ALICE IN CHAINS 'Essential' Compilation Is Due March 30th
03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) The legacy of ALICE IN CHAINS will be celebrated on a two-disc retrospective, "The Essential," due March 30th from Columbia/Legacy Records. ALICE IN CHAINS was an undeniable influence on such current bands as STAIND and GODSMACK, the latter of whom is named after an AIC song. Beyond familiar songs such as 'Them Bones,' 'Rooster,' 'No Excuses,' 'Heaven Beside You,' 'Would?' and 'I Stay Away,' the 29-track set sports two contributions to the 1993 "Last Action Hero" soundtrack ('What the Hell Have I,' 'A Little Bitter') that have been remixed by producer Toby Wright. Also included are two cuts from ALICE IN CHAINS' 1996 "Unplugged" release and the 1999 "Music Bank" box set. Singer Layne Staley's struggles with drug abuse had derailed AIC by the release of their 1995 self-titled album, the last studio album they would record. Staley was rarely seen in public in the ensuing years, and was found dead of a drug overdose on April 19th, 2002, in Seattle, Washington.
03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) THE CROWN has decided to call it a day after spending 14 years together as a band. The following message is posted on their official website: "Today, we, the dudes of The Crown, have decided to call it quits. I'm sure every member in the band can still come up with 10 reasons for continuing and 10 reasons for giving up, but after some heavy consideration we have decided to finally find out what life is like without playing in The Crown. It's been a blast writing/performing together all these years, taking this band to levels that we never even knew of. Also getting to know other people in other bands on the road has been amazing. Seeing new places and getting to see and hear new, great bands has totally blown us away - we sure had our share of fun. Too many tours gone bad due to not at all professional tour arrangements is maybe the main reason for giving up (we do indeed have stories about tour managers/agencies and the business in general; the best ones...)" BRAZIL's 'A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life' Coming 4/20
03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Fearless Records has announced the release of the new BRAZIL album, entitled "A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life," which is scheduled for release April 20th. BRAZIL has toured the US several times in support of their 2002 debut EP, "Dasein." In their travels, they teamed up with Blaze James, manager of COHEED AND CAMBRIA, SPARTA, and AT THE DRIVE-IN. "A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life" was produced and engineered by Alex Newport, who has worked with bands such as THE MARS VOLTA and THE LOCUST. Together, Newport and BRAZIL have created a massive soundscape of quality progressive and experimental rock. "Aside from our usual 6-member wall of sound, we also tracked cello, saxophone, drum machines ran through pedals, 3 different keyboards, and various combinations of metal and violin bows on guitar strings," says singer/frontman Jonathon Newby.
03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) ORANGE GOBLIN are back in the saddle again. Not only are they surviving, but they continue to uphold the traditions of great British heavy metal and forge forward. ORANGE GOBLIN have returned with the release of their new album, "Thieving From The House Of God," which manages to encapsulate all of the unique traits that fans have become so familiar with from their previous four albums. From the psychedelic noodlings of 'Frequencies From Planet Ten' to the greasy, biker groove of 'Time Travelling Blues.' The crushing cosmic doom of 'The Big Black' right through to the aggressive punk-metal fusion of 'Coup de Grace' -- it's all evident here. "Thieving From The House Of God" is a definite progression which sees ORANGE GOBLIN continue to motor onward, freeing themselves from any stagnant pigeonhole that may be thrown their way. Over the last nine years, since their formation... [full story]
MILLENCOLIN Singer Sarcevic's 'Lock-Sport-Krock' On Way
03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Burning Heart Records will release the new solo album from MILLENCOLIN vocalist NIKOLA SARCEVIC in the European territories on March 29th. The effort will also be released by Epitaph Records in North America. This is what Sarcevic has to say about it: "I am very excited and happy to inform you about my first solo album. Last summer I entered Svenska Grammofon Studion in Gothenburg to record something that would eventually turn out as an album. Together with Henrik Wind (the Peepshows), Thomas Falk (Bombshell Rocks), Mieszko Talarczyk (Nasum) and some other friends and musicians, I recorded 13 songs, of which 11 will be on the album. Soundwise, the material ranges from Boogie-Woogie to Country and Folkrock. I think the word "love" is mentioned in each and every song, so If there is a theme of the album, it's definitely LOVE. Otherwise I would say that the songs are quite different from each other, and a lot different to what I've done with Millencolin."
