that wails and pulls WWII-era Chicago bop jazz into the dirty streets of San Diego, California, circa 2004. The singer grabs the mic and yells, bug-eyed, "I'm choking on the sweet taste of honey!" A tiny punk club on a college campus. Red walls, vegan cookies, and 'zine-racks near the back. Four sweaty kids on stage, and an erupting crowd of hundreds at their feet, scaling the stage, dancing around them, leaping off their amps, screaming into the mic, arms wrapped around the singer, fans becoming the band, filling the stage until you can't tell who's who. The lines of artist/audience distinction blur and suddenly you are THE PLOT TO BLOW UP THE EIFFEL TOWER, and you, and you, and all your friends, too. THE PLOT TO BLOW UP THE EIFFEL TOWER got together in 2001 to play a sinewy meld of punk and wild jazz, but has since left both genres to become something all its own. Like THE CONTORTIONS before them, THE...

Iceland's SIGUR ROS are currently in the studio working on a new album, slated to be released in early 2005. SIGUR ROS ("Victory Rose") are a critically acclaimed band best known as a favorite of RADIOHEAD, having supported them on the "Kid A" tour. SIGUR ROS' most recent release was the 20-minute instrumental EP, "Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do," issued this past Spring. In the band's 10 year history, SIGUR ROS have been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and won a "Best Video" award at the 2003 MTV European Music Awards in Edinburgh last November for their 'Untitled 1' video. Put simply, SIGUR ROS make incredible, atmospheric and totally unique sounds with lead singer/guitarist Jonsi Birgisson possessing a very unique voice - a falsetto that sits somewhere between RADIOHEAD's Thom Yorke and a choir boy. Birgisson also often uses a cello bow to play his guitar, resulting in an effects-laden, atmospheric, totally unique sound. SIGUR ROS have released three studio albums since their formation in 1994, plus one remix album. Their first album, "Von" ("Hope"), is the most experimental of all, being very ambient in sound. SIGUR ROS really found their feet with their second album, "Agaetis Byrjun" ("A Good Beginning") in 2000, first released in North America via MCA Records, who also issued the band's third album in October of 2002, entitled simply "( )."

Once again produced at Mastersound Studios under the guiding hand of Alexander Krull (Atrocity), "Dark Clouds In A Perfect Sky" is the worthy follow-up to last year's "God's Silence, Devil's Tempation." ELIS began their musical career under the name ERBEN DER SCHOPFUNG. Featuring the attractive Sabine Dunser on lead vocals, ERBEN DER SCHOPFUNG released their debut album, Twilight," which yielded their first single, 'Elis.' The band's music oscillates from clear vocal lines to sharp guitar attacks, while a melange of classical and electronic elements compliment the band's Gothic Metal concoction, adding a distinctive feature to ELIS' songs. Live, the band has appeared at the Wave Gotik Festival in Leipzig (among others), has held on to favorable positioning on the DAC Charts, and has remained well represented in the scene's press. Germany's Orkus Magazine, featured ERBEN DER SCHOPFUNG as a top newcomer act in 2001, later confirmed by the publication's readership, who extended the honor by choosing the band as their "Newcomer Of 2001."
