Late April will see the release of a new album from Metal veterans SODOM. The trio consisting of Tom Angelripper (vocals, bass), guitarist Bernemann and drummer Bobby Schottkowski recorded a dozen new tracks for the self-titled release. From the rigorous opener 'Bibles And Guns' to 'Wanted Dead', the toughest and fastest number on the album, Sodom display all the strengths that have marked the band for over twenty years - including a critical lyrical analysis of western forms of society and the errors of numerous political rulers. "I've always written about things that go on in the world, the injustice and mistakes that happen everywhere. I know that you can't change anything politically, but I would at least like to make clear where I stand and raise people's awareness of those deplorable states of affair," Angelripper explains. Probably the most typical Sodom song, 'Lords Of Depravity,' and 'Nothing To Regret' -- which already enjoyed a trial run during the band's most recent U.S. tour -- also document the musicians' determination. "We wanted to prove to the world what we can do, that's why we decided to roll up our sleeves and pool our strengths." Simultaneously, they show themselves from their experimental side on 'Buried To The Justice Ground,' combining a verse reminiscent of Motorhead with a chorus that is redounded to Venom's honor. "Sodom" was recorded and mixed at the premises of an old friend: Andy Brings. The former Sodom guitarist produced the new album at his Midas Twins studios in Hagen, Germany, together with sound engineer Haan Hartmann, bringing out the best in the musicians. "Andy did a great job and really lured the optimum performance out of me. Our new album proves that you don't necessarily have to go to an American studio to get a good sound." "Sodom" was mastered by Eroc, drummer with German cult Rock band, Grobschnitt. Coincidentally, the Angelripper/Bernemann/Schottkowski line-up are celebrating an anniversary these days: the current Sodom team has proved the most consistent in the whole band history. "We've been together for ten years," explains Tom Angelripper, who will tour Eastern Europe with Sodom as early as April, promising an extensive tour of Germany and Europe in the Fall of 2006: "It's high time we celebrated a real thrash metal party again with our fans." Sodom's origins date back to 1980. Be it their early demo tapes, the "In The Sign Of Evil-EP" (Steamhammer) or their 1996 debut album "Obsessed By Cruelty," Sodom have intimidated the world at large from the very beginning. Two years and one album later, the band toured Europe with the likes of Whiplash, recording the live cut 'Mortal Way Of Life' at the legendary Tor 3 in Dusseldorf, Germany in the process. With 1989's "Agent Orange," the band from Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr area unleashed a milestone of the genre. Sodom toured all over the world, traveled Europe repeatedly, and played a number of successful gigs in Japan and South America. Albums like "Better Off Dead" (1990) or "Tapping The Vein" (1992) manifested the success of the band, who -- despite a number of personnel changes -- managed to maintain their characteristic sound, mainly thanks to Tom Angelripper. Throughout the Nineties, Sodom lost none of their authenticity on albums like "Masquerade In Blood" or "'Til Death Do Us Unite," remaining firmly grounded and never losing touch with their roots. With their 1999 release, "Code Red" -- a title that refers to the U.S. Marines' infamous punishment code -- the trio proved as politically committed as ever. This tradition was continued in 2001 with a journey to the Far East, namely two shows in Bangkok and Saigon and the explosive subject matter of their album, "M 16." Subsequently, Angelripper threw himself into the preparations for Sodom's first DVD, "Lords Of Depravity Part I" (the band are already busy working on a successor), presenting a long-awaited new studio recording with the likes of "Sodom."

