JOHNNY ROTTEN Walks Off Set Of Reality TV Show
JOHNNY ROTTEN
02.06.04 (AP) Former SEX PISTOLS singer JOHNNY ROTTEN - who let fly with a string of expletives on a live celebrity reality TV show - walked off the set yesterday. Early morning viewers of "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" saw Rotten (now known as John Lydon) hug his fellow contestants before walking off the set in the Australian rain forest. Television station ITV said they lowered a drawbridge that separates the "Big Brother"-style camp from the outside world to allow Lydon to leave. His departure came just hours after ITV producers gave the 47-year-old a dressing down for swearing on a live segment of the popular program that is being followed by about 10 million Britons each night. ITV bosses imposed a time delay Wednesday after the outburst of bad language from Lydon when he was told that the public had voted to keep him in the show. "He has been fantastic entertainment on the show and viewers and his fellow..." [full story]

As OLD MAN'S CHILD are one of the veterans of the Norwegian Melodic Black Metal scene, with five influential albums plus an MCD under their belts now, the band, around mastermind Galder (guitar/vocals) surely deserves this honor. Along with fellow evildoers DIMMU BORGIR and ENSLAVED, OLD MAN'S CHILD are now eagerly awaiting the official ceremony, which takes place on February 28th in the Chateau Neuf in Oslo, Norway. THE CHARLATANS Done Recording Upcoming Album
THE CHARLATANS
02.06.04 (RockAndMetal.com) THE CHARLATANS have completed the recording of their eighth studio album, which took place in their own Big Mushroom Studios in Cheshire, UK, with mixing and mastering now underway. In a message on the band's official website, the band revealed more about the new songs. They said: "'Dead Love' is simply inspired. A most beautiful song. We brought in a cello and viola player in from the Liverpool Philharmonic to play parts as instructed by Mr (Mark - guitar) Collins himself. 'Up At The Lake' is mindblowing... possibly the most in your face tune delivered by this band in many a day. You know that sometimes just about everything falls into place and everything that can be right is right about a track... well 'Up At The Lake' is about as right as it gets. The BIG news is the shared lead vocal tracking on 'Loving You Is Easy' featuring Tony (Rogers - organ) alongside Tim... really, really special."

RAUNCHY Vocalist Passing The Torch After 10 Years
RAUNCHY
02.06.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Vocalist Lars Vognstrup has decided to leave RAUNCHY after 10 years with the band. Here is an official statement from Vognstrup on his departure: "Hey guys and ladies of course. With very much sadness I have to inform you that, after ten years, I've decided to sign out of my beloved band RAUNCHY and pass on the legacy to Kasper Thomsen. RAUNCHY is and will continue to be insanely tight, banging, clever stuff and way above what ever you decide to compare it to. It's been fun reading about some of the bands we've been compared to through the years. Some of them I've never heard, and some of them are true. But if you know anything about good music, genre aside, you'll know immediately by listening to it that our songs come straight from the heart and that's what's keeping it real and what'll make the difference, you know, take it to the top!" - Thanks a lot, Lars

THE CURE's 'Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities' Box Out
THE CURE
02.06.04 (RockAndMetal.com) As THE CURE nears its third decade at the forefront of pop culture, Universal, Rhino and Fiction/Elektra are celebrating the band's remarkable career with the release of "The Cure: Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years)," a four-disc box set of hard-to-find gems, never-before-seen photos, track-by track-breakdowns and extensive liner notes. "The first thing I ever did when I got a new single," remembers Cure vocalist Robert Smith, "was flip it over and play the other side. I always hoped the B-side would give me another version of the artist - something as good as the A-side, but somehow different. I expected great B-sides from the artists I loved..." Come 1978, when THE CURE released their debut single, 'Killing An Arab,' Smith expected no less from himself than he had from his heroes. It's evident from the very first cut in this box set, '10:15 Saturday Night,' that he intended THE CURE's... [full story]

