DELAYS' 'Faded Seaside Glamour' Debut Coming May 18th
04.23.04
(RockAndMetal.com)
DELAYS' debut album "Faded Seaside Glamour" is slated for release on May 18th via Rough Trade America. Band members Greg Gilbert (vocals/guitar), Aaron Gilbert (keyboards), Colin Fox (bass) and Rowly (drums) all hail from Southampton, UK. The official line on DELAYS is "The Hollies meets The Cocteau Twins", which is a reasonably neat way of referencing their confection of airy, tumbling melody, late-1960's harmony pop, and singer Greg Gilbert's voice. If one characteristic defines DELAYS' debut album -- recorded in intricate and lengthy sessions at Rockfield Studios -- it's delicious, duvet-wrapped melancholy and sun burnt devastation. It's as fresh as THE THRILLS and as old as THE HOLLIES. It's taken in everyone from BIG STAR to THE LA'S to GENEVA to THE STONE ROSES in between, and DELAYS tap into their sepia-soaked, moist-eyed heritage like a kick-ass "Wonder Years." The lush Happy Mondays-like groove of 'On,' the giddy pop of 'Hey Girl,' the gargantuan romantic whoosh of 'Wanderlust.' This is an album mournful of its...

When Sweden's HEARSE released their 2003 debut album, "Dominion Reptilian," both music critics and fans stood up with keen interest. The album was a refreshing hybrid of musical styles, an embodiment of melodic death, classic Metal and hints of a more groovier Stoner influence. That release had amongst its ranks one fond character on its side - the voice of Johan Liiva. More than just the former vocalist for ARCH ENEMY, Liiva and HEARSE released "Dominion Reptilian" to high acclaim throughout Europe. The band's follow-up to "Dominion Reptilian," "Armageddon Mon Amour," has just been released through Karmageddon Media, and is much more detailed in scope with a much-improved production. The other two members of HEARSE, veteran drummer Max Thornell (Furbowl, Devourment) and long-time friend/guitarist Mattias Ljung round out the band with excellent musicianship on "Armageddon Mon Amour," a heady dose of Euro Death/Thrash that should not be ignored.

(RockAndMetal.com)
MELEE recently finished recording their full-length debut album, "Everyday Behavior," with producer J. Robbins at San Francisco's Tiny Telephone studios, which is scheduled for release on June 29th. Piano-based rhythms, sugar-coated pop hooks and Beach Boys-esque harmonies aren't things you would expect to hear from a band on the Hopeless/Sub City roster, the labels that launched the successful careers of such punk bands as THRICE and AVENGED SEVENFOLD. However, Orange County-based MELEE incorporates the aforementioned elements to formulate an album rich with songs that merge the Indie Rock sound with pop sensibilities that will strike a chord with not only the Punk-based crowd, but will also extend outwards to fans of arists such as ROONEY, MAROON 5 and MICHELLE BRANCH. Meanwhile, Southern California fans of the band will get the chance to catch the band live very soon, as MELEE are heading out on a mini-tour with RX BANDITS, and will be playing some local L.A. shows, as well as a record release party in the OC.

STARSHIP may have "built this city on rock and roll," but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's song 'We Built This City' as the worst song ever. Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said. The list, which appears in the May issue, includes songs by NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK, MEAT LOAF, THE DOORS, LIONEL RICHIE, MC HAMMER and THE BEACH BOYS, among others. Blender describes 1985's 'We Built This City' as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar." Starship lead singer Grace Slick says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc," Slick said.

04.21.04
(Reuters)
BILLY CORGAN played his first-ever solo show in his Chicago hometown Monday at The Metro, the venue where he first cut his teeth with SMASHING PUMPKINS and has used as a rehearsal space as of late. Working on any number of projects, including a solo album, a poetry book and a new website/blog, Corgan chose to perform a series of songs he has written about his hometown. The evening was filmed for a DVD, but the songs might never be recorded in any other fashion. Each of the 1,100 audience members -- some of whom waited as much as 13 hours outside the venue in order to be up front -- received a program/lyric book. Besides lyrics, the booklets were filled with photos from the 1893 Columbian Exposition And World's Fair, which was hosted by Chicago and served as inspiration for some of the songs. The focus of the 15-song show was a 12-song cycle with topics ranging from Chicago's baseball teams ('Black Sox') to a defunct theme park ('Riverview'), to The World's Fair ('The World's Fair' and 'White City.'). Several of the songs had surfaced in early shows by his now-defunct post-Pumpkins project ZWAN, but many...