Montreal Extreme Technical Metallers CRYPTOPSY's 'The Pestilence That Walketh In Darkness (Psalm 91:5-8)' video will premier this weekend on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. Filmed in a swamp, the video features acolytes receiving the infamous worm-communion from Lord Worm's chalice. North American and Australian fans will be able to witness the band's decimating live show later next month. Skinsman Flo Mounier commented: "How perfect is this, Cryptopsy tears it up on the East Coast with Immolation and long-time faves Exodus, then goes to Australia for the first time ever to unleash Canadian brutality; hoping it won't effect their ecosystem too gravely. Finally one week on the west coast, where we'll have a few days to get to know you better... be prepared." Touring in support of their new album, "Once Was Not," the band has also been scheduled for European Summer festival appearances at Germany's Party San Open Air and England's Ghostfest. Reinventing and redefining metal's boundaries, CRYPTOPSY, recognized worldwide for infusing extreme music with awe-inspiring precision, rabidly dynamic rhythms, and mouth-foaming viciousness, have earned music fans respect inside and outside the Metal community. The band's viperous recordings and punishing live performance have confirmed their place in music's elite. Founded in 1992, CRYPTOPSY were launched into the international metal scene following their Ungentle Exhumation demo release and debut CD, "Blasphemy Made Flesh." Quickly signed to Sweden's Wrong Again Records (who also discovered In Flames and Arch Enemy), the band issued the underground classic "None So Vile" (1996), which severely outclassed peers and resulted in the band being cited as having reinvigorated the style. Their intense energy and musical superiority led to a Century Media international record deal and also the American re-release of their previous two CDs. Hand-picked by departing vocalist Lord Worm, Mike DiSalvo (ex-Infestation) recorded with CRYPTOPSY on their following albums, "Whisper Supremacy" and "And Then You'll Beg." Injecting renewed excitement into their committed fan base, Lord Worm rejoined the band with their Spring 2005 North American tour, a move long-time devotees urged him to do for some time. Recorded at Studio Vortex in St-Constant, Canada by producer Sebastien Marsan, "Once Was Not" represents the band's awesome power and versatility. Lighting the album's fuse is an acoustic/electric guitar intro entitled 'Luminum.' Descending with whirlwind intensity, 'In The Kingdom...' embodies the entire CRYPTOPSY experience: acid-jazz infused extreme technical metal, battle-honed guitar riffs, strategically supportive and deadly effective bass guitar, culminating in the omnipresent rhythmical onslaught from drummer Flo Mounier. "Once Was Not" demonstrates the licentious cohesion years of touring and performing has given CRYPTOPSY. Tour Dates:

BIOMECHANICAL have checked in with the following European tour report: "Well, we are back and fuck me that was a surprise. The first Biomechanical date in Italy was SOLD OUT!!! What can we say other than a huge thanks to all who came at the gig and so sorry for the people who had to be turned away. Hopefully will make it over there again sooner rather than later. The hospitality was second to none and the guys from the club in Bari made us feel right at home. On the night we were faced with the impossible task of choosing between five types of pizza and were given plenty supplies of wine and beer... We wanna play there every week!!!! The gig it self was incredible for us as it was our first sold out gig and also the moshing was plentiful!! Warchild were awesome and we left the place with the best mood for the rest of the tour. In Rome we were lucky enough to have time to visit some of the awesome sites including the breathtaking Monument Of The Unknown soldier. Crushing display of power from the original Empire!!! The gig itself was great. Sold out all our merch which was cool but the gig in Turin was a real treat!! Having fans traveling from all over to see your band is something else. And that is what happened that night. It was a bit of an eventful night to say the least. First of all we got the BIGGEST china crash ever made on this planet!!!It was bigger that the drum kit! Thanks to Sick head for this awesome contribution. We have never seen Matt so impressed and scared in our lives (both at the same time). We played our normal set but on DNA Metastasis the kick decided to leave the building and Matt C stopped the gig (justifiably) and as there was nothing else to do, we decided to throw in a metal screaming competition. The dude with the highest vocal would win a brand new Nat Jones-made Biomechanical shirt. There were a lot of people trying to hit the high stuff (including girls) but there was one guy who killed the competitors with his super high screams. Funny enough he was a dude with a Death shirt :) It was awesome fun. We resumed with DNA Metastasis and after that we finished with The Imperial March and Raining Blood but the guys wanted to hear some more so we ended up playing Do You Know Me and closed with Creeping Death. It was an awesome night for us and the same goes for the last night in Naples. It was our first tour in Italy and all the guys made it really special for us, Thanks a million!! Can't wait to play over there again!! The UK gigs were nothing sort of amazing for us. Gotta thank all the people who put up with us :) Co-Exist for their bone-crushing performances and all the bands who played @ the gigs, Dave and Lyn for the merch skills and all the fans who came, in particular Manchester and London created some mega metal mayhem but it was awesome all around!! The gig @ Leeds was eventful and full of technical problems but shit happens and there isn't anything you can do in situations like these. We felt bad that people who came to see Biomechanical couldn't enjoy that gig. We hope to come around in the future and play again minus all the crappy problems! That night we stayed at the organizers of the Damnation Festival who it so happens they are huge Sci-Fi and metal fans!! My kind of people!!! I nearly made it nicking a huge Hellboy figure but the boots and cape sticking out of my coat gave it all away :D Last date was in London and it was absolutely amazing, from the attendance to the bands to the sound, (Thanks to Kate for the help on the front desk-U rule) Thanks to all who came to this tour and will see you again on the road soon!!!"

