JOHNNY ROTTEN Walks Off Set Of Reality TV Show
02.06.04
(AP)
Former SEX PISTOLS singer JOHNNY ROTTEN - who let fly with a string of expletives on a live celebrity reality TV show - walked off the set yesterday. Early morning viewers of "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" saw Rotten (now known as John Lydon) hug his fellow contestants before walking off the set in the Australian rain forest. Television station ITV said they lowered a drawbridge that separates the "Big Brother"-style camp from the outside world to allow Lydon to leave. His departure came just hours after ITV producers gave the 47-year-old a dressing down for swearing on a live segment of the popular program that is being followed by about 10 million Britons each night. ITV bosses imposed a time delay Wednesday after the outburst of bad language from Lydon when he was told that the public had voted to keep him in the show. "He has been fantastic entertainment on the show and viewers and his fellow..."

Notorious Black Metallers OLD MAN'S CHILD are amongst the nominees for this year's "Spellemansprisen" (http://www.spellemann.no), Norway's version of the "Metal Grammy," for their current album, "In Defiance Of Existence." As OLD MAN'S CHILD are one of the veterans of the Norwegian Melodic Black Metal scene, with five influential albums plus an MCD under their belts now, the band, around mastermind Galder (guitar/vocals) surely deserves this honor. Along with fellow evildoers DIMMU BORGIR and ENSLAVED, OLD MAN'S CHILD are now eagerly awaiting the official ceremony, which takes place on February 28th in the Chateau Neuf in Oslo, Norway. Century Media has also just released a 5-LP box set entitled "The Historical Plague," which contains all OLD MAN'S CHILD albums from "Born Of The Flickering" to "In Defiance Of Existence," all remastered on vinyl.
[FREE MP3] THE CHARLATANS Done Recording Upcoming Album

THE CHARLATANS have completed the recording of their eighth studio album, which took place in their own Big Mushroom Studios in Cheshire, UK, with mixing and mastering now underway. In a message on the band's official website, the band revealed more about the new songs. They said: "'Dead Love' is simply inspired. A most beautiful song. We brought in a cello and viola player in from the Liverpool Philharmonic to play parts as instructed by Mr (Mark - guitar) Collins himself. 'Up At The Lake' is mindblowing... possibly the most in your face tune delivered by this band in many a day. You know that sometimes just about everything falls into place and everything that can be right is right about a track... well 'Up At The Lake' is about as right as it gets. The BIG news is the shared lead vocal tracking on 'Loving You Is Easy' featuring Tony (Rogers - organ) alongside Tim... really, really special."

Vocalist Lars Vognstrup has decided to leave RAUNCHY after 10 years with the band. Here is an official statement from Vognstrup on his departure:
"Hey guys and ladies of course. With very much sadness I have to inform you that, after ten years, I've decided to sign out of my beloved band RAUNCHY and pass on the legacy to Kasper Thomsen. RAUNCHY is and will continue to be insanely tight, banging, clever stuff and way above what ever you decide to compare it to. It's been fun reading about some of the bands we've been compared to through the years. Some of them I've never heard, and some of them are true. But if you know anything about good music, genre aside, you'll know immediately by listening to it that our songs come straight from the heart and that's what's keeping it real and what'll make the difference, you know, take it to the top!" - Thanks a lot, Lars

As THE CURE nears its third decade at the forefront of pop culture, Universal, Rhino and Fiction/Elektra are celebrating the band's remarkable career with the release of "The Cure: Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years)," a four-disc box set of hard-to-find gems, never-before-seen photos, track-by track-breakdowns and extensive liner notes. "The first thing I ever did when I got a new single," remembers Cure vocalist Robert Smith, "was flip it over and play the other side. I always hoped the B-side would give me another version of the artist - something as good as the A-side, but somehow different. I expected great B-sides from the artists I loved..." Come 1978, when THE CURE released their debut single, 'Killing An Arab,' Smith expected no less from himself than he had from his heroes. It's evident from the very first cut in this box set, '10:15 Saturday Night,' that he intended THE CURE's...