03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) In one of the most anticipated (and eagerly awaited) reunions in Death Metal history, OBITUARY returned to the stage in the city where it all began: Tampa, Florida. Forget every band that played last weekend's Sun N' Steel Festival. This was it. OBITUARY. The band that authored some of the genre's finest and most unforgettable albums: "Slowly We Rot," "Cause Of Death," "The End Complete"... A heaving, belching nauseously heavy sound that some have tried to duplicate and none have ever replicated. Cut to March 7th, 2004. The OBITUARY banner is hanging. The old Michael Whelan scrims from the "Cause Of Death" era flank the stage, and the anticipation is as thick as the Florida night air. When the band takes the stage, breaking into (appropriate enough) "Back From The Dead," it's like they've never left. In fact, with the exception of guitarist Allen West's shaved head, the entire band... [full story]

03.12.04 (RockAndMetal.com) After finishing up a successful European tour with Century Media label-mates LACUNA COIL, MOONSPELL and POISONBLACK, Sweden's PASSENGER have entered the studio to attack recordings to their still untitled upcoming new album, the follow up to 2003's self-titled debut album. This is what drummer Patrik J. Sten (ex-TRANSPORT LEAGUE) recently posted on PASSENGER's official website (www.passenger.nu): "We first started recording drumtracks for 12 new songs back on February 9th. Recording has been very fast so far, and the sound is amazing. The recording of the tracks has been done at Studio Fredman where I work, and we probably will do some tracking at Phlat Planet where Anders (Friden - vocals, IN FLAMES) works, since both studios are in the same location. We have not yet decided where or with whom we are going to mix it, but we feel that we have to try something new for this one." Challenged by the great response to songs like 'In Reverse,' PASSENGER is heading for a more stripped-down sound on the new album.
PETER CRISS Unsure Of Inclusion On KISS Japanese Tour
03.11.04 (Reuters) When KISS begins a five-date Japanese tour May 27 in Tokyo, PETER CRISS may not be sitting atop his familiar stool behind the drums. In a posting on his official web site, www.petercriss.net, Criss says his contract with KISS has expired and that he has not yet been informed what, if any, his future status with the group is. "No one, again no one has called me, or my attorney about an extension for future touring," he says. "As a founding member I find this to be disrespectful to me, and to the fans that have made us one of the biggest bands in the world. You will always get the truth from me, I have no reason to lie to the people that gave me such a wonderful life. And that's the God's honest truth." On their lengthy recent tour with AEROSMITH, KISS performed without original guitarist Ace Frehley, who was replaced by former tour manager Tommy Thayer, who controversially donned Ace's "Spaceman" make-up. An official KISS spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
03.11.04 (RockAndMetal.com) SLIPKNOT has revealed the title of their forthcoming album is going to be "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)." After more than two years in hibernation, the band is about to re-emerge with a new look as well, as the group will don its third series of masks on this year's Jagermeister Music Tour, which begins March 30th in Orlando, Florida. The new masks are more streamlined than those SLIPKNOT wore on the 2002 tour for their second album, "Iowa," but the look is basically the same. "It's just an extension of what we wore last time, they just have more elaborate detail," says drummer Joey Jordison. "You can still tell which guy is who, so I don't think the kids are gonna be confused." Nor will they be confused by SLIPKNOT's new music, Jordison said. As with the masks, the vibe is instantly familiar, but the songs are more developed than the group's prior material. The first track released will be 'Pulse Of The Maggots,' which comes out the same day the Jagermeister tour... [full story]