SOCIETY 1 Bassist Will Leave Band After March Show
SOCIETY 1
02.06.04 (RockAndMetal.com) SOCIETY 1 bassist Aleister has announced that the band's much-hyped "Suspension Show" at LA's Key Club on March 11th will be his final show with the band. SOCIETY 1 leader Matt "The Lord" Zane had this to say: "Let me just say that the band will continue. It's unfortunate because I had high hopes for Aleister, but after 8 months of touring he realized he wasn't cut out for this lifestyle. This isn't for everybody. It's not easy, especially in this band. I can't blame anybody for wanting to pursue other interests that are not so far outside mundane society. I think of our situation as being in constant opposition to so many things. The pressures can tear you down to the point of forcing you back into the masses. They need to eradicate the loose anomalies, because they destroy the reality that everyone collectively believes in. I will always remain separate. We will send Aleister back into the world of the acceptable behaviors after March 11th with the best of wishes for his new life."

PAUL SIMON Early Album Finally Seeing A U.S. Release
PAUL SIMON
02.06.04 (Reuters) An album PAUL SIMON recorded in 1965 that has never seen the light of day in America will get its first official release here this spring. "The Paul Simon Songbook," previously only available as an import and long out-of-print even in that form, is due March 23rd via Columbia/Legacy. The original 12-track album was recorded in the wake of the lukewarm response afforded Simon & Garfunkel's 1964 debut, "Wednesday Morning 3 A.M." Simon moved to London, building an audience while honing his material at coffeehouse performances. Entering the studio in June 1965 with producers Stanley West and Reginald Warburton, he offered solo acoustic takes on such future staples as 'I Am A Rock,' 'April Come She Will' and 'The Sounds Of Silence.' The resulting "Songbook" was issued by CBS Records in England, but was never released in North America, reportedly due to Simon's dissatisfaction with the... [full story]

LINEA 77 'Third Moon' Director Took 'Realistic' Approach
LINEA 77
02.06.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Kal Karman, video director for LINEA 77's 'Third Moon' and 'Fantasma,' recently had this to say about his ideas behind the making of the 'Third Moon' video: "My approach for 'Third Moon' was to be as real and natural as possible. Usually music videos begin with writing a concept on paper, then finding actors or models, hiring make-up artists and stylists etc. For this project, I was curious to 'do nothing.' I was inspired by "Elephant" by Gus Van Sant. I find that film to essentially be a series of beautiful, simple portraits of youth culture. So I chose four kids that were at LINEA 77's concert in Torino. I then spent a day with each one of them, following their lives and filming what happened. I shot the video with the same 'realistic' approach: we see them exactly as they are during a concert. We used the same technicians for the lighting, and got real fans for the scene. The video resulltingly has the theme of 'being young.'"

NARAS Launching Ad Campaign Against Music Downloads
02.06.04 (Reuters) In the continuing war against digital pirates, The National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences will introduce an educational campaign against illegal downloading during the 48th annual Grammy Awards, scheduled to air this Sunday, February 8th. The campaign, "What's Your Download," is designed to teach consumers to make informed ethical and legal decisions about downloading. NARAS president Neil Portnow has told Billboard the new initiative will bow during the CBS telecast. Additionally, a public service announcement will air during the ceremony. The PSA will guide viewers to whatsthedownload.com, which provides overviews of download issues and comments from individuals involved in the music-making process. Portnow says NARAS spent more than a year developing the campaign. NARAS and the research division of the Edelman marketing firm gathered proprietary information to determine its direction. "I felt that if we were going to speak on this important issue, we should not be shooting from the hip..." [full story]