The family of a French actress beaten to death by her rock star boyfriend in Lithuania is appealing against his eight-year jail sentence, their lawyer said. Marie Trintignant died last August of head injuries sustained during a fight in Vilnius where she was shooting a film. She was 41 years old, and a mother of four. Her boyfriend, Bertrand Cantat, lead singer of popular French rock band NOIR DESIR ("Black Desire"), was convicted of homicide by a Lithuanian court last month and sentenced to prison for beating Trintignant to death in a hotel room row. "My client is exercising her right to appeal," the Trintignant family's lawyer Kazimieras Motieka told Reuters, saying Trintignant's mother Nadine wanted the jail sentence raised to 10 years. "We do not see any of the mitigating circumstances the court took into account when deciding the sentence," Motieka said. Cantat, 40, who had faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, told the court he slapped his lover during a heated quarrel in their hotel room, causing her to fall and hit her head on a radiator. He said he had not intended to kill her.

BRAZIL's 'A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life' Is Released

BRAZIL's new album, "A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life," is being released today by Fearless Records. The new offering, the band's full-length debut, features 12 new songs written with the same ambitious attitude of the "Dasein" EP, melding elements of Progressive Rock, New Wave, and Punk. The sound palette that BRAZIL employs on "A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life" also comes from not only the usual six-member wall-of-sound, but a pastiche of strings, saxophone, three keyboards, and various combinations of metal and violin bow on guitar strings. Desiring to get their music into the ears of a bigger audience, the boys in BRAZIL sent their demo to every label and zine they could find in 2001. Within two weeks, they received a call from Fearless, and things quickly began to change. By November, they were touring with MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, and during the next five months they accompanied bands including HOPESFALL, KISSING CHAOS, and RETISONIC.

(AP)
A former Moonlite BunnyRanch prostitute who accused VINCE NEIL of assaulting her is suing the former MOTLEY CRUE frontman, the brothel, and its owner. The lawsuit, filed last week, seeks unspecified damages of at least $20,000 for lost wages and other costs stemming from the July 10th, 2003 incident. Neil, who has a home in Las Vegas, pleaded no contest earlier this month to misdemeanor battery in the incident. He was fined $1,000 and ordered to complete anger management classes. Andrea "TrixXxie Blue" Terry claims in her lawsuit that Neil grabbed her by the neck, pushed her against a window and pulled her to the floor after she and another prostitute refused to have sex with him until he paid $4,000 for each woman. The lawsuit claims brothel owner Dennis Hof was negligent because he didn't call police and because the panic button in her room wasn't working. Hof told The Las Vegas Sun he believes Terry made up the story. He said Terry should have known Neil would not have to pay for her services. "We don't charge celebrities, we pay the girls ourselves," Hof said.

U.S. TROOPS Blasting Rock And Metal In Siege Of Fallujah
04.19.04
(AP)
In Fallujah's darkened, empty streets, U.S. troops blast AC/DC's 'Hell's Bells' and other rock music full volume from a huge speaker, hoping to grate on the nerves of this Sunni Muslim city's gunmen and give a laugh to Marines along the front line. Unable to advance farther into the city, an Army psychological operations team hopes a mix of hard rock, heavy metal and insults shouted in Arabic - including "You shoot like a goat herder" - will draw gunmen to step forward and attack. But no luck Thursday night. The loud music recalls the Army's use of rap and rock to help flush out Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega after the December 1989 invasion on his country, and the FBI's blaring progressively more irritating tunes in an attempt to end a standoff with armed members of the Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas in 1993. The Marines' psychological operations came as U.S. negotiators were pressing Fallujah representatives to get gunmen in the city to abide by a cease-fire...

Dutch Progressive Metal band TEXTURES has parted ways with vocalist Pieter Verpaalen due to musical differences. However, a new vocalist has already been found in Eric Kalsbeek, formerly of BRAINSHAKE. TEXTURES' new album, "Polars," was recently voted Album Of The Month in major metal Dutch magazine Aardschock, and their first video for the song 'Ostensibly Impregnable' has gotten a roaring response on Holland TV channel The Box - entering their charts at No. 1. There's a large scale of words to define the Textures sound: dynamic, progressive, refreshing, aggressive, atmospheric. The use of modern, electronic instruments and uncommon measures isn't avoided either. The band's influences are also drawn from many different musical genres. At the end of 2001, TEXTURES' band members built a studio of their own to record "Polars," for which the production, mastering and artwork were left completely in the hands of the band.

The "Icons Of 20th Century Music Auction" was conducted Saturday night by Heritage Galleries of Dallas in conjunction with the 27th annual Dallas Guitar Show and MusicFest 2004. The white, 1910-era upright piano sold to an anonymous buyer outside the United States. "Elton John and his longtime composing collaborator, Bernie Taupin, wrote more than 100 songs on the piano, including 'Your Song' and 'Tiny Dancer,'" said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Galleries. The piano, autographed by John and Taupin, was displayed for the past two years at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. Other auction highlights included $15,312 for the "Hollywood Walk Of Fame" star brass plaque awarded to John in October 1975, and $11,750 for a party invitation card autographed in 1964 by The Beatles and their manager. John Lennon's 1975 Grammy presenters medal also went for $8,225, and two dress shirts worn by Elvis Presley sold for $1,225 each.