TESLA Releases 'Into The Now' Studio Effort On Sanctuary
03.11.04 (RockAndMetal.com) TESLA has released their long-awaited new studio album, "Into The Now," on Sanctuary Records. The original lineup of vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarist Frank Hannon, guitarist Tommy Skeoch, bass player Brian Wheat and drummer Troy Luccketta spent more than two years writing and recording "Into The Now". TESLA co-produced the album with Michael Rosen. According to an official press release, TESLA changed their entire way of working for "Into The Now," and that included serious personal and musical reconnections as the foundation for the new album. After such a long layoff, the band members wondered whether they would be able to write strong songs and produce an album largely by themselves. Keith, Hannon, Skeoch, Wheat and Luccketta agreed that they had to be satisfied with the songs, and that wasn't always the case in the past. They realized how important this new album was... 03.11.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Hollywood's MY RUIN have been added as direct support to SOIL's U.S. tour. The band's first U.S. tour supporting their current album, "The Horror Of Beauty," introduces American audiences to their captivating live performance. MY RUIN toured England in 2003 to very positive press and crowd response. Powerplay called MY RUIN'S October performance at London's Garage "a blisteringly powerful performance...[which] left no doubt in the minds of all that they are very hot property indeed. The passion of their front woman was matched only by the sheer power and intensity of their music. An awesome gig to witness." Tairrie B., the band's vocalist, is excited to be hitting the road and bringing MY RUIN'S anger and angst to a town near you: "We're looking forward to playing with Soil and not only seeing some familiar faces, but making new fans and friends while on the road in support of our new album. We're thrilled to be included, and can't wait for everyone to see us live."
EMISSIONS FROM THE MONOLITH Launches End Of May
03.11.04 (RockAndMetal.com) The sixth annual EMISSIONS FROM THE MONOLITH music festival launches on Memorial Day weekend, from Thursday, May 27th to Sunday, May 30th. As always, the fest pours forth the filthy best in underground hard rock, stoner, doom, and metal at the renowned Nyabinghi, located in Youngstown, Ohio at 1229 Salt Springs Road. The roaring behemoth that is EMISSIONS FROM THE MONOLITH continues to grow. Tickets went on sale in early December, and festival producer/club owner Greg Barratt expects this year's event to be sold out months before the kickoff in late May. Hard-hitting acts like ORANGE GOBLIN, THE ATOMIC BITCHWAX, ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY, and ACID KING have laid down the rock law at past EMISSIONS FROM THE MONOLITH fests, and this year's lineup promises to be as diverse and bowel-movingly heavy as any yet to taint the Nyabinghi's hallowed stage. The festival brings together bands, fans, and music journalists for a marathon of pummeling music and good, not-so-clean fun.
03.11.04 (RockAndMetal.com) On April 26th, vocalist TIMO KOTIPELTO will release his second solo album, entitled "Coldness." After a surprising split with his long-standing band STRATOVARIUS (with whom he is still performing on some upcoming European festivals), this new effort shows the vast diversity of Kotipelto's songwriting abilities and vocal skills. "Coldness" was recorded by Janne Wirman at Beyond Abilities Studios, Tero Kostermaa at HIGH AND LOUD's Elk Studios and Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland. Mixing by Mikko Karmila and mastering by Mika Jussila were also done at Finnvox. Matthias Noren, also known from his works for bands like INTO ETERNITY, LOST HORIZON and EVERGREY, delivered the artwork for "Coldness." Additionally, the album will contain a video-clip for the song 'Reasons,' and a "making of" segment for the video-shoot and the album's studio recordings as a bonus. In the meantime, the single 'Reasons' will street in Europe come March 22nd.