02.06.04 (Reuters) In a collaborative effort, all five major record labels have initiated test marketing of a dual-sided CD/DVD hybrid disc known as DualDisc. Sony, which developed and supports the Super Audio CD format, has released DualDiscs by AC/DC, Audioslave, David Bowie and Good Charlotte. Another hybrid CD/DVD, DVD Plus, has already hit the market from DVD Plus International. Rounder Records has released a DVD Plus by Kathleen Edwards; RCA has issued one by The Calling. GOREROTTED's 'Only Tools And Corpses' Now Available
GOREROTTED
02.05.04 (RockAndMetal.com) "Only Tools And Corpses," the long-awaited second album from UK Gore Heroes GOREROTTED, has been released by Metal Blade Records. The direction of the band is now in full force, with Mr. Gore's "Cockney Oi" vocals playing off perfectly against Goreskin's "deep, grindcore slabs of throat" and Wilson's high-pitched backing vocals that give GOREROTTED their own unique sound. This is a form of splatter/grind/death Metal with a crusty, punk edge that could only come out of the downtrodden slums of London. Just like "Mutilated In Minutes" (from which several tracks appeared on the soundtrack of the indie horror movie "The Incredibly Strange People Show"), you won't find any "album filler" lurking here. "Only Tools and Corpses" is a 9-song assault on the senses, and was recorded and mixed at the UK's renowned Philia Studios, engineered and produced by Dave Chang, and mastered at Turan Audio.

"I was expecting to hear from him today, then his wife called," Harris said. "She told me that they landed in Kansas City. We spoke for maybe about three or four minutes about the shock of it all." Bumpus' wife told Harris that her husband was dead when the plane made an emergency landing. Steely Dan, on its Web site, expressed its "profound sorrow and sympathy to Cornelius' wife and family." Pay Internet Song Swappers, Industry Trade Group Urges
02.05.04 (Reuters) Internet users could collect paychecks rather than lawsuits when they share music through "peer-to-peer" networks like Kazaa, under a proposal outlined by an industry trade group today. Rather than losing millions of dollars in potential sales to online song swappers, the recording industry should give them a cut of the revenues when they distribute songs in a protected format, The Distributed Computing Industry Association said. The scenario follows two others put forth by the trade group in an effort to forge peace between peer-to-peer networks and the major record labels that have hounded them and their users in court. DCIA chief executive Marty Lafferty said record labels could see sales grow by 10 percent over the next four years if they embraced the new technology, much as movie studios increased their market when they embraced the videocassette recorder in the 1980s. "Each time there's a technology breakthrough in entertainment distribution, once it's harnessed and embraced and an industry finds a way to capitalize..." [full story]

02.05.04 (AP) TOWER RECORDS, the pioneering record retailer that invented the music megastore, is likely to file for bankruptcy to aid a potential sale, a source close to the matter said today. A filing could involve swapping debt for equity in a move to reduce Tower's debt burden and clear the way for a potential buyer, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The bankruptcy was likely to come within a week, the source said. MTS Inc., the privately-held parent of the West Sacramento, Calif.-based record retailer, declined to comment on the possible Chapter 11 filing. Such a filing would be nearly a year after MTS decided to sell Tower because it could not pay $5.2 million in debt on $110 million in bonds sold in 1998. It's the follow-up to last year's "Evolve," which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's "Top Independent Albums" chart and No. 30 on the Billboard 200. One-upping her own valiant D.I.Y. approach, the new disc marks the first time in DiFranco's career that she handled every aspect of the recording and mixing. In an effort to achieve a minimalist, intimate effect, "Educated Guess" was crafted in a shotgun shack in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans and in her home city of Buffalo, N.Y. Consisting of titles like 'Bubble' and 'Swim,' which focus on relationships, "Educated Guess" also contains a spoken-word track, 'Grand Canyon,' which lyrically finds DiFranco balancing patriotism with dissent.

PHIL SPECTOR Defense Won't Deliver Key Evidence
PHIL SPECTOR
02.04.04 (AP) The defense in music producer PHIL SPECTOR's murder case has refused to turn over a torn piece of the victim's fingernail, blackened with gunpowder residue, prosecutors said in court documents released Wednesday. Deputy District Attorney Douglas Sortino had demanded that Spector's former attorney Robert Shapiro turn over the evidence, which he said was collected by the defense after sheriff's deputies overlooked it in their investigation of the crime scene, which was searched by authorities and then by Spector's defense team, which includes famed criminalist Henry Lee. The case is now complicated by the fact that Shapiro has been replaced as counsel by attorney Leslie Abramson. Abramson declined to comment on the request, but said she would be filing a response to the district attorney's motions before the next hearing, scheduled for February 17th. L.A. District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the change of lawyers should make no difference. "It's part of the evidence and we're entitled to have it," she said.