Christofer Johnsson, founder, songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist for the symphonic Swedish group THERION has announced today via the band's official website that he will be retiring from vocal duties. The following is an excerpt from his post: "As was announced at the Metal Mania festivals, I am going to retire from vocals. The reasons for this are two: One is that I feel it's not fun to sing anymore (even though I have enjoyed playing the old songs on guitar). [My] voice is getting weaker over the years and I experienced problems at the end of the U.S./Canada tour. The problem isn't only getting older, but rather that we basically never rehearse as a band and therefore, I don't keep my throat 'warm.' It simply doesn't work to not sing for half a year and then go on tour for two months and shout every evening. It used to work when I was younger, but now I feel it's not comfortable anymore and when it doesn't feel right, it's definitely time to stop. The second reason is that we would like to stop playing old songs, anyway. By old I mean 'Lepaca Klifffoth' and older. We are now working on our 13th studio album and it is getting harder and harder to choose which songs to play live. The number of 'classics' - songs that we more or less must play - is growing all the time and we don't want to end up like one of those bands where you know beforehand 95% for sure what songs that are going to be played. We want to be able to have space to play a couple of unexpected songs each new tour. We, of course, realize that many fans will miss those old brutal songs, but we are convinced that those fans also will prefer to hear something new each time from the Theli album and onwards. The ProgPower festival in England will be the final show where I do vocals on stage. This will be our 106th and final show supporting Lemuria/Sirius B. We will not be on stage again until 2007. I have planned a special surprise for this festival (not even the other band members know it), so don't miss this festival if you live in the U.K.!" THERION will be releasing "Celebrators Of Becoming," a 4-DVD/2-CD set featuring over ten hours of video footage and two hours of live audio. There are lesser bands within the metal scene that have managed to create a real unique and special sound within the last decade. A lot of bands copied each other, while some acts created a new sound and started a new area of metal. Therion is such a band. They created their own music, realized their own special sound and fascinated masses of fans (even those outside the metal scene) with their excellent combination of symphonic elements, operatic vocals and medieval choirs, mixed with classical metal and gothic elements. The band has been at it for more than eighteen years now. Christopher Johnsson founded Therion in 1987 (the first year was done under the name Blitzkrieg), their musical direction was pretty much Death Metal, as represented on their first releases such as "Time Shall Tell" or "Of Darkness." Soon the name of the band got popular within the fast-growing Death Metal scene. Therion always developed their style further, and with their excellent "Lepaca Kliffoth" album, the metal scene took notice them and praised them as one of the most promising bands. The track 'Beauty In Black' soon helped established the band worldwide. With their grandiose follow up album, "Theli," Therion finally broke through and became one of the leading bands within the Gothic Metal genre, always creating new sounds and ideas.

Legendary Swiss Metal band CELTIC FROST have announced seven weeks of North American tour dates supporting their forthcoming May 30th release, "Monotheist." Commencing Sept. 11th and running through November, the extensive tour will reintroduce the band's mesmerizing live performance to their ravenous fanbase. Also scheduled are European festival performances throughout the summer. Their first studio album in 13 years, and four years in the making, "Monotheist" is an extremely dark, inventive, and radically heavy release. When asked what fans can expect from the tour and the new album, vocalist/guitarist Tom Gabriel Fischer said, "Celtic Frost are very proud to announce their most extensive tour ever of the North American continent. In anticipation of Century Media's May 30th, 2006, release of our darkest and heaviest manifest to date, the Monotheist album, we are preparing a collection of truly morbid old and new Celtic Frost music. Join us at these special services of worship and be part of the reappearance of one the world's most fervent and passionate visions. We will be honored to welcome you." Co-produced by Peter Tagtgren (Hypocrisy, Dimmu Borgir) and with guest vocal appearances from Lisa Middlehauve (Xandria), Satyr (Satyricon), and Ravn (1349), "Monotheist" is a testament to why many metal bands performing today owe allegiance to Celtic Frost. Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison says: "I have been a die-hard Frost fan since Morbid Tales. If you had written them off, think again. This is the next essential Celtic Frost purchase since To Mega Therion. Horns up!!!" Tour Dates:

The following are excerpts from an interview done recently by www.beatmag.net with vocalist Brian Livoti from Modern Thrash Metallers WATCHMAKER. Q: "Is there a Watchmaker philosophy?" A: "Simply thrash as hard as you possibly can and even if you are totally going down in flames, do so with complete conviction. Never let anyone let you see how much you are fucking up - be it on stage, in the studio, or in non-metallic situations. Fucking kill or be killed, even if you are always in the wrong." Q: "How did Watchmaker come together?" A: "With the exception of our new guitarist, Mark, we've all known each other since high school. We were all in some dopey thrash band together, and after we went our separate ways for a while -- to college, etc. -- we realized we were happiest being in that same dopey thrash band. But now, all of us had some kind of axe to grind or chip on our shoulders, so the music was not nearly as light-hearted. We were now just in this to purge inner