03.11.04 (RockAndMetal.com) In a celebration of Oakland-based SKINLAB's decade-long career, Century Media will release a double-disc set entitled "Nerve Damage" on April 20th. Comprising 34 tracks, "Nerve Damage" includes two new cuts ('Losing All,' 'Beneath The Surface') alongside previously unreleased demo tracks, alternate mixes of SKINLAB classics like 'When Pain Comes To Surface' and 'Slave The Way,' covers, video clips and the sought after deleted "Eyesore" EP. SKINLAB has built their dedicated fanbase through relentless live performances and a grueling road-dog mentality that saw them take on the challenge of playing in front of any crowd, ranging from EARTH CRISIS and KITTIE to NEUROSIS and SLAYER, among others. The raw energy channeled during their live shows is effectively captured on this new compilation through a live set from 2003's San Francisco 420 Fest. "Nerve Damage" offers over two hours of brutality and showcases SKINLAB's rapid evolution.
BLONDIE Returning With 'The Curse Of Blondie' April 6th
03.10.04 (RockAndMetal.com) BLONDIE returns with their long-anticipated new release on Sanctuary Records, "The Curse Of Blondie," on April 6th. The band comes back to reclaim its crown as one of America's greatest pop bands with an album of all new material, which is their first release of all new material in five years. "The Curse Of Blondie" is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed reunion record, "No Exit," which was released in 1999 and spawned the Top Ten hit 'Maria.' This release is the band's eighth studio album - first for Sanctuary - and is the most musically accomplished and surprising of their long career. The first single, 'Good Boys,' recaptures the classic BLONDIE sound that propelled Deborah Harry and company to stardom over twenty-five years ago. "The Curse Of Blondie" is an album of extraordinary richness and variety filled with strong songs that have come to typify the sound that is BLONDIE. The album starts off strong with 'Shakedown,' an R & B hip-hop gem, and moves onto major pop tunes like the infectious 'Hello Joe' (which is dedicated...) [full story]

AEROSMITH Pays Tribute To Blues With 'Honkin' On Bobo'
03.10.04 (RockAndMetal.com) On Tuesday, March 30th, AEROSMITH will return with an album of gritty blues covers called "Honkin' On Bobo." The album will feature eleven classic blues tracks, plus one brand new AEROSMITH tune, 'The Grind.' Paying the ultimate homage to their roots, "Honkin' On Bobo" sees Aerosmith unleash some of the best blues songs ever released in their imitable style, from the likes of Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Fisher/Hopkins, Blind Willie McTell and more. AEROSMITH lead guitarist Joe Perry recently explained that although the band didn't want to do disservice to the originals with a rock makeover, they felt it was the most appropriate way they could acknowledge the influence blues music has had on the band. "As anyone who listens to a lot of music knows, the line between rock and blues is blurry and sometimes non-existent. Both forms of music shake hands and embrace like the close friends they are. Muddy Waters once said the blues had a baby and they called it rock'n'roll."
03.10.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Appropriately packaged in leather and studs, a four-disc JUDAS PRIEST box set will be released May 4th by Sony Music/Legacy Records. Dubbed "Metalogy," the collection gathers 65 tracks of hits, favorites, B-sides and rarities recorded by the veteran heavy metal act between 1972 and 2002. The material included in the box covers music released on the Gull, Sony Music/Columbia, CMC International, SPV, Atlantic and JVC labels. A full color book with the band's discography and a biographical essay will also feature a timeline and previously unpublished photos. Initial pressings of "Metalogy" will also include a bonus DVD of a Dec. 12, 1982, concert in Memphis during the band's "Screaming For Vengeance" tour. Previously released on VHS as "Judas Priest Live," the concert film has been out of print for some time, and will be reissued in 5.1 Surround Sound. Estranged lead singer Rob Halford rejoined JUDAS PRIEST last year after more than 12 years away from the band.