The songs are more straight to the point, but for example there is a 12-minute long song, so this doesn't mean that we are easier, or whatever... 'Wyrd' is unlike 'Heathenreel,' but a new ELVENKING album!" Tracks:

U.S. Music Sales Rose 10.4% In January, Soundscan Says
02.04.04 (Reuters) U.S. album sales rose 10.4 percent in the first month of 2004, Nielsen Soundscan reported, welcome news to the music industry after a three-year slump marked by costly litigation, rampant piracy and consolidation. The uptrend began late last year, a development hailed by Sanford Bernstein analyst Michael Nathanson in a recent report. But he said he was hesitant to say declines were over. Other analysts note that comparisons were easy with last year when U.S. album sales fell. But many saw signs the music business -- led by big record labels at Time Warner, Bertelsmann AG, EMI Group Plc, Sony Corp and Vivendi Universal -- has started to turn the corner. Nielsen Soundscan said total album sales rose 10.4 percent from a year ago to 46 million units for the four weeks ended Feb. 1. Chicago rapper Twista debuted at No. 1 in the latest week with his new release, "Kamikaze," while Outkast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," ranked No. 2. While CD sales fell 2.1 percent in 2003, it was a smaller drop than the 8.7 percent drop in 2002, helped by a ... [full story]

CADAVER Signs New Recording Deal With Candlelight
CADAVER
02.03.04 (RockAndMetal.com) Candlelight Records has announced the addition of Norway's CADAVER (f.k.a. CADAVER INC.) to that label's growing worldwide roster. CADAVER formed in 1988. The now popular death metal band released their full-length debut, "Hallucinating Anxiety," via Earache Records in 1990, followed by "In Pains" in 1992. Growing sales and interest, however, could not hold back the rising interest in black metal, thus CADAVER would separate in 1993. Reformed (and renamed Cadaver Inc.) in 1999 by founding band member Neddo, the band completed their contract with Earache in 2001, releasing their third album, "Discipline." The band would tour with Morbid Angel, Extreme Noise Terror and visit the US for the first time in support of the album. Signing with Candlelight, CADAVER has sinc dropped the "Inc." part of their name again, and are preparing for the release of their fourth album, "Necrosis," on 04/20.

One result of this was what is known among the hardcore fans as "The Bunny Record," released only in Japan in 1996 (to a warm reception). Some time later Pat had some time to experiment, and recruited friends Lee on drums and Pat F. on bass. A short tour occured in summer '99. Then Mikey W. came in on bass and more extensive touring occurred around the USA, on and off for about six months in late '99 and spring '00 (also to warm reception). Music Media, Web Sites Tangle In Landmark Piracy Case
02.03.04 (Reuters) In a landmark case over online piracy, a federal appeals court on Tuesday heard arguments over whether Napster-like Internet services should be kept from allowing unauthorized song and movie copies to be swapped online for free. Lawyers for the entertainment industry told a three-judge panel for the U.S. 9th Circuit Court Of Appeals in Pasadena, CA, that file-sharing services Grokster and Morpheus should be ordered to apply software filters that would prevent the online trading and copying of copyrighted songs and films. Attorneys for the peer-to-peer networks countered that using filters would effectively shut them down, and it was up to lawmakers, not the federal courts, to extend copyright law to cover the Web. "They can be ordered by this court to do something to control" the use of their software, said Russell Frackman, attorney for copyright holders represented by movie and music industry groups. "Filters and blockers can be put into place that will limit the (copyright) infringement." Morpheus attorney Fred Von Lohmann... [full story]

Also on the March 2nd bill at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center is The Lou Donaldson Quartet. A March 4th show boasts Arturo Sandoval and Los Hombres Calientes. Last August, Charles canceled all 2003 remaining tour dates to undergo aggressive treatment for acute hip discomfort. It marked the first tour cancellation in the artist's 53 years of live performance. Charles also has performances scheduled for March 12-13 in Costa Mesa, CA, and an April 10th concert in Minneapolis, MN. More dates are expected.