SOCIETY 1 bassist Aleister has announced that the band's much-hyped "Suspension Show" at LA's Key Club on March 11th will be his final show with the band. SOCIETY 1 leader Matt "The Lord" Zane had this to say: "Let me just say that the band will continue. It's unfortunate because I had high hopes for Aleister, but after 8 months of touring he realized he wasn't cut out for this lifestyle. This isn't for everybody. It's not easy, especially in this band. I can't blame anybody for wanting to pursue other interests that are not so far outside mundane society. I think of our situation as being in constant opposition to so many things. The pressures can tear you down to the point of forcing you back into the masses. They need to eradicate the loose anomalies, because they destroy the reality that everyone collectively believes in. I will always remain separate. We will send Aleister back into the world of the acceptable behaviors after March 11th with the best of wishes for his new life."

Band members were also joined in the studio by Oleg Smirnoff on keyboards, a great musician and friend of the band, as well as many other special guests such as vocalist Morby (Time Machine, Labyrinth, Domine), Terence Holler and Martin Khyn (vocals and bass, from Eldritch), and Robert Lukather on soprano sax. [FREE MP3] PAUL SIMON Early Album Finally Seeing A U.S. Release

(Reuters)
An album PAUL SIMON recorded in 1965 that has never seen the light of day in America will get its first official release here this spring. "The Paul Simon Songbook," previously only available as an import and long out-of-print even in that form, is due March 23rd via Columbia/Legacy. The original 12-track album was recorded in the wake of the lukewarm response afforded Simon & Garfunkel's 1964 debut, "Wednesday Morning 3 A.M." Simon moved to London, building an audience while honing his material at coffeehouse performances. Entering the studio in June 1965 with producers Stanley West and Reginald Warburton, he offered solo acoustic takes on such future staples as 'I Am A Rock,' 'April Come She Will' and 'The Sounds Of Silence.' The resulting "Songbook" was issued by CBS Records in England, but was never released in North America, reportedly due to Simon's dissatisfaction with the...

Kal Karman, video director for LINEA 77's 'Third Moon' and 'Fantasma,' recently had this to say about his ideas behind the making of the 'Third Moon' video: "My approach for 'Third Moon' was to be as real and natural as possible. Usually music videos begin with writing a concept on paper, then finding actors or models, hiring make-up artists and stylists etc. For this project, I was curious to 'do nothing.' I was inspired by "Elephant" by Gus Van Sant. I find that film to essentially be a series of beautiful, simple portraits of youth culture. So I chose four kids that were at LINEA 77's concert in Torino. I then spent a day with each one of them, following their lives and filming what happened. I shot the video with the same 'realistic' approach: we see them exactly as they are during a concert. We used the same technicians for the lighting, and got real fans for the scene. The video resulltingly has the theme of 'being young.'"

In the continuing war against digital pirates, The National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences will introduce an educational campaign against illegal downloading during the 48th annual Grammy Awards, scheduled to air this Sunday, February 8th. The campaign, "What's Your Download," is designed to teach consumers to make informed ethical and legal decisions about downloading. NARAS president Neil Portnow has told Billboard the new initiative will bow during the CBS telecast. Additionally, a public service announcement will air during the ceremony. The PSA will guide viewers to whatsthedownload.com, which provides overviews of download issues and comments from individuals involved in the music-making process. Portnow says NARAS spent more than a year developing the campaign. NARAS and the research division of the Edelman marketing firm gathered proprietary information to determine its direction. "I felt that if we were going to speak on this important issue, we should not be shooting from the hip..."

Major Labels Initiate Test Marketing New 'DualDisc' Hybrids
02.06.04
(Reuters)
In a collaborative effort, all five major record labels have initiated test marketing of a dual-sided CD/DVD hybrid disc known as DualDisc. The companies have released a total of about 15 discs in Boston and Seattle, representatives confirm. Warner Music Group, a primary proponent of the DVD-Audio format, has released DualDisc albums by R.E.M., P.O.D., Barenaked Ladies, Donald Fagen and Linkin Park. The CD side of the disc contains standard two-channel, 16-bit/44.1kHz audio, while the DVD side features a high-resolution, 5.1-channel mix of the album. Other companies, including BMG, have opted to include music videos on the DVD side of their releases. BMG has issued a DualDisc by Usher. Sony, which developed and supports the Super Audio CD format, has released DualDiscs by AC/DC, Audioslave, David Bowie and Good Charlotte. Another hybrid CD/DVD, DVD Plus, has already hit the market from DVD Plus International. Rounder Records has released a DVD Plus by Kathleen Edwards; RCA has issued one by The Calling. Both are EP-length discs.