WIL's 'Both Hands' Will Debut On EMI/Capitol March 16th
03.10.04 (RockAndMetal.com) WIL is the force behind a unique electro-acoustic songwriting style, which is showcased on his major label debut, "Both Hands." Set to be released on March 16th on EMI/Capitol Records, the 11-track album of original songs are rich in piano and cello flourishes, which contrast against WIL's strong guitar playing and vocals. Tim Trombley, Vice President Of Talent Acquisition And Artist Development at EMI Music Canada, notes: "Wil's musical style defies easy categorization. His songs define the essence of a truly great songwriter. Wil makes you 'feel' his music emotionally and physically. We're honored to welcome Wil to the EMI Music Canada family of artists." "Both Hands" has already taken a successful spin around the Canadian musical community, and has made an impressive impact on the masses. In May 2002, WIL released "Both Hands" independently, and it has gone on to sell over 5000 copies. Just prior to releasing the record, WIL teamed up with drummer Michael... [full story]
03.10.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Here's a quick chat with the new guy... CHIMAIRA's new drummer, Ricky Evensand: What did you learn about Chimaira in those 3 weeks over here? "3 weeks in a tour bus with people all around you can be a pain in the ass, but not with these guys. If you want to party you can do that, if you want to just chill out you can do that. No one in this band is hard to hang out with." Have you settled in well? "I think so, even though the language barrier can lead to misunderstandings. But it can lead to fun stuff too." How does playing with Chimaira compare to playing with Soilwork? "It's different, in Soilwork it was more improvisation. In Chimaira it is more important to play the songs the way they were written." Has anything in the last 3 weeks made you question your decision to join Chimaira? "No, not at all. I'm having a blast hopefully this will last for a long time." What has been the highlight of these UK dates for you? "The fans, they've been awesome to me."
THE WHITE STRIPES' Jack White Pleads Guilty To Assault
03.10.04 (AP) WHITE STRIPES lead singer Jack White pled guilty to assault and battery Tuesday for a fight with Von Bondies singer Jason Stollsteimer. White was accused of repeatedly punching Stollsteimer, and originally was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault. He could have faced up to a year in jail, but will avoid jail time under the plea deal. White must pay a $500 fine, plus $250 in court fees, and Judge Paula G. Humphries ordered him to attend anger management classes. She also told him not to contact Stollsteimer. The Dec. 13 fight began shortly before midnight at the Majestic Theater Center in Detroit, Michigan, where both men were in the audience for another concert. In court, White gave his account of what led to the fight. He said he hadn't seen Stollsteimer in a long time but had heard that he had made some allegations against him in the press and to mutual acquaintances. "I went up to ask him to say it to me face to face," White said.
03.10.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Candlelight Records has confirmed April 20th as the U.S. release date for the new album from Norway's KHOLD. Titled "Morke Gravers Kammer," it is the third full-length album from the popular black metal band. Recorded in Norway and completed following the band's 2003 European tour with SATYRICON, "Morke Gravers Kammer" ("The Gravediggers Dark Chamber") is an eclectic collection of fast and mid-tempo tracks that features the Oslo-based band's simple yet commanding take on the extreme style. The album features artwork by illustrious Norwegian photographer Marcel Lelienhof. He also directed the band's first video for the album track 'Dod.' Drummer/founder Sarke says: "The songs on this album are strong, and the Khold trademark is there all the way. We have our own take on black metal. We offer something different within the genre, and that can only be positive." Formed in 2000, KHOLD have released two albums to critical acclaim.