demons. So I guess Watchmaker is a direct result of student loan angst. Never underestimate the creative power of piss poor credit!" Q: "Why are you so very angry?" A: "Piss poor credit! Well that is just part of it. The stress levels in my daily life keep the anger levels very high. I'm an old family man with a pretty heavy career, and all of the bullshit that accompanies it. Our music is a direct result of whatever we are going through at the time, so I can tell you exactly what was going on with each album. The first album, I was fresh out of college, deeply in debt, with no job prospects. Add that to a huge sense of self-loathing, and you've got 'Kill.Crush.Destroy.,' our first album. We started the recording of the second album, 'Kill.Fucking.Everyone.' on the day my daughter was born. I was feeling all kinds of strange anxieties over bringing another human being into this terrible world, and I was just starting to climb the corporate ladder at my day job. Stress levels were always off the charts for me, and that was laid upon a turbulent sea of unease. During 'Erased From The Memory Of Man,' I was starting to enjoy the fruits of my labor in the workplace, but my marriage was taking a dive because of it. Every song except one, 'Nuked To Ashes,' is about my failing relationship with my wife. Look at the song titles and read what lyrics you can, and it is all there. I'm no poser - I only write about things that actually upset and move me. Q: Are you all into sex and drugs or are you straight edge? Tell us about how either affects you." A: "I used to be into sex with my wife, but now I am just into sex with myself. But drugs are out, as being an older responsible family man AND a druggie do not really work well together. Same goes for Paul, who has two kids. And the same goes for Mike, who is a fireman, and cannot really be hopped up on goofballs to go save some lives. So we are pretty straight, but not for political reasons or anything. It just doesn't gel well with the rest of our lives. The only two people in our band who are keeping it real are Nick, who likes to smoke, and Mark, who does more drugs on a weekend than the rest of us have seen in our entire lives. That guy is nuts. I am sure it will catch up to him someday, but it sure as shit has not affected his performance abilities, and we love him, so party the fuck on Mark." Q: "What are your plans for the future? A: "More of the same. More thrash." Q: "Would you like mainstream success?" A: "If it meant that I would never have to work in an office again AND be able to provide for my family, then fuck yeah. You show me the dollar amount on the dotted line, and I'll wear a friggin' dress on stage and play bongos. Whatever the kids like nowadays. But no one will ever guarantee you success for your attempted sell-out, so why bother? I play dirty thrash metal, and I am going to go out in a total blaze of glory."

HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak has posted the following message on the group's official web site: "The Winter Olympics 2006 are over, and it ended on a high note for us: Sweden beat Finland 3-2 in the ice-hockey final, in a very exciting and nerve-racking game. Actually, the Finns were the most impressive team in this tournament, winning every match decisively until the final round and easily beating the second best playing team this year, Russia, in the semi-finals. But the Swedes played a beautiful game on the ice, cutting the Finns short on almost every occasion. I know our neighbors in the east (or west, for that matterÉ) won't agree with me, but it was a most fitting end to the XXth games, with Sweden winning their seventh (!) gold medal. Congratulations to everyone who made this the by far most succcessful Winter Olympics for our nation. And thanks for the great memories! I have only one question: what am I supposed to fill my days with now? :-) Well, maybe writing a little music would be a good start. Actually, we have more or less completed half the songs for the album, scheduled to be released at the end of October of this year. I have a very good feeling about this, the music so far is very varied and, I think, of high quality. My gut tells me we will be building on the foundation of 'Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken' and expanding the horizons of what is Hammerfall even further. You all will find out eventually. I will post more news on this as we go, with some song titles and such in the coming months. The new issue of Sweden Rock magazine features an extensive eight-page tour diary I wrote on the Stratovarius/Hammerfall tour last fall, and Anders [Johansson, drums] have written something as well which will be published in various Metal Hammers around Europe. Look them up if you want an insight in life on the road, I think you'll find the reading both amusing and interesting." When you talk about today's Heavy Metal scene, you have to talk about Sweden's HAMMERFALL. Founded by Dronjak in 1993, he enlisted friend Jesper Stromblad and later Joacim Cans to create the songs for and record the classic "Glory To The Brave" album. Since Stromblad and two more members decided to concentrate on their other bands, Cans and Dronjak were left to replace the entire lineup even before the album was released. Regardless, "Glory To The Brave" became the album the Metal scene needed and was waiting for: straight, hard-hitting songs that instantly became hymns, getting everybody to talk about the band. Although it was a quiet period for Metal at the time, HAMMERFALL entered the German charts at position #38 and made everybody feel the power of Heavy Metal music once more. "A metal heart is hard to tear apart," the band sang, and it rang true. HAMMERFALL soon became one of the the most successful newcomers ever on the European Metal scene, and made two more excellent albums in "Legacy Of Kings" and "Renegade," which were followed by 2002's "Crimson Thunder" and the band's current "Blood Bound" album (released this past October), on which producer Charlie Bauerfeind did a fantastic job to help create HAMMERFALL's heaviest album to date.