Prior to the 2003 tour, the former had not been played live since 1989, while the latter hadn't been unearthed since 1984. Also featured are 'Bad Day' and 'Animal,' the two new songs included on the recent best-of "In Time" album, plus such R.E.M. favorites as 'The One I Love,' 'Orange Crush,' 'Country Feedback' and the show-closing 'It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).' "Perfect Square" is bolstered by the documentary "A Stirling Performance," which chronicles the set-up for R.E.M.'s 1999 three-night stand in the small Scottish town of Stirling.

We hope to start recording in February and have 15 songs together at the moment. We have been putting some new ones into the set and they seem to be going down well. After this tour, we'll look forward to playing Nottingham Rock City and then Brixton on Thursday night as part of the NME Brats Shows. I'm really looking forward to the Brixton show."

"Only Tools And Corpses," the long-awaited second album from UK Gore Heroes GOREROTTED, has been released by Metal Blade Records. The direction of the band is now in full force, with Mr. Gore's "Cockney Oi" vocals playing off perfectly against Goreskin's "deep, grindcore slabs of throat" and Wilson's high-pitched backing vocals that give GOREROTTED their own unique sound. This is a form of splatter/grind/death Metal with a crusty, punk edge that could only come out of the downtrodden slums of London. Just like "Mutilated In Minutes" (from which several tracks appeared on the soundtrack of the indie horror movie "The Incredibly Strange People Show"), you won't find any "album filler" lurking here. "Only Tools and Corpses" is a 9-song assault on the senses, and was recorded and mixed at the UK's renowned Philia Studios, engineered and produced by Dave Chang, and mastered at Turan Audio.

Saxophonist CORNELIUS BUMPUS, a former member of The Doobie Brothers who had performed with Steely Dan since 1993, died Tuesday en route to a series of performances in California. He was 58. Bumpus had a heart attack on a commercial flight from New York, said his friend, Rod Harris, an organizer of the Columbia College Jazz Concert Series, where Bumpus was to perform this week. "I was expecting to hear from him today, then his wife called," Harris said. "She told me that they landed in Kansas City. We spoke for maybe about three or four minutes about the shock of it all." Bumpus' wife told Harris that her husband was dead when the plane made an emergency landing. Steely Dan, on its Web site, expressed its "profound sorrow and sympathy to Cornelius' wife and family." [FREE MP3] Pay Internet Song Swappers, Industry Trade Group Urges
02.05.04
(Reuters)
Internet users could collect paychecks rather than lawsuits when they share music through "peer-to-peer" networks like Kazaa, under a proposal outlined by an industry trade group today. Rather than losing millions of dollars in potential sales to online song swappers, the recording industry should give them a cut of the revenues when they distribute songs in a protected format, The Distributed Computing Industry Association said. The scenario follows two others put forth by the trade group in an effort to forge peace between peer-to-peer networks and the major record labels that have hounded them and their users in court. DCIA chief executive Marty Lafferty said record labels could see sales grow by 10 percent over the next four years if they embraced the new technology, much as movie studios increased their market when they embraced the videocassette recorder in the 1980s. "Each time there's a technology breakthrough in entertainment distribution, once it's harnessed and embraced and an industry finds a way to capitalize..."

TOWER RECORDS Is Likely To File For Bankruptcy Soon
02.05.04
(AP)
TOWER RECORDS, the pioneering record retailer that invented the music megastore, is likely to file for bankruptcy to aid a potential sale, a source close to the matter said today. A filing could involve swapping debt for equity in a move to reduce Tower's debt burden and clear the way for a potential buyer, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The bankruptcy was likely to come within a week, the source said. MTS Inc., the privately-held parent of the West Sacramento, Calif.-based record retailer, declined to comment on the possible Chapter 11 filing. Such a filing would be nearly a year after MTS decided to sell Tower because it could not pay $5.2 million in debt on $110 million in bonds sold in 1998. TOWER RECORDS, begun with a single store in 1960, the same year as the "Twist" dance craze, became internationally recognized for its in-store concerts and a deep selection of popular and obscure music.