BLACK OAK ARKANSAS' 'The First 30 Years' DVD Is Out
03.09.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Raunch Rock legends BLACK OAK ARKANSAS' first-ever DVD, "Black Oak Arkansas: The First 30 Years," is now available through Rhino Records. In 2003, it's hard to believe that BLACK OAK ARKANSAS was once one of the most popular bands of the early '70s. Led by the spandex-clad, sandpaper-voiced Jim "Dandy" Mangrum, BOA was the original party band, combining boogie-driven paeans to the pleasures of the flesh with a cockeyed spirituality that belied their redneck roots. And if they weren't exactly virtuosos, it hardly mattered; on a good night, there was no band on earth that could tap into the untamed, primitive juju of rock 'n' roll like BLACK OAK ARKANSAS. Originally dubbed The Knowbody Else, the group was conceived in 1965 as a dodge to escape school, work, and the army. With the aid of some stolen musical gear, Mangrum and his juvenile delinquent buddies (guitarists Ricky Reynolds, Stanley Knight and Harvey Jett, bassist Pat Daugherty, and drummer Wayne Evans)... 03.09.04 (RockAndMetal.com) FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES' 2001 album, "Too Bad You're Beautiful," has been re-issued by Roadrunner Records as a mid-priced item in Europe. The nearly three-year-old-quintet has spent its time wisely: selling out shows in its hometown and beyond, and consistently landing in the pages of leading music magazines. FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES has shared the stage with THURSDAY, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, SUICIDE MACHINES, and FINCH in its quest for hardcore domination. "It's almost like we're a band with an identity crisis," says drummer Fran Mark, who also contributes clean, melodic vocals to the songs. "We don't settle down into one style, really. It's definitely from a hardcore background and has hardcore elements. But there are other members of the band that bring rock elements to the table." Produced by Adam D, "Too Bad You're Beautiful" shows FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES' dedication to dynamics, tempering raging storms with respites of lush, calm instrumentation.

Or so the band is told. Lastly, in PINK GREASE broadcasting news, the band recently did a student radio live band session on March 3rd for the SBN network. 3 DOORS DOWN Bassist Todd Harrell Charged In Assault
03.09.04 (RockAndMetal.com) The bass player for the rock group 3 DOORS DOWN has been charged with hitting a newspaper carrier who had accused him of stealing papers from a convenience-store vending machine. Todd Harrell, 32, was charged with simple assault following the Friday dispute at the Cheap-O-Deep-O in Moss Point, Mississippi. The carrier, Ronnie Boulware, 53, told investigators Harrell got out of his vehicle, struck him three times in the face and kicked him in the groin after he and his wife confronted the rocker. Boulware told police he then got a handgun from his vehicle and threatened Harrell with it. Boulware was charged with exhibiting a weapon during the dispute. Moss Point police Lt. Chuck Coleman said Boulware told officers that Harrell took three newspapers from the coin-operated newspaper stand, but paid for only one. However, Harrell's attorney, Paul Benton, said Harrell entered the store to get change and then legally bought the newspapers that Boulware said were stolen.
03.09.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Norwegian keepers of Hell DIMMU BORGIR are geared up to command their army of darkness into another massive march across the United States. The first and only black metal band to bombard the main stage at OZZFEST, DIMMU BORGIR is third on this year's bill. The group uses classical arrangements as an essential piece in their unique sound, carving a niche in the metal world as one of the genre's most savage and creative acts. Since forming in 1993, DIMMU BORGIR have released seven full length albums, with "Death Cult Armageddon" being the most recent and one of the only black metal releases to chart on the Billboard 200. Guitarist Silenoz describes his excitement over being able to perform on the main stage, "For us to participate on Ozzfest, and on top of that, to be playing on the main stage with the big league, is something that we are very proud of! Such a chance doesn't come by everyday, or if at all. We'll take this opportunity and turn it into Armageddon!!!"

03.09.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Arizona's FALL OF EMPYREAN have finished with the recording of their upcoming full-length debut album, "A Darkness Remembered." FALL OF EMPYREAN began in 1999, as founding member and guitarist Justin Burning set out to gather musicians to mold the atmospheric dirges he had been inspired to create, influenced by such bands as AGALLOCH, MY DYING BRIDE, OCTOBER TIDE, KATATONIA, OPETH and the like. Following the release of this first self-titled demo in the summer of 2001, FALL OF EMPYREAN played a couple of live shows and strove to bring their music to the attention of various labels, with no substantial success. The band finally entered Studio-Z/Pipeline Audio in June of 2002 to record their follow-up EP, and circulate their incarnation of atmospheric doom metal. After numerous delays with the duplication company, "Anhedonia" was finally released in December of 2002.