VENOM, arguably one of the heaviest bands on the planet and one of the true forefathers of the Black Metal genre, have now returned once more. It all started back in 1979 in the north of England, a young Heavy Metal/Punk Rocker named Conrad Lant started working in a recording studio as an assistant engineer after leaving school. One day, while visiting a friend's house, he met guitarist Jeff Dunn, with whom he talked about music and the bands they were in - quickly discovering that they both shared the idea of creating a band that was heavier and more over-the-top than anything anyone had ever seen before, more Satanic than BLACK SABBATH, louder than MOTORHEAD, with a pyrotechnic show to rival KISS, and with even more leather and studs than JUDAS PRIEST. VENOM weren't a band prepared to compromise. They held firm to their principles, even if at times, this might have cost them significant rewards. For instance, they always boasted that their stage show was so massive they'd never play a UK date until they could be satisfied on being booked into a venue that could house every last pyro and effect. That's why they made their official debut at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon in London on June 1st, 1984, an eternal three years after debuting with their landmark album "Welcome To Hell" in 1981. Just one year later in 1982 (and still not having made a single live appearance yet) the notable Newcastle ne'er-do-wells detonated the whole Black Metal explosion with practically a single stroke by releasing an album with that exact title. Their story is one of the most surprising in the history of UK metal, seemingly rising from impossible conditions to become one of the cornerstones of the Modern Metal sound. So now -- just when everyone thought Metal music couldn't get any heavier -- VENOM make their official recorded return with "Metal Black," slated for release on April 4th via Sanctuary Records. A band that has influenced music makers the world over with their visceral albums containing songs like 'Warhead,' VENOM can easily brag of some of the most familiar and celebrated musical accomplishments in Metal history and are, in essence, a legendary band who deliver the ultimate in Extreme music. "Metal Black" sees original founding band member Cronos, together with long-standing members Antton and Mykvs, creating a new masterpiece of metal. This is such an exciting album for the band -- and for all fans of VENOM -- with 14 brand new roaring and vital tracks, again taking the goat by the horns and reinventing their own original style, as controversial as ever. VENOM bring their brand of Metal head first into the 21st century in the form of "Metal Black," an album that harkens back to their earlier style. With high production quality and the delivery of a charging beast, "Metal Black" is simply Metal at its heaviest and of the darkest kind. "'Metal Black' with a sound and intensity of 1980's Venom, this was an obvious title," says Cronos. "We put the new line-up together and rehearsed a whole load of the early songs for about 3 months before starting to write the album, so the songs have emerged in that style, the style of Black Metal. The original name for the album was to be 'Maleficarvm' which is the name of one of the tracks, but people said they couldn't pronounce it (?), so we went for the next option, the controversial one. The name is already starting fights, people are going fucking nuts fighting over this, although it makes perfect sense to me. Venom play Black Metal which means our Metal is Black. Seems fucking obvious to me really, it's the 'same difference.' So there's another thing to scratch your heads over!" VENOM are currently still in the process of planning their live appearances for 2006, starting with the following three dates in the UK later this month:
03/23 Glasgow, UK [Garage]
03/25 London, UK [Mean Fiddler]
03/26 Manchester, UK [Academy 2]