TONY IOMMI Tops GUITAR WORLD 'Guitar Greats' List
TONY IOMMI
02.02.04 (Reuters) According to a new Guitar World magazine poll, the No. 1 metal guitarist among fans is TONY IOMMI, God-fearing axeman with pioneering band Black Sabbath. The list appears in the magazine's March issue, which hits newsstands next week. According to Guitar World editor-in-chief Brad Tolinski, the criteria for the list were purity and innovation. He said Iommi never strayed from a basic formula of B-tuned guitars played very loudly, plenty of power chords and slower rhythms. "He's essentially the guy that created most of the conventions for heavy metal," Tolinski said. Iommi's "shining moment" is the track 'Warning' from the band's self-titled 1970 debut album, according to the poll. If Black Sabbath started the heavy metal ball rolling, then Metallica kept it alive, Tolinski said, pointing to the 1984 track 'Creeping Death' as the band's stand-out. Jimmy Page's No. 6 ranking raised some eyebrows since Led Zeppelin also helped pave the way for heavy metal.

DARK TRANQUILLITY Is Re-Mastered & Re-Released
DARK TRANQUILLITY
02.02.04 (RockAndMetal.com) DARK TRANQUILLITY checked in last week with the following news update, taken from their official website: "Both 'The Gallery' (1995) and 'The Mind's I' (1997) will be re-released in special remastered deluxe editions, featuring brand new booklet layouts as well as a massive dose of hard-to-find bonus material. During the years, we've been all too aware of the lack of availability of our earlier material in the U.S., and we've heard from a lot of people about how hard and frustrating it is to have to track down expensive import versions of the older albums in order to get the D.T. collections complete. We got so much positive response from old and new fans when Century Media licensed the 'Skydancer' (1993) album for the US territory a couple of years ago, so it feels great to finally have 'The Gallery' and 'The Mind's I' enjoying proper stateside distribution as well."

INCUBUS' 'Crow Left Of The Murder' More 'Flamboyant'
INCUBUS
02.02.04 (RockAndMetal.com) INCUBUS' fourth studio album, "A Crow Left Of The Murder," was released today on Epic Records. "We wanted to be more flamboyant this time around," INCUBUS front man Brendan Boyd says. "On a few songs in particular there's some extended periods," he says. "Of course, some of them might seem a little bit self-indulgent, but every part, even the most subtle parts of the jams, are all necessary to that particular song. This record is going to raise Mike (Einziger) to a whole new level of guitar geekdom. I think there are going to be a lot more kids in the front row, not that there aren't already, at our concerts, studying Mike. There's a lot of left-field changes too." A limited edition CD/DVD version of "A Crow Left Of The Murder" is also available. That package features live performances including 'Pistola' and 'Megalomaniac' at Lollapalooza, the "While We Were Out" documentary and more.

Music Industry Urging Digital Harmony Amongst Tech Rivals
02.02.04 (Reuters) The music industry is pushing bitter technology rivals -- most notably Microsoft and Apple -- to shake hands in the interest of promoting digital downloads. Hardware makers and digital format developers, including many traditional adversaries, are engaged in private talks aimed at meeting the music industry's goal of compatibility among competing digital music devices by 2005. "There's a substantial discussion going on among these companies about interoperability," says Paul Vidich, executive VP of strategic planning and business development for Warner Music Group. Consumers are embracing commercial digital music in increasing numbers, and the trend is likely to be aided by a Pepsi-Apple cross-promotion that launched yesterday during Super Bowl XXXVIII. But incompatibility among certain digital music services and portable players remains an obstacle. "Consumers are going to demand that there be interoperability in devices and software players," Vidich says. Executives with knowledge of the talks say much of the... [full story]