R.E.M.'s 'Perfect Square' Live Concert DVD Sees Release
03.08.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Warner Bros. Records has released "Perfect Square" internationally, the full-length DVD of R.E.M.'s Wiesbaden, Germany concert from their 2003 tour. The DVD will be available in the United States on March 16th. "Perfect Square" includes the entire 23-song set from Wiesbaden in its full cinematic glory. This show has been described by many "as the best of the tour." "Perfect Square" also contains bonus material in the form of "A Stirling Performance," the documentary film produced by Lonely Goat during the "Up" tour. "A Stirling Performance" chronicles the impact R.E.M. had on a small Scottish town over the course of three days in July of 1999. R.E.M. is currently back in the studio working on songs for their new album, which will be released sometime in the Fall. The still-untitled release will be followed by a tour of the USA in the Fall, and a World Tour in early 2005. According to frontman Michael Stipe, the band has already completed sixteen new songs for the album.
03.08.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Hybrid Metal band SCARLET have released their full-length debut album, "Cult Classic," through both Ferret Music and Roadrunner Records internationally. With a previous Ferret Music release, an EP entitled "Breaking The Dead Stare," SCARLET dropped the jaws of fans when they announced their breakup in 2000. Some members went on to other projects including SPITFIRE, who recorded for Tooth And Nail Records, but in the Summer of 2002, the wealth of the original members reunited to record a new EP for Ferret Music, "Something To Lust About." The rebirth of SCARLET began as a studio project, but with the addition of more players, it became evident that momentum was building, and something greater than merely releasing a record was necessary: an erotic wave of terror and ferocity that is intended to reshape and revolutionize the face of metallic hardcore. "Cult Classic" is simply SCARLET's personal tribute to American overindulgence and ultra-violence.
DAVID BOWIE: Heading For Another Experimental Phase
03.08.04 (AP) DAVID BOWIE, pushing 60, says he's headed for another experimental phase. Speaking in Tokyo to start this week's Japan leg of his world tour, Bowie said he's stripping down his act to try out some new approaches. "I'm heading for another period of experimentation," he said. "(I'm at) a time when I'm collecting myself before I break all my own rules." Bowie has gone through various personas during his five-decade career - Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, Philadelphia soul man, avant-garde rocker. Now, he said, he wants to focus on his songwriting and singing. "It's probably the simplest tour that I've ever done," Bowie said, regarding his first world tour since 1995. He released his latest album, "Reality," last September. The 57-year-old said it's harder to get his music heard these days because of his age. But he added that he enjoys seeing life get simpler as he ages. "I was quite scared of getting old in my 40s," he said. "But as I approach 60 ... you learn to embrace getting older."

BLONDE REDHEAD's 'Misery Is A Butterfly' Due Tomorrow
03.08.04 (RockAndMetal.com) New York Experimental Rockers BLONDE REDHEAD's new album, "Misery Is A Butterfly," will be released tomorrow via 4AD Recordings. BLONDE REDHEAD are that rarest of things - a band whose voice has grown stronger, clearer and more distinctive with every record that they have made. Their reward for this has been an audience whose numbers have quietly grown over the course of their career, almost entirely by word of mouth. Trace elements of the spare otherworldliness and bittersweet tension that contribute to the band's unique sound can be discerned even in the early (mid-90s) records that they made for Smells Like Records. But what's more striking about those releases is a stridency and an impulsive abrasiveness inspired by the no-wave explorations of Downtown NYC and the refusenik spirit of DC's Dischord roster. BLONDE REDHEAD's command of oblique melody and urge towards textural... [full story]

DAVID CROSBY Arrested On Marijuana And Gun Charges
03.08.04 (AP) DAVID CROSBY was arrested on marijuana and gun possession charges early Saturday at a Times Square hotel in New York City, hours after earning a standing ovation at a New Jersey concert, police said. Crosby, 62, a two-time inductee to The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, was arrested at 1 a.m. at the DoubleTree Suites Hotel with an ounce of marijuana, a .45-caliber handgun and a knife in his possession. The singer had performed Friday night with his band, CPR, at a Wayne, N.J., college. The veteran rocker had checked out of the hotel after the show, but left behind a piece of luggage, police said.
